Ch. 3 - Discovery Requires Experimentation

**Kinda random title to this chapter but I just watched more AoS, so whatever.

"So you're telling me, that my team is currently watching Clint's memories?" An exasperated Bruce watched as Nick Fury paced the medical bay. In front of him there were several hospital beds. Earth's mightiest heros (excluding the Hulk and Thor) were lying down in the world known as unconsciousness.

"That's what I just said didn't I?" Fury was clearly pissed. Bruce wasn't sure if it was for the team- especially Romanoff and Barton- or because he was busy with something else. "Trust me, I havr two of my top scientists working on it."

"Any idea how to bring them back?" Bruce had been officially taken off the case, even though he was a renowned scientist himself. Fury's orders- as they didn't want the other guy having an accident if he got frustrated.

Fury stopped pacing for a second. He really didn't want to answer that question. But then again, when did anyone ever want to answer a question that you didn't have a solution to. "We might- that's the key word, have to wait this out."

The news just kept on getting better and better. First, four avengers had been unknowingly put into a coma like state, and now it could be weeks before they were awake. This left the team in shambles; they were extremely vulnerable. Somehow, the scientists had to speed up the process.

These thoughts were all that were on Bruce's mind as he aimlessly tossed and turned in bed. A bit of moonlight peaked through the curtains, painting the room in a pale sheen of white light. He sighed before getting up and leaving his room, intending to pay his lab a visit.

Bruce flicked the luminescent overhead lights on and steered himself over to the desk. Waiting there for him was a stack of files; several papers for each unconscious Avenger. Scans, blood work, and biochemistry related brain waves. (A/N: fun fact, I have no idea what I'm talking about.) They revealed nothing except for what they already knew, which wasn't very much.

He sighed out and then took a few deep breaths. Then, the scientist crossed the room to where a large, steel case sat; it wasn't there before.  A sticky note was plastered onto it and read:

Dr. Banner, we found this at the site of the accident. We thought you'd like to take a look. Enjoy.

Along with that, the case itself had white painted text.

S.H.I.E.L.D.  |  0-8-4

Bruce frowned. Why was this sent to him and not the other two lead scientists? The note didn't have a name or signature, so he just assumed it was from the STRIKE team that had been sent to the Hydra base. He examined the thin piece of small paper, looking for more details. Not even a fingerprint, which was quite odd.

Bruce thought about his options very carefully. He could investigate this and whatever the sticky note referenced was inside, or he could report it to Fury and hand it over. Bruce knew what he had to do.

"JARVIS, can you lock all the doors?" He asked while fidgeting around, "Oh, and if anyone asks where I am, tell me first, okay?"

The AI didn't skip a beat, "Of course, Dr. Banner."

"Okay, okay, okay..." Bruce was done with not being on the case. If he wanted to help, then he would have to take action himself.

Bruce carefully unlocked the trunk and flipped open the lid. Inside he spotted a small, round disc. It was glowing a dark purple and seemed to have a pulse. He also made sure not to touch it; who knew what it could do.

Hours flew by like the sun moving through the sky, now that it had fully rose. Smoke occasionally flew up in the private laboratory that the doctor was now using, but he considered that to be a good thing. Nobody even asked where he was, and that was fine by him.

At the end of the day, Bruce finally had something to show for it. That is, if he ever showed someone that he had blatantly disobeyed direct orders from Director Fury. He would have his head for that.

Bruce confirmed one more time with JARVIS that nobody was asking for him before double and triple encrypting a secure line. He had deduced that he could see what his friends were seeing by connecting the disc to the computer. Of course, he had to protect from the prying eyes of SHIELD.

He quickly looked over his shoulder before plugging in a specifically designed adapter. It would clamp onto the disc and measure the amount of volts and energy and that strange pulse. Then, it would convert these factors into whatever was happening. It was on Tony's setting, so it should be from a third person view of his perspective.

He braced himself for what he was about to see. Would it be just static, meaning his experiment failed? Or would it show details about their archer's early life? Bruce hoped it would be the latter one, so that he could see a happy child running around; Tony would also be thrilled to get good blackmail material.

Well, Bruce wasn't wrong about the childhood part, for it was a success! That showed up pretty clearly on the monitor, even if it was just a bit blurry. No, he was wrong about the whole "happy child" thing; what he saw made him freeze completely.
