Death The Kid

I had weird dreams. That was expected - I always had weird dreams - but these were exceptionally weird.

I was alone in a chamber, fires lit all around the room. In front of me, a woman in green faced me.

I couldn't place her face, because it was blurry. But in all of my other dreams, I had never encountered a glowing woman with a blurry face before.

You carry my disease, she said gloatingly. My children shall be avenged.

"Um." I told told the weird lady. "I don't have a disease."

Foolish child. The lady hissed. The children of Hera must die.

The fires leapt, and my dream changed. I was standing on a black cloud, so I figured it was nighttime.

"My child."

I jumped up. The outline of a woman was faint, only traced by the starlight. Two stars twinkled, and I got the uneasy feeling that they were eyes.

"You were never a mistake." She said. Her voice was hesitant, almost tender. "Only the children of Hera could defeat her, and you were necessary."

I finally found my voice. "Who are you? What are you talking about?"

"Learn, my child." The woman said, fading. "The answer lies closer than you think."

A wave of exhaustion came over me, and I closed my eyes. When I opened them again, I was lying in a bed, staring up at a white ceiling.

I groaned. "Is this another dream?"

"Nope." Said Henry. "But thanks for asking."

I stared at the horns protruding from the top of his head, having to squint because of the brightness. "How do you attach those to your head?"

"They grow there." He told me. "Common in satyrs."

I blinked. "Okay, seriously though."

"Look down." He told me.

I nearly jumped out of bed.

He wore an orange Camp Half-blood shirt, and no pants, but I forgot to feel awkward. From the waist down, his legs were furry and his feet were hooves.

I started feeling dizzy. "Henry... Explain."

"Long story short, the Greek myths are real." He said. "I'm part goat. This is a camp for demigods - half human, half god. Also known as Half-blood. You are one of those people."

"Half god. Half human." I repeated. "Me."

"Yep."

"Fine, I'll go along with it." I sat up, and immediately put a hand to my head. "Ow!"

"Here, drink this." He handed me a glass. I looked at its contents suspiciously. "Don't worry, it tastes like liquid brownies."

I downed the cup and immediately felt about ten times better. "Woah. What is this?"

"Nectar." He said, looking amused. "Don't drink too much or you'll explode."

"Duly noted." I said, nearly smiling. Almost.

"We've got to go to the Big House." He told me. "Your mom might claim you there."

I thought back to my dreams. "My mom?"

"Your mom is a goddess. She might be Nemesis, goddess of revenge. That'd be a good fit." Henry didn't sound like he was joking. For once, he sounded completely serious.

I decided to go along with it. "Yeah. Help me stand up."

The moment we stepped out of the Big House, another satyr trotted up to us. His horns were a little bigger that Henry's. "Is this the new kid?"

"Scarlet Arrow." I said. "Nice costume."

Henry winced. "She doesn't believe us yet. I think I'll take her by the Hecate cabin on to way to the Big House."

"I'll go with you." The satyr said. "I'm checking on Luna."

"Isn't she the one who got here last week?"

"Yeah." The satyr said, satisfied. "They're really rolling in, aren't they?" He turned back to me. "I'm Grover Underwood. You came in two days ago, right?"

I blinked. "Two days?"

"You've been in shock." Henry explained. "Over the whole... You know. That thing that you did, whatever it was, took a lot out of you."

"No kidding." I grumbled, rubbing my ribs. "That nectar stuff helped, but my ribs felt like they were broken."

"Here we are." Grover announced, pointing to the cabin in front of us. It had a (insert symbol here) above the doorway. "Luna!"

A brown-haired girl came out and stared at me. Then her gaze fell on Henry, then on Grover. She smiled. "Hey!"

"Can you show Scarlet that we're for real?" Grover asked, his hands clasped.

As a response, Lana started muttering in a language I didn't recognize. The next thing I knew, I was being slowly lifted into the air.

I felt the air above me. Nothing. I felt my waist, where a parachute or flying pack strap would go. Nothing.

I crossed my arms. "Fine! Fine! Put me down!"

A grin formed on Luna's face as I was reunited with the ground. I declined Henry's help and grunted. "Okay, okay. I believe you, I guess. To the Big House?"

