Chapter 31: It's Seth, right?
Thursday afternoon everyone in Arlington Heights gathered in the square for Homecoming Fest. Bayley and Finn were sitting on a hay bail away from the crowd.
"Thanks again.. for letting me stay with you." Finn said casually.
"You can stay as long as you need to, Finn. I just wish you would tell me what all of this is about." Bayley said.
Finn glanced over at her for a moment.
"It's not really important." Finn said.
Bayley let out a concerning smile.
"Whatever it is.. I'm here for you." Bayley said as she put her hand on his leg to comfort him.
Behind them, Sami was walking by when he saw the two of them together. He watched for a moment as Finn put his hand on Bayley's and smiled at her.
Next to the hot dog truck, Carmella was sitting at a picnic table with Paige and Renee.
"Two hotdogs with ketchup only." Corey said as he handed Paige and Renee their food.
Carmella let out a big smile when Corey held up a corn dog with ketchup and mustard swirled around it.
"The guys in the truck made me do the little swirly thing myself. Apparently they don't do corn dog art here." Corey joked as he sat down and handed the corn dog to Carmella.
Carmella shared a laughed with Paige and Renee.
"I told you guys he would do it." Carmella said.
Corey looked at her in confusion.
"Wait, what?" Corey asked Carmella.
"I bet them ten bucks that you'd do the swirl thing if I asked." Carmella said.
Corey's face got really serious.
"You didn't want the swirl?" He asked in disappointment.
Carmella smiled at him for a moment.
"I love the swirl, Corey. Thank you." Carmella told him.
Corey admired Carmella's smile for a moment before realizing that Paige and Renee were watching him. Suddenly, Adam walked by with Kyle and shot Carmella a wink. Corey furrowed his eyebrows as Carmella gave Adam a smile.
"What a- what was that?" Corey asked nervously.
"Mella! Adam is a total player, you can't." Renee warned her.
"Can't what?" Corey asked.
"Relax, I'm just having a little fun." Carmella told her.
"What kind of fun?" Corey asked curiously.
"Look, now that I'm done with Colin, I-." Carmella began to say before Corey stopped her.
"Done with Colin?" Corey asked with widened eyes.
All the girls watched him in amusement.
"You uh.. you're done with Colin?" Corey asked as he tried play it cool.
Carmella watched as Corey scratched the back of his head anxiously.
"Yeah, I thought I mentioned that to you." Carmella said as she casually took a sip of her soda.
"No.. I'm sure you didn't." Corey told her.
"Well anyway, what I'm saying is that now that I'm single I just want to have some fun, you know? I don't really want to be in another relationship right now." Carmella told them.
Corey facial expression just changed from confusion to excitement to disappointment in a span on thirty seconds.
"I'll be right back." Carmella said as she got up and walked away.
Corey looked down in frustration and tried to think to himself.
"Dude. Make your move or somebody else will." Paige told Corey.
He looked back and saw Carmella approach Adam. Renee suddenly saw Dolph walking through the square.
"Excuse me." Renee said as she got up.
Paige watched with concern as Renee approached Dolph.
"Hey." Renee said awkwardly.
"Hi." Dolph said in confusion as he glanced over at Paige.
"Look, I know things have been a little weird between us lately... But Paige told me how you've been helping her. And too be honest, after everything that has happened with the three of us, I think you're a really good friend for still being there for her." Renee told him.
Dolph looked down at Renee as a rush of guilt came over him.
"No, you don't have to thank me.. After the way I acted, it was the least I could do. Besides, we've all been friends forever, I would have been a dick not to help her." Dolph said.
Renee let out a slight smile.
"You hungry?" Renee asked him.
Dolph looked over at Paige and Corey as they sat on the picnic table.
"Sure." Dolph said happily.
Renee let out a big smile and lead him over to the table. The four friends sat together as if nothing had ever happened between them.
Sasha and Alexa were walking around together when they stopped for ice cream.
"Two chocolate cones please." Alexa told the woman behind the booth.
Sasha looked over at Alexa and let out a smile.
"I'm glad we don't hate each other anymore." Sasha told her.
Alexa faced Sasha and tucked her hair behind her ear. Sasha looked into her eyes in confusion for a moment.
"I could never hate you, Sasha." Alexa told her.
Sasha gave her an awkward smile before the woman behind the booth handed them their ice cream.
