So

The shadow guy (I don't want to say black—) is Death, or The Grim Reaper or Satan or whatever you want to call him: He prefers Devan, which is closest in resemblance to Devil.

That bird with the ridiculously long beak is his mortal mother (there's a long line of Deaths) which is why he is not what most would imagine Death to look like. His mother was placed under this curse after cheating on Death with another man, said man suffered the consequence of Death.

Devan loves his mother and does not wish  this upon her. After trying to defeat his father he is sent to the living world above to be constantly tortured by the questions and science of humans.
