The beginning
Cold...
She opened her eyes, feeling her body shiver as what felt like ice creeped all over. Her head was pounding as she shifted her position. Namari... that's right. Her name, she let out a pained whine when she moved more, her name was Namari. She was five years old, no that wasn't right. She wasn't supposed to be a kid... but how did she know that? Blurred images swam before her as she looked around trying to figure out where she was. When she looked down over her body, her first assumption was correct. She was a little kid, so she had to be five. Though, it didn't make sense, why was her brain screaming that she was an adult?
She blinked her eye's a few times, willing them to focus as she moved around some more only to groan in pain and regret. Her body hurt so bad, she ground her teeth together and looked down over herself as her vision began to clear up. Her cloths, if you could call it that, were ratted and torn and not to mention covered in grim. Who knows what else. She had scabbed wound's all over her arms and legs and from the pain in her face and head, she probably had some wound's there as well. Briefly her mind thought she may get an infection from all the dirt that was most likely in her cuts, but she didn't know where to go or what to do. Heck, she didn't even know where she was, just that she was curled up in a tight ball against some nasty smelling brick wall. Every twitch of her muscles made her body scream in pain and her scabs burn even worse. Not to mention her pounding headache.
What exactly happened to her? How did she end up so filthy and wounded?
When she looked around more, she could see she was in some sort of nasty alley way, a long one at that with brick walls on either side towering over her. There were some fire escape's that led up to the roofs of buildings. The brick walls themselves seemed to be very old and looked like it was slowly crumbling with age. The floor she sat upon was covered in patches of unidentifiable liquid. She knew one thing; she couldn't stay here. With no clue on where she was, she managed to force her injured frame to stand with the help of the nasty wall. It was nighttime, she deduced from how dark the sky was, and she felt confused and disorientated.
Lost.
Tired.
Afraid...
Alone.
Tears stung her eyes as panic set in, her ears ringing while the world felt like it was spinning on its axis. Where was she? Did she have any family? Friends? Did anyone know she was missing? Why was she here? Her nose began to run as tears started streaming down and a whimper left her throat. She was scared, her childlike body was entering into panic mode, and the nasty darkening alley way wasn't helping to quell her fears. She didn't think she could stay there and so she slowly began to limp her way down the barely lit area towards what she thought sounded like cars in the distance. She knew she needed to find people, someone to help her. So, she continued on, staggering forward as she shuffled her feet. She parted her dried and cracked lips to perhaps call for someone to help her, but only a croak fell from her. In her attempt to make noise she realized her throat was hurting too. It was raw and sore, as if she swallowed acid, causing her to cough. Still, she pushed forward because she was certain someone would help her. The farther she moved to what she thought would be an exit, the darker and colder she began to feel. Her body filling with tension, as if something was there watching her.
Something felt... wrong.
Chills ran down her spine at the feeling and she shook.
Something was wrongwrongwrong!
Why couldn't she find anyone? Her eye's squinted in the now almost pitch back walkway, she hadn't even noticed it getting dark. Maybe she should have gone a different direction, the opposite way. She paused in her walking as she thought to herself that maybe she should turn around and go the opposite way, when a cold shiver ran down her back. Frowning, Namari froze in her steps as the apprehensive feeling only began to grow as well as something inside of her screaming to run.
runrunrun!
But why? Why did she need to run?
Something warm and wet dribbled onto her scabbed shoulder and Namari flinched at the feeling before wiping it off with her hand and bringing it to her face to look at. Some cloudy like substance, she squinted harder in the dark before hearing a low deep grumble behind her. Wide eyed at the loud sound, she turned around only to come face to face with a grotesque monstrosity. Her mouth dropped and she felt herself stumble back while the thing groaned and growled as it shifted closer to her, its size was massive compared to her. The beast was hideous, it had bulbous skin protruding unnaturally in random spots while a set of six spindly spider-like arms with six-inch claws dug into the sides of the walls to keep itself off of the ground, small pebbles of brick falling from where the claws penetrated the wall and cemented in place. It had thirteen eye's that squinted, then widened and rolled back as it took in a deep breath, most likely scenting her, while prune like lips opened to reveal hundreds of rows of sharp fangs in a wicked grin.