"Thank you." Alexa said as they began to walk away.
Sasha licked her ice cream slowly as Alexa gave her a curious glace
"So where's Miz?" Sasha asked.
"Um.. He should be here any minute." Alexa told her.
"I can't believe homecoming is this weekend already." Sasha said.
"Yeah, about that.. Who is this girl you're bringing?" Alexa asked.
"Her name is Tessa.. She's cute." Sasha told her.
"Cute how?" Alexa asked.
"What do you mean?" Sasha asked her.
"Like what qualities do girls like in other girls?" Alexa asked.
"Um.. I don't know, different stuff I guess." Sasha said.
"Come on, you know you can talk to me about this, right?" Alexa asked.
"I know.. It's just kind of weird." Sasha said.
"Come on.. I really want to know." Alexa told her.
Sasha let out a small laugh.
"Okay.. Well different people are into different things. But I like girls with confidence.. Girls that are their own person, you know?" Sasha asked.
Alexa nodded her head in approval.
"I love girls with long curly hair and a good sense of humor. And I don't like huge boobs, but not small ones either.. I don't know, I guess I'm kind of picky when it comes to boobs." Sasha laughed.
Alexa let out an awkward laugh.
"I also like girls that don't wear too much makeup, maybe a little eyeliner sometimes but I like more of the natural look." Sasha continued.
Alexa was listening intently to what Sasha was telling her when Miz suddenly approached them.
"Hey, babe." Miz said as he greeted her with a kiss.
Alexa was a little taken back by his presence.
"Hey." Alexa said.
"What are you guys talking about?" Miz asked.
"Nothing." Alexa blurted out.
Miz looked at Alexa for a moment.
"Okay.. That wasn't suspicious at all." Miz laughed.
Sasha glanced over and saw Seth and Becky sharing a kiss.
"Excuse me for a minute." Sasha said as she walked away.
Seth was standing with his hands on Becky's hips while she wrapped her arms around his neck.
"Okay.. I've gotta go close up at the cafe then I'm all yours." Becky told him.
Seth let out a grin as Becky walked away from him.
"You guys look good together." Sasha said with an ache in her heart.
Seth looked over at Sasha approached him.
"Hey, Sash." Seth said.
"How's it going?" Sasha asked as she sat down on a nearby bail of hay.
Seth walked over and sat down next to her.
"My parents are getting a divorce." Seth told her.
Sasha looked at Seth with sympathy.
"I'm so sorry.." She tried to say.
"No, it's okay. To be honest, I'm actually kind of glad. They should have gotten divorced a long time ago." Seth said.
"But you're still staying at Luke's?" Sasha asked.
"Um.. Yeah. My dad left town a few days ago to do god knows what, and my mom.. She's not really in a good place right now." Seth told her.
"Is she taking pills again?" Sasha asked curiously.
Seth nodded silently.
"Damn.. You've got a lot going on right now." Sasha said.
"But at least I've got Becks. She makes all this shit seem a hell of a lot less worse than it actually is." Seth told her.
Sasha looked down awkwardly for a moment.
"Thank you by the way for what you and Nicole have been doing. You guys being nice to her is all I could ever ask for." Seth said.
"Don't thank me.. That was all Nicole's idea. You know she's always there for you." Sasha told him.
Seth let out a small smile.
"Yeah.. she is." Seth said to himself.
"Miz told me and Lexi what happened the other day with Roman. Are you okay?" Sasha asked him.
"Yeah.. It just sucks, you know? He's one of my best friends and now it's like we're strangers. But I can't blame him you know? I chose her.. I gave up everything for her." Seth said.
Sasha felt a sharp pain in her chest as she tried to look away.
"Yeah.. It takes a lot of guts to sacrifice so much for one person." Sasha said as she tried to fight back tears.
"But she's worth it, you know? I'd have to be a fool to not choose her." Seth said.
Sasha felt a rush of guilt come over her as he tried to fake a smile.
"And you're happy?" Sasha asked him with hesitance.
"I am." Seth said.
Sasha looked at Seth for a moment.
"And maybe I lost Roman.. But at least I've still got you." Seth said as he put his arm around Sasha.
Sasha's face turned pale when she realized how big of a mess she had created.
At the cafe, Becky was closing up for the day. As she went to lock the door, Roman approached from outside. She looked at him through the glass door for a moment before stepping back. Roman let himself inside.
