Three
Rye
I stand frozen on the steps, staring in absolute disbelief as the car drives away.
What was that? Who was that?
Well, I know who it was. But how?
I cannot make sense of anything that just happened, yet I cannot deny it.
That was him. Without a doubt. That was my moon destined mate.
And yep... my moon destined mate is a jerk. Worse than that. He is a coward. A preppy, jerk coward.
Awesome.
My brothers will never let me live this down. Ever. I can just hear them now;
"Rye's mate is a little human bitch."
Ahhh. Fucking great. I need to work out what just happened before anyone figures this out and tells them. Or tells dad. I just know if Ethan gets word of this, he will run straight to my dad. Betas little kiss ass son, always trying to undermine me.
I get it. Im the only daughter of the Alpha. Three sons and one daughter, I'm out numbered and I'm the baby. I'm a commodity in the world of wannabe kiss ass males in my pack. Ethan, like some others, thinks he can upgrade in the pack world if he is with me. Since my grandfather, the Grand Alpha, changed the rules of hierarchy, any of the direct Alpha heirs can challenge for Alpha when my father steps down. Lucky me, now potential suitors are popping up everywhere.
We believe in mates of course, my mother and father are moon- destined, but we also believe in survival of the strongest. I just know Ethan and maybe others, will challenge my mate for my hand.
And like this.... they would win.
Not a fucking chance. I want to have the last word in all of this. And I will.
I take a deep breath and head back into the school entrance. My school, for now. I still can't believe they made us come here. Assimilation. That's what dad called it. A time for wolf and human kids to mix. For us to learn how to blend in. To respect them. To understand them.
To pity them more like it. Tv
All the packs do this, every few years. It's to keep peace with the familiars and prove we are still living in conjunction with the laws set out by the original packs and founding familiars. In the strictest of consideration for them of course. There are very stringent rules.
Three months we have to live here. I don't even know how my father talked me into this. I know he is testing me. Testing my obedience, and more likely my will. We can't even shift on sight. Rule one, and the biggest one; keep our secret. We have to leave the grounds under the guise of team sport training and go to the mountain range to shift and hunt.
It's like being in prison. It is a relative prison of sorts for my wolf. We are surrounded by inferiors who have no clue they just invited a bunch of teen werewolves into their lives. Morons.
Guess that's why I'm here.
And to prove dad wrong. I am leadership material. I am. I just don't have the best track record with humans. They seem.....stupid. Obsessed with themselves even, and tiny, insignificant details of their lives rule them. Ahhh. I'm so over them already. Dad says I need to get to know them before judging so harshly.
Not much to judge on so far.
The last thing I expected was to meet him here. I just don't need this. And to make things worse, something is up with him. It's like, he doesn't know what he is. He is a familiar for sure, or maybe half and half ? The things he said to me were fucking brutal, but they just proved that he knows what we are.
I can smell that he is at least part wolf though. Maybe it's dilute in his genetics? It's just...not quite right. His wolf is off somehow. Distant. My wolf called to his but there was no response.
I slink back into the halls of the stuffy school and try to get back into class undetected. The last thing I need during our check in tonight is someone telling dad that I went awol already.
As I round the last corner before I make it back unscathed and unnoticed, I smell trouble before I see it. Or rather, him.
"How kind of you to wait and check up on me Ethan." I spit out as I edge slowly past the last bend and see him leaning against the lockers.
Prick.
It's not that he is hard to look at. It's quite the opposite actually. Long tan limbs, filled out in all the right places. If he wasn't such an ass I would totally go there, but he is. So I won't. Ever.
Especially now I have found him.
"Just wanted to make sure you were safe Rye." He says with a sickly drawl.
"Yeah right. Spying more like it." I spit, I hate him with a capital H.
"Watching you, yes. I love to watch you. Spying? No. I promised Alpha I would take care of you and I intend on keeping that promise." He says, smiling so wide his dimples are clear as day.
Yuck. The other she wolves might eat this up but it just makes my skin crawl.
"I don't think my father can feel your lips on his ass from here Ethan so cut the shit. I don't need your help." And with that, I spin and re enter our class, shooting a glare over at Lila and Kel who are both staring at me with raised brows and expressions of wonder and confusion.
I mouth the word "later" and they nod. I can't link them because everyone will hear. That's the last thing i want or need.
Ethan returns to class a second later and the teacher just smiles and nods and returns to the boring notes on the board at the front of the room.
"What did I miss?" I link to my pack class mates.
"Nothing at all. Just boring human shit. Though I did pick up some rapid heart rates when you re entered, check out your six." Kel links and I hear a few low chuckles as I turn to face the two lumber jack looking dudes sat behind me.
One shoots me a wink and I just frown and shake my head, earning more stifled laughs from the pack and some death stares from the human girls.
Calm down ladies.
Literally no shot in hell that I would ever go there.... never.
I have one, well two missions now and that is to figure out what is up with my mate and then get back to the original master plan..... becoming our packs first female Alpha by the time I'm 18.
Sure, it's novel and barely heard of. But it's not impossible.
I know my brothers are the likely choice. But they are all lacking something that makes them the best choice overall.
Roxx is the eldest and the strongest fighter but he doesn't have the brains for strategy or running the pack that Rads has and while Roux has neither brains nor braun, he has the heart of a lion and has the love and respect of all the pack, especially my father.
They are tough to beat.
But not impossible. I beat them all at skills training and I'm top of our class in GPA. I do lack the love of the pack though, I'm called head strong and stubborn a lot. Even more so as an un mated she wolf, some tradition never dies. But with a moon destined at my side? Game changer. None of the boys have met their moon destined or chosen a mate at all, not yet.
I just have to figure out what the hell happened to mine and see if we can work it out. The moon paired us for a reason right? Just have to get to the bottom of it. And fast.