A rancid smell filled her nostrils, the scent of rot and decay.
Her chest began to heave as she struggled for air, feeling her heart dropping in terror, and her throat closed up as if refusing to let lose the scream that wanted to come out. Her eyes widened, head beginning to hurt as piercing sharp pains began to wrack her brain all over. Her ears only rand louder and louder. This thing... this thing was familiar. It was almost as if she had seen it before, but she couldn't recall. She couldn't remember anything before waking up in this alley way but, one thing she did know was that she needed to run.
Run...
RUN!
Namari let out a choked garbled scream, her throat finally letting it out, that ripped at her sore throat before turning her body and fleeing from the creature, a curse her mind supplied for her. She didn't know how she knew that, and she didn't understand how she knew what that was nor did she know how she knew that she would die from it! A curse? It was a monster far worse than any child's make-believe closet monster! Her feet hit the pavement as she ran, hearing a loud rumbling screech that shook the ground while she fled before hearing the curse begin its chase. The monster used the walls it had been anchored too, slamming each claw into the wall for assistance as it shot forward after her and paying no attention to the brick's that tumbled to the ground from its actions. Namari tried to ignore it, yelping as parts of metal fire escape pieces began to fall down from its chaotic pursuit. She dodged what she could, leapt over some, and continued to run as tears ran down her face.
She pushed her legs to go faster, heart hammering in her chest as her tiny legs screamed in protest. Adrenaline was starting to kick in and numb the pain she felt as she zigzagged her way down the alley to dodge falling debris and the beast's striking claws as the monster chased after her. This thing, her mind reeled, it had to have followed her. Confusion filled her, followed her? From where did it follow her? Namari stumbled as the alley opened up, falling over into a roll before making herself get up just in time to dodge a claw that slammed where her body used to be.
She let out a shriek that was answered by the things own horrible screech and she tumbled into what looked like an abandoned playground. She made her way to a dome like monkey bar contraption and just barely fit inside of it before the beast slammed into it, making her yell in fear again. It snarled and writhed in place in its fury before slamming against the playground contraption that surprisingly didn't break. It slammed into it over and over, grunting and howling with every hit. She tried to shove herself against the bars but found out that wasn't such a good idea as the beast tried to use its claw to get to her. So, she stayed in the middle and covered her head, pleading over and over for it to go away. Or for something to save her. She was so scared!
Go away, go away! Somebody... anybody! HELP! I-I'm going to die!
She sobbed as she curled in herself, trying to tune out the monster's noise, when a deep rumbling growl much different filled the air in answer. Namari then felt something scaley coil around herself, startling her but as whatever it was felt warm and oddly safe. It was oh so warm... When she opened her eyes, she gasped as a white serpent like dragon formed around her out of nowhere. It was massive and had broken her makeshift form of protection with ease and was now snarling at the monster in front of her. The dragon's white scales shimmered, golden predator eye's gleaming dangerously as long fangs snapped and gnashed threateningly at the beast. The monster that had been chasing her reared back with a hellish hiss in response before it then flew into the shadows, out of sight, as if it were afraid and knew it wouldn't stand a chance.
In absolute shock and awe, Namari stared up at the dragon, eye's wide as it turned and looked at her before giving a huff. Its snout was close to her as the golden eyes of the great creature roamed over her form. When her hand reached forward, shaking in apprehension, she barely managed a touch to the snout before the thing vanished into a puff of clouds as if never having been there in the first place.
Staring for a moment in disbelief, Namari stood shakily and wondered what the hell was going on, when movement caught her eyes. It was then that she took more notice of her surroundings and spotted people who were all staring at her from the distance. H-had they been there the whole time?