"Can I get a coffee?" Roman asked her.
Becky looked at him with concern for a moment.
"I'm not here to argue or fight.. I just want a coffee." Roman told her.
Becky took a deep breath as she contemplated what Roman had just said.
"Fine." Becky said.
Roman sat down at the counter while Becky made him a cup of coffee. He watched her for a moment with heavy eyes.
"Do you think we would have worked?" Roman asked her suddenly.
Becky stopped what she was doing and froze at his question.
"You know.. Maybe if we had never came back to town that summer.. Or if there hadn't been so many obstacles for us to overcome?" Roman asked her.
"Obstacles?" Becky asked as she handed him the cup of coffee.
"You know what I mean." Roman said.
"I think we would have been golden, Roman.. If you hadn't chosen your reputation over me." Becky said.
Roman shook his head.
"I thought I was protecting you, Becky.." Roman reminded her.
Becky stared at him for a moment.
"You were the one I needed protecting from." Becky said suddenly.
Roman felt sharp pain in his chest as he looked up at Becky. He took a deep breath and tried not to break out in tears.
"Do you remember when you told me to choose between you and Seth?" Roman asked her suddenly.
Becky froze for a moment when she realized where he was going with his question.
"You wanted me to choose between my best friend.. and the love of my life." Roman told her.
Becky looked at him helplessly as her eyes filled with tears.
"And Becky.. You were the love of my life. Hell, you still are." Roman told her.
"Roman." She tried to stop him.
"I couldn't choose between the two of you. And it's funny because it was Seth that got between us. He was our obstacle. And when it was his turn to make that same choice that I had to make.. He chose you." Roman told her with a crack in his voice.
A tear fell from Becky's face when she saw the pain in Roman's eyes.
"And I don't know what hurts more.. My best friend choosing a girl over me.. Or knowing that he had the balls to the make the right decision and I didn't." Roman said.
Becky watched him with a ache in her chest.
"You know.. if I could go back in time I would choose you, Becks. I would choose you every damn time." Roman told her.
Becky looked down at the ground, trying to hide her emotions. Roman suddenly reached over the table and grabbed her hand.
"I miss you, Becks." Roman told her.
Becky looked up at Roman apologetically.
"You have no idea what it is like to miss someone so much that sometimes you forget to breathe. Or how it stings every time you hear their name.." Roman began to tell her.
"I do, actually." Becky said with a crack in her voice.
Roman gave her a hopeful look.
"Dean." Roman said in disappointment when he realized who she was talking about.
"You need to move on, Roman. You deserve to be happy.." Becky tried to tell him.
"I want to be happy with you." Roman said.
Becky looked up at him for a moment as tears continued to fall from her face.
"I'm in love with him, Roman.." Becky told him.
Roman looked at her skeptically for a moment.
"Right." Roman said as he got up and began to leave.
Becky looked down at his full coffee cup sitting on the counter.
"You know it's funny.. You keep telling me you're in love with him or you say you're in love with someone else but you never say his name." Roman told her.
Becky gave him a curious look.
"It's Seth, right? He's the one you're in love with?" Roman asked as he opened the door.
She hesitated to answer his question.
"Of course it's Seth. Who else would I be in love with?" Becky asked rhetorically.
Roman looked at her seriously for a moment.
"Just don't break his heart, okay? I hate him for taking you away from me.. But he's still like a little brother to me. He doesn't deserve to feel what it's like to lose you. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy." Roman told her before walking out of the cafe.
Becky stood there for a moment with an unsettling feeling in her stomach. She wiped the tears form her eyes and faked a smile before finishing closing up.
Later that evening at Homecoming Fest, Bayley was walking in the square with Kyle.
"You guys trashed his car?" Kyle asked in disbelief.
"We did." Bayley assured him.
"Who's idea was it?" Kyle asked curiously.
Bayley gave him a mischievous smirk.
"No way. You?" Kyle asked.
"He had it coming." Bayley told him.
Kyle let out a small laugh.
"I have to say.. I'm impressed " Kyle told her.
Bayley laughed along with him for a moment before Adam approached them.
"Awe, don't the two of you look adorable." Adam mocked them.
Kyle rolled his eyes and Bayley just stared at Adam, completely unimpressed.
"You want cotton candy?" Kyle asked.
"Sure." Bayley said.
