Chapter Four.

Memories of the Past.

It has been a week since Yusuf and Armaan were paired up as partners. But Yusuf was too cautious of what he would say in front of her as he didn't want her to know who he was.

Each time, Emad Ahmed advised him not to lie and tell Armaan his real name. Yusuf was adamant because, in his mind, he couldn't help but keep his distance even though what happened was resolved even before his operation when he was a toddler.

"Yu...Faiz," Emad Ahmed calls out to his friend but changes the name as soon as he sees Armaan coming toward them.

Yusuf was confused about why his friend called him by his father's name. Before he asked Emad Ahmed, he heard Armaan's voice and Yusuf immediately knew why his friend called him by that name.

Emad Ahmed moved close to his friend and just shook his head. He knew that Yusuf didn't want to hurt Armaan but that was bound to happen.

Yusuf watched as Armaan talked to her friends, laughing. That's how he always wants her to be. And he couldn't take that away from her.

Yusuf started fidgeting with the necklace that was around his neck. He didn't notice how Armaan was staring at him.

She moved closer to him and squinted her eyes to see if it was the same necklace that she had given Yusuf before he left the country.

Yusuf looked at her with his eyes wide open knowing that she might put the pieces together.

"Where did you get that necklace?" Armaan asks Yusuf who unconsciously touches the necklace that was around his neck.

"Why? What does it matter to you?" he asks her back instead of answering her questions.

Maybe she knows me but she couldn't. I changed so much. No, she doesn't know me. Why did I have to wear this type of shirt again?

"Because someone who meant everything to me gave me half a heart...but it couldn't be you could it?" she says, asking herself while shaking her head.

"Who is this person?" Yusuf asks her.

"Someone who I thought would never forget me but I was wrong. Anyways, I will see you in class", Armaan says walking away and entering the next class.

Yusuf didn't want to tell her who he was.

He was important to her until he realized that his Aru had grown into a beautiful woman who would always have his heart.

"Why don't you just tell her?..."

"I can't break her heart again. And you know why...."

"It won't come back, Yusuf. It has been almost twelve years now. You are and will always be cancer free. Tell her before someone else does and she might end up hating you," his best friend Emad Ahmed says to him.

"I know but I can still see my parents' faces when they found out and Aru when she gladly donated her bone marrow to me. I have this fear that all of this might be just a dream...."

"I will be there for you and so will she. But you have to remember not to push her away when you two will need each other," Emad Ahmed advises his friend.

"Thank you but for now I will concentrate on my studies and then maybe just maybe I will tell her who I am and how I feel about her," Yusuf says to Emad Ahmed.

Flashback when they were kids.

It was Zainab's second birthday, and all the kids were invited to Hayat and Aayan's house because it was the best place to host all the kids' birthday parties. Hayat has always wanted to have a place like this and Aayan understood what his wife wanted.

Especially when something happened to her when Iman and Azhar were almost four years old. It hurt them more than anything.

They both wanted their grandchildren to spend as much time with them as possible.

Hayat looked at Armaan and Yusuf with their medical toys. Each one of them wore a stethoscope around their neck and went around to check on people who were there.

"I think I am left to check on my father, what about you, Yusuf?" Armaan asks her friend.

"I am heading to check on mum and then see if Grandma Hayat needs a check up too," he tells her. "You should come with me too when I do that," he added, holding her hand.

Their parents watched as the two toddlers ran toward their respective parents to give them a check-up.

But unfortunately, Yusuf fell, making Armaan rush to his side. He had hurt his hand and it was bleeding.

"Are you alright?"

"Yes, I am..."

He didn't finish what he was saying when blood was coming out of his arm. He has a big gush on his left arm that would leave a scar because he fell on a big rock.

"Come on, let's get you cleaned and dress that wound," Faryal says, carrying her son inside the house while Armaan follows them behind.

Yusuf didn't even cry when Aunt Sameera was dressing his wound. He looked at her with concentration and wanted to know more about what she was doing.

Armaan only left his side once Sameera explained to Faryal how to take care of the wound and how to clean it.

Armaan turned to face Yusuf with sadness in her eyes.

"I am sorry, that I made you run..."

"No, it isn't your fault. I didn't see the stone while I was running to see my mother," he says to her smiling.

Armaan was shocked that she remembered hers and Yusuf's almost final memory before he left.

I could find out if he has the scar but his name is Faiz and not Yusuf. I don't want to hurt myself any further because everyone made a choice and so did him. He made a choice not to look for me or even try to find me. Armaan, it is time to work hard and never look back at the past. The past will always belong in the past and not in my future.

When someone wants you in their life, they will do anything for you to be in it. It doesn't matter how busy they are, they will always have and make time for you no matter what.