"D-Did you s-see?" Her voice croaked and she winced in pain. But the people only continued to stare. It wasn't the type of stare that one would give after seeing something horrifying like that monster, but the type that yelled that they just witnessed something inhumane.
The managed to move forward, trying to ignore the tremors in her body, as she made her way to someone. They had all wore ragged clothing way worse than hers, and their bodies were ten times filthier... Why hadn't they helped her? Did they really just stand there and watch her almost get killed? Were they scared of the dragon?
"W-where did the monster go?" She croaked again, noting how the people shuffled away from her. Some looked weirded out, some disgusted, some sneering. When she tried to tug on one mans tattered jacket, she found herself flung back as alcoholic breath filled her nose.
The man screamed at her in garbled words that were so slurred she couldn't understand them. She just knew they smelled horribly. A few people laughed at her, murmuring to themselves as if they were talking about her. Which she thinks they were because they stared right at her as they laughed. Did they not believe her? Did they seriously not see? The monster?
The Dragon?!
Movement in the shadow's caught her attention and she could see the eyes of the curse again, not daring to come out, leering at her as it watched her try to get someone to tell her what was going on only to be sneered at and looked at with annoyance. Some were even murmuring about her being insane while another couple laughed.
No one... no one believed her.
They were looking at her like she was insane!
Her eyes turned to look back to the monster who also seemed to be laughing at her and she grit her teeth angrily, standing up and glaring at the people who were mocking her. But, before she could utter a thing, a warm hand grasped onto her upper arm and suddenly began pulling her, dragging her along quickly. She yelled in response as she was forcefully dragged along, squirming and fighting to be released, when she noticed it looked like an older kid who was also covered head to toe in rags, hiding their identity. The kid said nothing at first until they were a safe distance away, and then they took their upper covering off to reveal a somewhat tanned thirteen-year-old boy with brown hair and eyes.
"Holy cow!" The boy yelled with a mischievous grin, baring a wide smile with missing teeth. "That was amazing!" He shouted with a Mexican accent. A foreigner, she assumed. "Did you summon that dragon? Is that your technique?"
"Y-you could s-see them?" She questioned. "T-technique?"
"Hm? Well yeah! Oh, right you probably are new around here huh? Well, those people? They can't see 'em. Their what we call normies."
"They can't? Normies?"
"Nope. To them curses don't even exist, even if one of them is touching them. See look over there." He pointed to an elderly woman who sat with a groan, not seeming to notice a monster wrapped around her legs that she rubbed at as if they hurt.
"Curses" That word was familiar.
Right, she thought to herself. Her brain literally supplied her with that name earlier, but she hadn't really focused on it.
"Yeah, only me and my brother could see them for the longest time but now I found someone else who can~" He gave another boyish grin as he cheered, as if the creature didn't scare him at all. "You an Orphan too, right? Those guys that you tried to tell were homeless people who've lived on the streets their WHOLE lives and never have they seen the curses around them. So, you know, of course they wouldn't believe you. You can't just go around talking about curses and not expect to be labeled crazy you know?"
".... Who are you??" She rasped out. "What IS all this?"
"Hm? Me?" He points to himself before blinking. "Oh! The names Miguel Juan Julio Puentes. You can call me Julio. What's your name?"
"Namari."
"Nice to meet you! So, like I said before, are you an orphan to? You also never answered about the freaking dragon!"
"Dunno..." She murmured. "Can't remember anything... and the dragon just showed up. I don't know how or where it went."
"Huh, maybe you JUST unlocked your powers. Thats ok! So did I! My brother can't use powers though, but he can still see curses. Oh! But don't get me wrong, he's still super powerful! He's like super strong and fast! Oh... wait so you don't remember a thing? Huh..." Julio frowned before looking around, trying to see if that curse was still lingering about, and when he didn't see it, he looked back to the girl before him. "Uh, listen so you can see curses like me and my brother can and we never thought we would ever find anyone like us! So... if you don't have anywhere to go then maybe you could come with me! My brother might be grouchy at first but he's a good guy! Once he knows that you can see them too, he won't be so uhm... rude."