Adam looked over his shoulder and watched as Kyle walked up to the food truck.
"You and lover boy over there are getting pretty close, huh?" Adam asked suddenly.
Bayley rolled her eyes at his comment.
"We still have a few days until homecoming.. This is your last chance if you want to upgrade your date to the full package." Adam told her with confidence.
Bayley burst out in laughter as Adam's confidence slowly faded away.
"Nice try but I think I'm pretty satisfied with my current date." Bayley said before Kyle returned with Bayley's cotton candy.
"What are you guys talking about?" Kyle asked.
"Apparently Adam here still can't find a date to homecoming." Bayley said as she kept eye contact with Adam.
"Dude, why don't you ask your mystery crush?" Kyle asked.
Adam looked at Kyle in embarrassment.
"Mystery crush?" Bayley asked curiously.
"Yeah, Adam used to have this crush on a girl in like junior high but he would never tell us who she was.. Hence, the mystery crush." Kyle told her.
"You're making shit up." Adam said.
"Who is she?" Bayley asked curiously.
"I do have a date by the way.. Liv Morgan is going with me." Adam tried to change the subject.
Kyle and Bayley shared another laugh.
"I'm pretty sure she's only going with you because no one else asked her." Bayley joked.
"Whatever." Adam said before walking away.
Kyle shook his head and let out another small laugh.
"There was totally a mystery crush, by the way." Kyle told her.
Paige was waiting by Renee's car when Dolph walked up to her.
"Waiting for your girlfriend?" Dolph asked.
"What did she say to you?" Paige asked.
"She just thanked me for being there for you.. And to be honest, I felt a little guilty." Dolph told her.
"Dolph." Paige tried to stop him.
"You have to tell her." Dolph said.
"No. We hooked up at few times, Dolph.. It stopped the minute I realized what I was doing." Paige reminded him.
"We still cheated." Dolph said.
"Yeah, but I was in a really fucked up place, okay? What good is going to come from bringing all of that shit up now?" Paige asked in frustration.
"She deserves to know.." Dolph tried to say.
"I can't lose her, Dolph.. Not now." Paige said with a crack in her voice.
"Maybe she will understand." Dolph suggested.
"I'm not telling her.. It's only going to hurt her." Paige said.
Dolph looked at her with concern, knowing that not telling Renee was going to come back to bite them.
Roman was sitting on a park bench trying to calm himself down after his conversation with Becky.
"You're just torturing yourself, you know that right?" Nikki asked as she approached him.
Roman looked up at his uncomfortably.
"I saw you in there talking with her." Nikki said as she sat down.
"What are you doing?" Roman asked her.
"At some point you are going to have to stop hating me." Nikki told him.
Roman looked over at her and shook his head.
"I trusted you, Nikki. I thought you were my friend." Roman said.
"I am your friend, Roman. But Seth is also my friend, okay. I was in a tough position." Nikki told him.
Roman let out an annoying laugh.
"Don't act like you were torn between like two friends or some stupid shit like that.. You and I both know Seth isn't just your friend. You'd take his side over mine any day." Roman said.
Nikki looked down shamefully.
"You're right.. I have a soft spot when it comes to Seth, but I'm sorry.. I should have told you about him and Becky." Nikki tried to apologize.
Roman looked down and tried to think to himself for a moment.
"He broke up with you for her, didn't he?" Roman asked.
Nikki looked up at Roman apologetically.
"He cheated on you with Sasha.. Then he sneaks around with Becky behind both of our back and you still kept his dirty little secrets?" Roman asked her.
"Like I said.. I have a soft spot for him." Nikki said unfortunately.
"You know.. Anyone else in my position wouldn't want anything to do with Becky ever again. They'd hate her for breaking their heart. But me.. I can't stop loving her.. I can't hate her. And if she changed her mind and wanted to be with me, I would take her back in a heart beat." Roman said.
"I don't know if that's stupid or romantic." Nikki laughed.
"It sounds a little familiar, doesn't it?" Roman asked her.
Nikki looked at him awkwardly for a moment.
"You think I'm still in love with Seth?" Nikki asked.
"Well aren't you?" Roman asked her.
Nikki looked down and took a deep breath.
"It doesn't matter what I feel or don't feel. He's happy with her.. that's all I've wanted, is for him to be happy. So I'm trying to move on.. we have to let them be happy, Roman." Nikki told him with an ache in her chest.
