3. night
Rebecca thinks she can just call shotgun and that's that- she's right, of course, but it still hurts my ego a little bit, being the older brother and all.
We're leaving the cabin tonight and, yes, Rebecca's actually sitting in the front. After a lazy day today, and a somewhat nerve-racking one in the woods yesterday, I don't necessarily mind her bold actions. I'd much rather sit alone in the backseat with Steve anyway.
It had to be close to 8:00pm by the time we started loading the car, seeing as we had to have dinner and clean up and such beforehand. Either way, it was beginning to get kind of dark out, and that's how I realized I could finally muster up the courage to do something.
Dad put Rebecca in the front seat, as she requested, and he, then, got into the driver's side of his Buick as Steve and I got in, too.
An hour had gone by of dad listening to the same old station on the radio and Rebecca quietly snoring in the front seat, but at least now it was fully pitch-black outside the four windows and I couldn't see a thing around me.
I exhaled to myself and summoned my inner strength to actually do something. Actually, finally, do something worthwhile. As he'd been seated directly to my right, even as there'd been a bigger, empty seat farther to the right, I found this even easier.
I touched the side of his leg to gently let him know I was there. I heard his hair move slightly as he came to attention of what was happening. Surely, he thought nothing of it, but I wasn't finished yet.
I let my fingers sprawl out and linger high on his thigh and, before he knew what I was really intending, I had a hand atop his thigh and my fingers stuck between his legs. His breathing hitched and I felt him looking at me, even through the darkness.
It was almost as if, tomorrow, in the light of day, this moment would dissolve entirely into the midst of night and become nothing that either of us would dare mention or hint upon remembering. As if a moment such as this that occurred enveloped in secrecy could only be recalled in an identical, impossible to recreate unless you'd been there in the beginning, sort of space.
I grabbed a little tighter around his leg and he exhaled, placing his cold hands on top of mine. It was like they were there to tell me to stop, but also to encourage me to keep going. God, how I wanted to keep going.
But, no, I wanted to see his reaction when I did this in daylight. Now? This time? It was a test run. He's responding, and that means I'll do it again when he least expects it.
I turned my hand around and grabbed his hand in my palm, momentarily playing with his fingers and then pulling back and looking out the window and away from him.
Even though I couldn't see him, I didn't want him getting that all-knowing sensation that I was staring. I couldn't give myself away just yet...
After all, this was just the beginning.