"Rude? And I don't know you..."
"Ah, well yeah." Julio scratched the back of his neck, "You see we're both orphans too and since people think we're crazy, no one wants us around! So, he's not the nicest guy at first. Come on! I also don't feel right leaving a little kid here alone, lost and confused. Also, do you WANT to stay here with that thing?"
"I'm five... and no..."
"... really? You seem younger. But anyway, I thought not. Alright! Let's go!"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~Rebirth~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Antonio Rodrigez Puentes had no idea that when his brother went out to get them some food, he'd return with a literal kid. So, imagine his surprise when Julio barges into their hideaway with a blank faced black haired little girl that stared at him with creepily absent brown eyes. Imagine his surprise when his brother stated that he was keeping her.
"... Say again?" He hissed through grit teeth. Honestly! They had enough trouble with just them! Why the heck would he bring a kid?!
"No way!"
"But Tony! She can see them too!"
"I said no." He growled.
"Why not?" Julio was now pouting, arm's folded as he glared to the side while the girl looked at them back and forth, blinking every so often.
"We have enough problems as it is. I don't need a snot nosed kid to look after and feed on top of everything! Why the hell did you bring her?"
"I told you! She sees them too!"
"She could be faking."
"No way I watched her way before she noticed me. She definitely can see them; it chased her down the alley and into the park but didn't come out. Kinda like it was staying out of sight, but I don't know why. Meh, whatever. Come on brother! I wanna keep her! I'll watch over her-"
"Shes not a pet Julio!"
"-feed her and take her potty and cloth her and keep her safe-"
"WE SERIOUSLY CAN'T AFFORD TO-"
"-look after her and teach her to pick pocket and steal only what she needs to survive and oh! I'll even train her to kill those curses! I'll be her very own Sensei~"
"I-you-what?!"
"Come on Tony." Julio stopped his antics for a moment, getting serious suddenly while glancing over to the five-year-old kid he picked up who was watching the two of them as if it were Saturday morning cartoons. "She's wounded, scared and all alone like we are."
"I-"
"She doesn't have anyone."
"..."
"It'll all work out brother... I just feel like leaving her isn't a good idea. Call it a gut feeling if you will, but something is just telling me to take her in and teach her."
"Ugh, fine! Whatever, do what you want! But she better not get in my way." Tony always did have a hard time denying his brother, plus he was kind of curious. No one has ever seen curses like them before.
"Thanks Tony!" Julio cooed.
Namari blinked as she watched the two bicker back and forth before Tony, who was an exact replica of his brother, glared at her and stormed off. He had been introduced to her as Antonio Rodrigez Puentes. She frowned, looking away as she felt a little disheartened, but she could understand. If what Julio said was true, that they were orphans and homeless too, then taking in and teaching someone would be aggravating and time consuming. If it had been her in his place, then she wouldn't have been very happy either.
After agreeing to go with Julio back in that creepy place, having nowhere else to go and being too afraid to run into that curse again, Namari had followed him for what felt like hours. Though, to be honest, it probably wasn't really hours that they traveled. She was tired and injured after all, not to mention hello? She's like five and could barely keep up with some of the stuff Julio spouted as they walked. Something about how his brother was going to be hard to get along with at first but deep down he was a good person. She had no complaints to give, Julio was likely saving her from some cruel fate that could befall her on the streets.
Her mind gave another piercing stab as information ran into her head, how being alone on the streets as a defenseless little girl could attract the wrong crowed. How she could be kidnapped, sold as a slave, or even worse. Or maybe even that curse would come after her and she would end up its dinner. Who knows what, just that it was better for her to follow this teenager then to stay where she was. Julio had ended up leading her into what looked like an abandoned warehouse that was littered with junk, but not the garbage kind. It looked like the two had been living there for a long time and had two beds, cloths strung around, a dirty beat-up couch, a refrigerator, backpacks, some makeshift table with cards littered around it, cigarette butts, a lighter, some sort of weapon box, a boombox, and a few containers of who knows what. There was a lot more, but she was having trouble focusing.
