dan howell raised his eyebrows at her.
"no. no way."
she whined, her arms falling to her side in a pouty gesture. "why not?"
dan rolled his eyes. "i won't look good in it, katie."
phil had left an hour before, and now katie was trying to convince him to change his entire wardrobe.
"yes, you will!" she tucked a strand of pink hair behind her ear. "you'll look sexy, come on."
"sexy? really?" he scoffed. she sighed.
"yes, sexy. you'll look like a fuckin' prostitute, is that what you want to hear?"
dan stared at her. "no."
she sighed again, sitting down next to him on the bed. "don't get me wrong, dan, i love your hot i-just-got-out-of-bed-after-a-week-of-being-sick look. i just think it's fun to try something new."
dan smacked her arm, and she giggled. "you know i'm right. and that's a look, but we're looking for another look. to impress phil."
"no," dan hissed, but his cheeks went a bit pink at the implication that a change in clothes might impress phil. damn it.
katie grabbed his hand. "it'll be fun, i promise. and if you don't like it you never have to wear it again."
dan was quiet, lost in thought. she spoke again.
"look, you can try on some of my clothes. if they fit, and you like it even a little bit, you can go say hi to phil and see how he reacts. okay?"
dan hesitated. honestly, showing up at phil's door randomly in an outfit from his female friend sounded absolutely terrifying.
"it'll be fun," she repeated. dan sighed.
"fine."
katie chose him out an outfit of hers, shoving it into his arms and pushing him into the bathroom. he looked through it, shaking a bit.
the first thing he saw was a large (even bigger than usual) black sweatshirt, which he was grateful for. it had a sprinkling of pink stars surrounding the collar, which stood out, the fabric of the small designs fuzzy to the touch.
what he wasn't as grateful about was the fishnets, and the tiny black shorts.
they fit fine, but under the sweatshirt they didn't show, and it looked as if all dan was wearing on his bottom half were fishnets. the outfit felt far more showy than anything he had worn in years, possibly ever.
the outfit was finished with a velvet ribbon (for his neck) and black combat boots that fit him surprisingly well.
dan looked at himself in the mirror, his cheeks rosy. he hated to admit it, but he looked... good. the split lip and bruised cheek kind of gave him a tough look even if he looked like a grunge prostitute who had ended up with a particularly rough client.
everything fit pretty well, if not a little big. he sighed.
"did you get it on?" katie called, and dan bit his lip.
"yeah," he called back.
"then show me!"
dan took a deep breath before opening the door.
katie looked him over, her eyes going wide. "damn, you look hot. if i liked boys i think i'd try to screw you."
"you like girls, then?"
"anyways, are you gonna show phil?"
dan chewed on his lip for a moment. "i d-don't know..."
"i think you should." she smiled encouraging. "he'll faint."
dan giggled. if he was being honest he felt kind of... confident. he hadn't felt that in so long, and he knew for a fact the last time he had had been while dancing. not because of an outfit.
"okay," he said quietly. katie beamed, looking him over a second time to check for any flaws.
"you know, those fishnets would look much better if you had a bit more thigh," she mumbled. dan raised an eyebrow.
"watch it."

dan's cheeks were red by the time they got even remotely near phil's room. he hugged himself from habit.
"are you sure this is a good idea?"
katie waved him off. "of course it is." they stopped in front of his door. "go on, knock. i'm gonna hide around that corner." she pointed.
dan bit his lip, anxious beyond belief, but he nodded. he had to do this, he had to prove this point, to himself and everyone else.
he watched her go, fidgeting nervously. he took a deep breath, and knocked.
he heard some muffled noises but he couldn't focus on who was speaking or what they were saying. the door swung open.
"dan? are you-" phil cut himself off, his breath catching, his eyes going wide. dan blushed, avoiding his eyes.
"um, hi..."
"hi."
dan looked up and saw that phil's face was red as well, which gave him a boost of confidence.
"i just wanted to thank you for earlier..." he flashed him a smile. phil's eyes widened a bit more, his pupils dilated.
"er, y-yeah um, no p-problem..."
dan giggled, biting his lip.
"dan y-you should probably go i'm talking to-"
"phil? who's-" eva came up behind him, her eyes landing on dan. phil flinched visibly, his hand flying up to hold in a laugh. "you."
dan's jaw tightened; he felt good right now, he wasn't giving it up for her. "me."
she glared at him, and he waved, his sweater hitching up a bit. he swore he heard phil curse under his breath.
"i'll leave you two to talk," he said softly, tucking some hair behind his ear. in a final burst of confidence he winked at phil, spinning around.
he could hear eva yelling already and he giggled, walking faster. he rounded the corner and grabbed katie's hand, breaking into a run.
"we fucked up, we fucked up," he hissed through laughter, his face crimson.
"what? how?"
"i think they were having the official breakup talk..."
katie laughed loudly. "oh shit, dan!"
"i know!"
they stopped when they got to her room, panting. dan was beaming, he didn't think he could stop smiling if he tried.
katie hugged him, erupting into peals of laughter. dan grinned.
his day had been considerably improved.