Outside the cafe, Renee was walking down the sidewalk when Aj stopped her.
"Hey." Aj said.
Renee stopped and looked at her for a moment.
"Aj.." Renee said awkwardly.
"You've been avoiding me again." Aj told her.
Renee took a deep breath as they stood there on the empty sidewalk. Aj walked toward her as the sun began to set.
"So what, she just apologizes for how shitty of a girlfriend she has been and you forgive her? I mean what the hell, Renee?" Aj asked.
"She has a lot going on right now." Renee tried to explain.
"That doesn't give her an excuse to treat you like shit." Aj said.
"Look, you don't get it. Me and Paige.. It's complicated." Renee told her.
"Are you in love with her?" Aj asked suddenly.
Renee froze for a moment while Aj waited for an answer.
"She's my best friend, Aj." Renee said.
"But are you still in love with her? I mean after secretly being in love with her for all these years then finally getting her.. Is it still there? Are you still in love with her? Is she everything you thought she'd be?" Aj asked.
"What are you doing?" Renee asked.
Aj walked closer to her so they were now face to face.
"You can keep telling yourself that nothing has changed between the two of you but you and I both know that's not true.. And maybe things would still be great between the two of you if she hadn't given me the opportunity to get close to you.. but she did. She took her eyes off of you, Renee.. If she was a half decent girlfriend then maybe we wouldn't have gotten as close as we did.. But she's not a good girlfriend, Renee.. And we did get close. Close enough for me to do this." Aj said as she pressed her lips against Renee's.
Renee let herself fall into the kiss as her stomach filled with butterflies. Aj held Renee's face as her heart grew warm. Renee suddenly pulled away.
"Aj." Renee tried to stop her.
"Close enough for me to know that you're not in love with her anymore." Aj said as she looked into Renee's eyes.
Tears began falling down Renee's face as Aj backed away slowly.
"I'll be waiting for you." Aj said as she walked away.
Renee tried to shake the ache in her chest as she wiped the tears from her eyes.
Brie was sitting at a picnic table by herself when Roman approached her.
"Dance with me?" Roman asked her.
Brie looked up at him and let out a smile as the song, "It's You" by Ali Gatie began to began to play throughout the square. She took his hand and lead her out to where a few other coupes were dancing.
It's you, it's always you
Roman and Brie took each other's hand as they began to dance.
If I'm ever gonna fall in love, I know it's gon' be you
Roman looked over her shoulder as he embraced his moment with Brie.
It's you, it's always you
Becky was walking by with Seth when she saw Roman dancing with Brie.
Met a lot of people, but nobody feels like you
Seth noticed the reluctant smile Becky let out.
So please don't break my heart, don't tear me apart
I know how it starts, trust me, I've been broken before
"Are you okay?" Seth asked as Roman spun Brie around.
Don't break me again, I am delicate
"Yeah, I'm good." Becky said as she grabbed Seth's hand and smiled up at him.
I know how it starts, trust me, I've been broken before
Mandy was watching from across the square. Even though she wished it were her dancing with Roman, she was happy to see him smiling.
I've been broken.
Yeah. I know how it feels
To be open
And then find out your love isn't real.
I'm still hurting.
Yeah. I'm hurting inside.
I'm so scared to fall in love,
But if it's you then I'll try.
Seth and Becky were walking on the opposite side of the square as they made their way back to Luke's apartment.
"So I was thinking.. We totally need dorky nicknames for each other." Becky said as she held Seth's hand.
"Do we?" Seth asked curiously.
"Yeah, we definitely do." Becky joked.
"Okay.. I could call you pooky bear?" Seth suggested.
Becky gave him unsatisfying look.
"If you call me pooky bear then I'm calling you stud muffin." Becky joked.
"Pooky bear is off the table, got it." Seth said.
They both shared laugh as they approached Luke's apartment building. Seth pulled Becky over and pressed her up against the building.
"Watcha doin' stud muffin?" Becky asked in amusement.
Seth let out a small laugh before leaning in and kissing her slowly. Becky's stomach filled with butterflies as she held her face. For a split second, Becky herself enjoy the moment but she still couldn't get Roman's words out of her head. She suddenly pulled away when she saw a familiar, classic, red mustang parked in front of Luke's building.
"Dean?" Becky asked in surprise.