Once Tony gave the okay for her to stay, or really the 'whatever', Julio told her to stay put as he ran off to prepare a spot for her to stay the night and was blabbering on and on about how he needed to start teaching her ASAP and show her the ropes. She could hear him in the distance as he babbled on and on about finding a private spot because she was a girl, and girls needed privacy. She somewhat began to tune him out though as her eye's drooped from being tired. She even started to fade in and out of consciousness until her world tilted, and she found herself falling.
Arm's wrapping around her had startled her into awareness and she found herself staring up at a serious face, Tony she thinks.
"Geese, watch what you're doing why don't you?" He grumbled at her before scowling once she was righted. His eye's roamed over her form and what he saw just made his scowl worsen. "You really are pretty wounded, what the hell happened to you anyway? Not like I care, really, but I don't need you slowing me and my brother down. I seriously don't get why he had to bring you. You're just going to be in the way." He grumbled before muttering "Nuisance."
"Don't remember..." She muttered, ignoring his muttering, blinking slowly as she tried to get the tiredness to leave her system. "Woke in the alley... monster followed me everywhere. Always watching." She didn't even realize she said the last part as she wavered again.
"Hey! Stay awake! You've got a nasty head injury, and I don't need you dying in your sleep from a concision. We don't want to have to hide a body again." He barked at her as he dragged her to a chair. "Didn't even dress your wounds, you're useless. How the hell do you expect to survive out here, forgetting basic crap like that?"
His words and voice sounded really harsh, but as she looked into his eyes it didn't really look like he meant them cruelly. It still wasn't warm though, kind of closed off and mistrustful. He cared but he didn't care.
Hrmm..
Maybe he was a Tsundere?
... what was a Tsundere and how did she know that word? Her eyebrows furrowed, catching his attention.
"What's with the expression brat?!"
"Tsundere."
"..."
"..."
"pfft~" Julio, who had just rejoined them, bust out laughing so hard he fell over while his brother turned a deep dark red.
"HAH?! TSUNDERE?! HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT WORD?! YOU'RE LIKE TWO!"
"I'm five..."
"Oh man that's golden!" Julio cracked up even more, holding his stomach as his eyes watered.
After a while of arguing, Tony yelling at Julio who wouldn't stop calling him Tsundere, the two brothers managed to get Namari's wounds looked at and cleaned. They then had managed to get her into cleaner cloths for the night before finding a spot for her to sleep in. When she settled into bed, her mind becoming fuzzy as she drifted in and out of consciousness, Tony's face appeared above her spot, which happened to be on a rather high platform. His face was once again hard and serious as he glared her down, arms folded.
"Hnn?"
"Listen kid, I don't know where you came from or who you were. I don't know what you're after but if you are to stay here then you need to know a few things. Firstly, understand your place. My brother and I have been here since we were six, don't think you can take over anything! If you want something you have to earn it yourself. Second thing, nothing in this world is free, understand? Nothing. You want to eat? Learn how to make money or how to steal it without being caught. You want some cloths? Same thing applies." He started. "If you get caught then you are on your own! I won't let my brother risk himself for some stranger he picked up off the road."
"Oi! Stop nagging her Tony!" Julio hollered from somewhere in the room.
"You will do well to learn how to survive because I refuse to baby you!" Tony ignored his twin, "Thirdly, the streets aren't for the lighthearted. The weak always die out here so do yourself a favor and train hard. Its dog eat dog and only the strong survive. You want to live? Then be strong, got it? We won't be around forever, hell I don't know if you'll even stick around. It won't matter to me anyway; all I care about is Julio. Most likely you'll die in a day or so. I don't get why Julio wants to deal with the headache again-"
Namari furrowed her eyebrows at him, while his voice and words didn't sound very nice to her, she could understand in a way. If the two of them had to survive out here for so long, and all they had was each other...
