Chapter Four

"Is she okay?" I asked Carlisle worriedly.

Melody was sitting out in the garden on one of the benches. She was just staring out towards the forest with her back turned away from us. She looked like a inhumanly beautiful statue she was so still but she looked so intense.

"I don't know son. She's been out there all morning. We couldn't even get her to eat breakfast. Poor thing didn't sleep any last night and wandered up to the house. I sat with her for hours, she was very quiet, and I had to press her to speak. Do you think that's normal?" Carlisle explained sounding exhausted.

"Maybe, she seems like she doesn't get any healthy interaction. You heard her schedule yesterday dad. All she does is train all day with the Volturi guard!" I ran my fingers through my hair.

"She's troubled." Renesmee suddenly came into the kitchen and watched Melody with us through the back window "I can tell, we have the same look." She smiled sadly at us.

"Maybe you should go sit with her Renesmee." I smiled at her.

"No." She shook her head and I was taken back a little "No, she needs you. She needs a parent. A healthy parent to show her a healthy loving relationship." She smiled at me.

"She's used to big bad Volturi members remember?" Renesmee kissed my cheek and skipped out of the room.

I carefully walked outside and sat next to her.

"Is this seat taken?" I smiled at her trying to get her to do something other than stare.

"Hmm? Oh, um, no." She answered seemingly distraught. Her voice was quiet and sounded airy and raw.

"Melody, what's wrong?" I asked as she continued starring deep into the woods.

"I've just been thinking. I get like this sometimes, where all I can do is sit and think and at the same time I can't form a coherent thought." She shook her head but continued starring.

"Why? Did something happen?" I asked becoming concerned.

"It's my way of processing everything I suppose. I've only ever been around full vampires, who have minds that can think of countless things all at once and still be able to talk and act normally. I was always expected to keep on tract an follow along so I've always had to push myself, my head just can't keep up with my heart sometimes." She smiled sadly.

"When did this start?" I asked.

"The first time I got this way was when I got a concussion from Jane. She yelled at me and said some pretty horrible things." Tears brimmed her eyes "But I pushed through the pain and got caught up in my thoughts." She ripped her eyes away from the tree line, painfully, and looked up at me.

"That's very brilliant of you." I smiled at her.

"It's nothing big. Nothing praise worthy. Just my reality." She stood up and shook her head.

"If you ever need to talk things through, or just need someone, please talk to me Melody." I grabbed her dainty hand "I'm your father and I'm here for you and I love you no matter what." I squeezed her hand.

"Love? How can you love me when you don't even know me?" She questioned sounding deeply hurt.

"The same way I love Renesmee. Because your my daughter. I already know you. I've known you since you were born, we just didn't realize it." I smiled at her.

"I am not Renesmee. However much I wish I was I am not." Tears escaped her eyes and she quickly brushed them away with the back of her hands.

"I know you're not Renesmee." I laughed slightly "You're Elizabeth Melody and your my daughter and that's enough for me to love you deeply." I stood up and wrapped my arms around her tightly.

"Grazie." She smiled at me when we stepped apart.

"Let's go inside. Everyone's been worried about you." I took her hand and pulled her along with me.

"Melody! Hey, I was just fixing to sit down and draw do want to join me?" Renesmee bounced up to her and took her other arm.

"Oh! You draw?" She asked.

"Renesmee is a wonderful artist." I smiled and Renesmee blushed deeply.

"I'm afraid I have no artistic talent. But I would love to observe." Melody smiled and Renesmee pulled her over to the couch.

In groups the rest of the family joined us.

"So Melody, are you feeling better?" Jasper asked surprising her.

"Empath." She stated directly and nodded "I knew it was something emotionally related."

"You didn't answer my question." He smiled at her.

"Maybe because I was trying to sidetrack you." She laughed slightly "Yes, I'm feeling better I suppose."

"What was wrong?" Bella asked coming into the room and stood beside me.

"Melody was just thinking some things over. Nothing to worry about love." I rubbed Bella's arm and Melody looked forward with an intense expression.

"Melody?" Renesmee tried to get her attention.

"Melody!" Renesmee shook her slightly.

She turned and looked Renesmee deep in the eyes and coughed. Spitting up blood.

Carlisle was across the room in an instant and lowered her onto the floor. She kept coughing up blood and it took everything inside of me not to lose control.

"What's wrong?" Bella cried out.

"Melody told me about her health problems last night, they're extensive." Carlisle answered. He hit Melody once in the ribs, very hard, and a pool of blood shot out of her mouth and nose and she sucked in a deep breath. She sat up quickly and grabbed onto Carlisle shirt as he coached her through regaining her breathing.

"I'm fine. Thank you. Sorry." She spoke softly and uncurled herself from Carlisle.

"Don't ever apologize for something out of your control Melody." He looked her straight in the eyes and she nodded mildly.

"Let's get you upstairs and clean you up." Esme helped her up and practically carried her upstairs.

"What was that?" Renesmee asked as she brushed off the little specks of blood Melody had coughed on her.

"Melody suffers from sever lung problems. Whenever she has any bodily injury that causes internal bleeding instead of it healing quickly like it does with you the blood rushes to her lungs and fills them while her body repairs the damaged area. I think her genes picked up a stagnant Influenza virus and that's what damages her system." He explained and I felt my dead heart sink.

"She has those terrible medical problems because of me?" I asked.

"Son, it's out of our control. It's just from your genes that copied the virus permanently. It wouldn't affect her so much if she fed herself properly." He grumbled.

"She has an aversion to blood. We need to respect that Carlisle. She's been forced to do things her whole life and gone blindly into things she's regretful of now. If we push her she may snap from all of the tension." Jasper explained and reminded me of something.

"Earlier when we were talking outside she turned on me at one point when I had said I loved her. Like Renesmee said she doesn't know a healthy relationship. We need to be cautious of overwhelming her with emotion." I addressed everyone.

"Let's just act normally, she's almost done cleaning up." Alice said and we all settled to do various things.

Renesmee was drawing, Alice and Rosalie discussing fashion magazines, Jasper and Emmet watching baseball, Carlisle cleaning up the blood soaked carpet, and I pulled Bella over to the piano.

"Wow. Are you sure your all vampires?" Melody laughed coming into the room wearing a fresh dress and her wet hair pinned up on top of her head. Her eyes were sunken in and surrounded by dark purplish circles, her vibrant green eyes looked dulled and tired, and her cheeks were flushed.

"Pretty sure sis." Renesmee laughed and Melody smiled widely at her.

"Wow!" Melody suddenly exclaimed and we all looked at her worriedly "Did you draw that?" She pointed at Renesmees picture.

"Yes." She responded shyly "Do you like it? I'm not done with it yet." She asked.

"Like it? I love it! I've never seen anything like it before." Melody sat next to her on the couch and admired it.

"What did you draw Nessie?" Rosalie asked.

"Mom and dad." She answered turning it around to show us all. It was myself and Bella sitting at the piano, my fingers extended over the keys and Bella's hair falling softly around her shoulders. It really was beautiful already without color or our facial features.

"I think you should leave it like that Renesmee." Emmet told her "Makes it more unique like you." He grinned at her and she set it aside.

"Okay, I want to draw something else now anyway." Renesmee agreed.

"What are you going to draw?" Melody asked forcing her raw voice to show her excitement.

"You!" Renesmee giggled.
