Gone (Kal'tsit x male Doctor)

A/N: The song above is called Unlasting Love, and it delves into the possible relationship the Doctor could have had with Kal'tsit pre amnesia. Totally recommend watching it. Someone named Panic20 was apparently the first to upload it in Bilibili. Hope y'all enjoy!

"I can't keep doing this! All this responsibility, all this death, it does no one any good!"

"Why do you feel remorse now? You didn't care before."

"Yeah. Well, I didn't know what I was getting into back then. Didn't think we would lose so many for the cause."

"You're the only one who can do this. No one else can bare this burden."

"That can't be true! It, it just can't Kal'tsit. I can't believe that. Surely there's someone else."

A glance downwards, alighting on a photo frame. There were four people in it, all smiling faces. Two bunnies and a lynx and the Doctor himself. All of them had been so happy. Too bad one of the people in that photo was dead. She had died . . . and was never coming back.

Perhaps all of them had lost a piece of themselves the day she passed.

But there was a more pressing matter at hand, because she could tell just who he was looking at.

"No. You can't possibly . . ." She wouldn't dare say it out loud, lest it be confirmed as the truth. Surely Kal'tsit was wrong and he would tell her as much.

But the man just smiled. It was the same lopsided grin that had infuriated her back when they met all those years ago but had long since grown fond of. The two of them would remain by each other's sides until the end of time or one of their untimely deaths. Whichever one came first.

"She'd be a great leader. The hope for the future." His tone was wistful, as though seeing something that was yet to come.

Outrage surged within. "She can't. She's too young." Amiya could not bear this burden; the weight would ultimately crush her.

Doctor Y/N sighed, shoulders drooping as his head hung. The tiredness from before was back, wrapping over him like a heavy blanket. "The same thing could've been said for us once. Life doesn't wait for us to grow, doesn't wait for us to be ready. Sometimes we have to act and adapt."

Her own voice became bitter. "Like how you're adapting now? You can't just run away Y/N."

Doctor shook his head. Pushing his chair back, the man rose up from his desk. The height difference wasn't the jarring difference like it was between Doctor and Amiya, but it was still there nonetheless. She had to raise her head slightly to look into his eyes. They were y/e/c, so full of depth and knowledge. And unsurprisingly, full of pain. Perhaps, and this was the first time she had ever realized it, this burden was too much for anyone to carry alone.

She still knew so little.

"I'm not running away. I just, I need a break from this Kal'tsit."

She frowned, her green gaze averting to her folded hands. There was a ring on one hand, a beautiful gold band embedded with emeralds and a sole diamond at the center. She remembered the day he got down on one knee. Before things had become so difficult, he had asked her to marry him.

"Do you need a break from us too?"

Kal'tsit despised insecurity and vulnerability within herself. While she was not a leader, this sort of emotion would do her no good. A tender hand reached out and caressed her face, guiding her attention back to the man in front of her. Y/N smiled at her, slowly leaning down. When their lips met it felt like coming home. Warmth spread down to her toes and somewhere —at the back of her mind— Monst3r sang happily with a low humming tune. It liked her happiness, fed on her emotions.

When they parted, a smile was on Y/N's face. "I'll never need a break from you. Please believe that."

"Then why the sudden trip?" She was confused.

Doctor Y/N sighed. "It's like I said earlier, I need some space to cope. And, well, Chernobog supposedly has had a break through on the cure to Oripathy. I need to go there, find out if it's true." He leaned down and pressed a kiss to the back of her hand, looking up at her through fluttering eyelashes. "I want a day to come where you, Amiya and all the Infected can be cured. I'll do whatever it takes to make that happen."

And how could Kal'tsit argue with that. She too dreamed of a day when peace would come. And so she found herself nodding, and wishing him luck.

Little did she know this would be a fatal mistake.

Because Catastrophe would come to Chernobog a few months later.

And with it, Reunion.

And with them, danger beyond comprehension.

Her love would not die, but his memories of them would be taken from him and they would never be the same.

The love she knew was gone.

Gone.

Gone.
