"Daddy I miss mom" Aaliyah frowned as her and Dalton sat in the living room watching The Grinch. Aaliyah's favorite Christmas movie. She wanted to wait until her mother got home but Ariana insisted that they go ahead without her. "Me too princess. She really wants to be here. She's trying"

"If she's trying, then why isn't she here?"

6 hours earlier

"Daddy! Your phone is ringing" Aaliyah yelled running over to her fathers phone. "It's mommy! Come on"

"I'm coming, I'm coming" Dalton shouted rushing over and answering the FaceTime call. "MOMMY" Aaliyah screamed the second Ariana's face appeared. "Hi baby I miss you" Ariana said blowing Aaliyah a kiss.

"I miss you too, when are you gonna get here? Christmas is tomorrow!"

Ariana sighed bouncing her leg up and down and stiffly shook her head. "Babe, is everything okay?" Dalton asked concerned at her sudden change in mood. "I'm fine, it's just I'm in LA and you guys are in New York-it's snowing there you know that right? Like a lot"

"Yes mommy, that's why you need to hurry up and get here. So we can go play!" Ariana looked into the camera, a sad look in her eyes "Bubs I don't think mommy's going to be able to make it there in time. It's getting really bad, the airport has blocked all flights to New York until tomorrow. I'm stuck at the airport right now." Ariana turned her camera around to show how crowded it was. Dalton moved Aaliyah onto his lap so he could get a better view of the phone screen. "Ariana- how long have you been there?"

"Around a good five hours. I didn't want to say anything because I didn't want to worry you."

"Ari I could've-"

"No Dalton you can't get me out of this one. It's my fault. You told me to come home early, I stayed. Aaliyah I promise I'm doing my ultimate best to get there-"

"So your not going to be home in time for Christmas mommy?" Aaliyah said playing with her fingers, her voice trembling. "Babygirl...tomorrow when you wake up, I'll be there." "Ariana" Dalton started not wanting her to make promises that she knew she couldn't keep. "I'll be there okay. You and daddy watch some movies tonight for me, I'll call if I get any updates."

Present

Dalton sighed, "I told her not to say that...do you want anything" He asks trying to take her mind off of it. "Cookies and milk please" Aaliyah smiled pulling a blanket around her arms. "Coming right up" He stood up going into the kitchen preparing what Aaliyah had requested.

"Do you want the ones that we made earlier today?"

"No I'm saving those for mommy" Dalton nodded in agreement, every year the two always made cookies together. Aaliyah's always came out, quite un-edible so in the end everyone just ended up eating the ones that Ariana had made. Aaliyah didn't mind because Ariana always made sure to eat at least 1 of her cookies, good or not.

"Daddy"

"Yes princess" Dalton sat the plate down on the coffee table and moved it closer to couch. "Is it illegal to hold people hostage at the airport?" She asked, Dalton gave her a confused look. "I'm not sure about that princess"

Aaliyah leaned her head on his shoulder and later ended up falling asleep. It was about time, the clock read 11:15 and now Dalton had to somehow figure out how he was going to get all of his daughters gifts ready in time for tomorrow. Him and Ariana always got it down by at least 1 am, but now that it was just him, he had a lot to do. He went into the hall closet taking out multiple boxes of toys, gift bags, wrapping paper. Most of the gifts were already wrapped, he had given himself a break expecting that Ariana would be back to help. He had gotten thirty minutes in when his phone started to move across the table. After seeing that it was Ariana he quickly answered it.

"Hey baby how's it going?"

"Cold is how it's going" Before he could respond he heard the front door open, jumping thinking it was an intruder, but when he heard Ariana's laugh he ran over to go meet her. "Hey" Ariana smiled as Dalton engulfed her in a hug slowly rocking back and forth. "I didn't think you'd make it"

"I promised. I can't let my family spend the holidays without me" Ariana let go looking around the space. "Where is she?"

"She fell asleep, I put her to bed awhile ago."

"Good. I still have to finish my half of the gifts" Ariana said taking off her coat. "Oh no you don't have to that. It's late I'm sure your tired."

"No I need to." The girl sat down on the floor measuring out the bows, stopping when Dalton sat down on the couch near her. "You can go to bed if you want babe"

"It's okay, surprisingly Aaliyah let me sleep in this morning so I think-"

"She did? Wow. 7 years and she's never let me sleep in. "Mommy I'm hungry"" Ariana imitated her daughters voice making the both of them laugh.

"I thought the flights were blocked, how'd you get here"

"Your lovely girl has superpowers. She can get anywhere" Ariana joked and pushed a present under the tree. "Does she..." Dalton gave Ariana a grin causing her to shake her head. "Aaliyah's asleep I don't wanna wake her come on"

I walked into Aaliyah's room and was quite shocked to find her fast asleep. Normally she'd be up pouncing me and Dalton screaming for us to wake up. You know because; "sleep is boring"

"Aaliyahhhh, babygirl" I sang turning on the light in the room. She groaned covering her eyes. "Daddy it's too bright-" She froze for a second at the sound of my voice. I knelt down next to her bed and whispered, "Surprise" Her eyes opened adjusting to the light her face lighting up when she saw me. She gasped, "Mommy!" She yelled practically tackling me.

"Merry Christmas bubbly" I laughed climbing onto the bed with her. "You made it. Just like you promised" I nodded, giving her a hug. "Yes just like I promised. Now come on daddy's waiting we must go open presents right?"

She threw her hands in the air, "Yay let's go"

We arrived downstairs and Dalton handed me a cup of coffee while Aaliyah ran over to the tree looking at all of the gifts. "Do you see one you wanna open first bubs?" I asked as me and Dalton sat down. "This one" She said pointing to a wrapped box. Me and Dalton smiled at each other knowing what it was. "I think your gonna really like this one Aaliyah" Dalton says helping her unwrap it. "Oh my gosh! A new iPad! You guys said you weren't buying me another one" 4 months ago Aaliyah completely broke her new iPad that I had just got her, screen cracked and all. Both me and Dalton had told her numerous times that she had to keep the case on and well, she didn't listen and dropped it from a good 9 feet. We agreed on not buying her a new one immediately because if we did then she wouldn't learn her lesson.

"Your gonna put the case on it this time right? Second chance"

"You see we had it specially made. Your name is on the back" Aaliyah took it out of the box and her eyes widened. "Thank you" She said running over and hugging the two of us.

"You enjoy it. Oh and actually...I have another surprise. You said you wanted to go and play in the snow right?"

"And that's...that's how you make a snow angel" I said in between breaths and stood up. "Hey come here I wanna take a picture-"

Suddenly I felt something hit me in the back of my head causing me to turn around. "AALIYAH ONE! MOMMY ZERO" Aaliyah shouted throwing another snowball at me but I dodged it.

"Oh so you wanna play like that?"

Aaliyah nodded a mischievous smile across her face. I scooped some snow in my hands throwing it at her. "1 point" We ran around chasing after each other. "Mommy stop I can't breathe" Aaliyah laughed resting her hands on her knees. "Put your hood on child" I came up behind her jumping on her back taking us both to the ground, Aaliyah letting out a scream.

"I love you" I say kissing her head then laying on my back. "As do I."

"I've only left for 5 minutes and you two are already going at it huh" Dalton said leaning over us. "Hey baby" I yanked him down with us. "Can we spend every Christmas like this?"

"As long as we're together. That's all that matters."