"To the Big House." Henry echoed.

"I'll stay here with Luna." Grover decided. I resisted the urge to comment, but as we walked away the first question Luna asked was "How's Juniper?" So I decided nothing was happening except a friendship.

Once we walked into the Big House, I was met with a few different pairs of eyes on me. I crossed my arms and scowled.

"Scarlet Arrow," a girl said. "Please tell us your story."

So I did. I told those people about how my dad died from a heart attack, how I got adopted, about school - not the whole Bloody Arrow thing, just how I got to school and encountered bullies - how some jerk started bullying my friends, what happened, how I blacked out, had weird dreams, and got thrown into the air.

I ended with "Who are you?"

"I'm Reyna." Said the girl who had spoken before. "These are Annabeth, Piper, Percy, and Frank." She pointed to the people as she said their names.

"Sup." Said Percy.

"And that's Nico." She pointed to the chair on the end. I looked, curious, at this mysterious figure.

Reluctantly, he came into the light. I stared at his black hair and eyes, so similar to my own. I tilted my head in greeting, expressionless. I knew better than to look longer than a glance when he made eye contact.

"Wait," I said, my brain finally making a connection. "If these supposed Greek gods are real, then that dream I had..."

"Is probably also real." Annabeth supplied. "What was your dream?"

I told them about the weird lady in green who was obsessing over revenge and disease. "Then this sparkly lady told me that only the children of Hera could stop her."

Henry blinked. "But... Hera only has god children, Hephaestus and Ares. She doesn't have any demigod children."

"I wonder which goddesses spoke to you." Piper mused. "They were obviously goddesses, obviously... But that makes no sense. You're right, Henry, Hera doesn't have demigod kids. Did she specify which god was destined to take down the weird revenge lady?"

"Probably Nemesis." Frank supplied. "It makes sense for her to be obsessed with revenge. I mean, she's the goddess of revenge."

"Very true, Frank." Annabeth admitted.

"Well, the sparkly lady seemed to refer to me as a child of Hera." I said slowly. "But that's impossible, right?"

"Right." Nico said firmly. "Hera doesn't have kids, period. If you're anyone's daughter, it's not her." He peered at me. "I'd say you were a daughter of Hades, but your parent is a goddess, from what you've said."

"That would be correct."

"And how old are you?"

"Fourteen."

"Well, your mother didn't mess up too much." Annabeth sighed. "No messages yet, so I guess you won't be claimed until the campfire."

I got a weird mental image of demigods doing a dance ritual around the campfire before throwing me in.

"Yeah." I sighed. "I guess so."

I tend to leave, but Percy cut me off. "Wait."

"What is it, Seaweed Brain?" Annabeth asked. "She's unclaimed for now, you'll have to stay in the Big House."

"No need." Percy said. "Don't you recognize her eyes? Her face? Annabeth, we've only seen that once before but you should remember it. Tartarus. Tour group. Nico already knows, don't you, Nico?"

Nico studied me. "It is too dangerous a guess, but all the signs are there. Nearly all the signs, anyway. She has no wings."

"Um, wings?" I asked, shifting my weight. "Okay, you guys are nuts. Absolutely nuts. I'm supposed to have wings?"

"Your mother did." Percy admitted. "Such trademark things are often passed down to children like you."

"Hey!" Annabeth protested. "That's what I said to Luna last week. You stole my line!"

"Did somebody say Stoll?" Two heads peeked around the corner and wiggled their eyebrows. I blinked, and one of the heads was gone. The next thing I knew, one of them was behind me - and was studying my wallet.

"Hey!" I said angrily. "Give it back!"

"Eh, it's only mortal money anyway." The boy shrugged.

He handed me my wallet with half of the change it originally. I sighed and clutched it, daring the other boy to come and grab it. On further reflection, they looked like twins.

"Conner Stoll." The boy who had stolen my wallet introduced himself. "And that's Travis."

"You can probably tell that we're twins." Travis said.

"Anyway," Nico said. "Stolls, you can take Scarlet here to the Hades Cabin. I think she'll be sharing it."

"What do you mean?" I asked. "I thought you said I'm not a daughter of Hades?"

"You're not." Percy said grimly. "You're a daughter of Nyx."