"-n't mention curses to people. All that gets you is labeled as a crazy person! If you're labeled as a crazy person, then no one will ever want you around."
It was starting to form in her head, a reason why he seemed like he was. Not only to have lived on the streets for so long enduring who knows what but seeing curses and telling people labeled you as different in a bad way. Julio said they were orphans and on the way to the warehouse he mentioned something about an orphanage. She really wasn't paying any attention to what he was saying anymore, her mind whirling with many thoughts. Thoughts that felt weird to think at five. This was her new life now, she supposed. She would have to learn from these two brothers and do exactly what they taught her if she wanted to survive. Julio seemed nice, kind of really dramatic, but nice. Tony however, seemed closed off and cold but deep down had a sliver of care. She didn't think he wanted anything bad to happen to her, but his main concern was his twin brother who'd been by his side since they were born. So if something were to happen to her, Julio would be top priority.
Julio was probably the only person in the world who understood exactly what Tony went through, and Tony was probably the only person in the world who understood exactly what Julio went through. Whatever it was, seemed to traumatize Tony into a deep seeded fear of losing Julio. Her heart clenched, she wished she had a sibling who loved her like that. Maybe she did, if she could remember anything before the alley. Or maybe she really was an orphan? Maybe she was abandoned on the streets? But she didn't know why she had no memory.
Tony was still blabbering on and on in his harsh tone and glare and she felt herself smile warmly at him as she thought more and more of how he cared about his brother. The smile made Tony halt in what he was saying and stare at her. It was the first expression she really had since his brother introduced her. The kid had just stood there blank faced, emotionless really.
She was kind of adorable when she smiled.
"Thank you, Tony." She murmured in a whisper, her eye's closing into an eye smile as well.
"I-... You-"He spluttered before blinking and then glared to the side with red cheeks. "OI! Julio! I've decided something!"
"Hm?" Tony's voice echoes from the distance.
"Since the brat is going to stay, no matter how temporary, I've decided that I'm going to be her Sensei. You'd probably get her killed if you taught her anything." Tony said with no emotion, nonchalant almost like commenting on the weather.
"HAH?! No! I'm the Sensei!"
"I'm older! I'll be teaching her."
"You're only older by like 5 minutes! Also, I found her first!"
"Huh? Who says?"
"Our mother duh." Julio was now suddenly close by and was presenting a cardboard cutout of Shakira Ripoll.
"... SHAKIRA IS NOT OUR MOTHER YOU OBSESSED FANBOY IDIOT!"
"I wish she was though." Julio sighed dreamily. "I'd love to call her Mami~"
"YOU'RE DISGUSTING! THERE IS A LITERALL KID RIGHT HERE!" Steam was coming out of Tony's ear's as he glowered at his brother. "This is a perfect example of you being a terrible teacher!" He turned to the five-year-old with determination. "OI! NAMARI! DON'T LISTEN TO A WORD HE SAYS, OKAY?!"
Namari wasn't really paying attention to either of them honestly, the day's events were hitting her and she found herself falling into a deep sleep. Her mind filling with images of a grown woman, gunshots, screams, and fire as she slipped into the realm of dreams. The five-year-old was oblivious to the arguing thirteen-year-old boys as she dreamt on, deep asleep and silent to the world.
Namari would survive, she would learn from this world and navigate it as best as she could.
She needs to get stronger, fight curses, and wait. Wait till she is older. Wait until 'they' find her.
She had no idea who 'they' were though...
"Fine!" Tony shouts, not knowing Namari hadn't even heard a single thing they argued about. "I'll be her senior!"
"... whatever, I'm going to bed. Also, she's asleep, stupid."
"NAMARI! YOU WILL NOW CALL ME SENPAI~"
