His Broken Smile (10)
Link continued to lie on top of one of the two beds in the room, lost in his own thoughts. He was trying to figure out what to do next, like how he would figure out a puzzle in a temple.
But nothing came to his mind.
He sighed quietly and immediately got up.
What am I doing? I need to stop the moon from falling!
He exited out of his room and left the inn through the roof door. Upon leaving the inn, he immediately went to the Laundry Pool. He didn't know why his mind directed back to Kafei once again, despite the fact that he did tell him to leave him alone. Perhaps it's because he was really worried about him. Kafei blamed himself for what they did last night.
To Link, it wasn't even Kafei's fault!
But apparently Kafei thought otherwise.
Link looked at the door of Kafei's hiding spot. He sighed quietly before walking away.
......................
"Ah, so the hero finally found love at last."
"Although he hesitates and so does the one he loves. Kafei, isn't it?" The voice snapped its fingers. "Arise!"
Kafei then stood up with red emotionless eyes.
"Wow, he really can obey. Very good." Kafei was just standing, motionless. "Now, Kafei...tell me. Why do you hesitate? You and the hero hesitate. Tell me why. Is it because of Anju? Is it because of her?" The voice was giggling as it asked those questions to Kafei.
Kafei didn't respond. Although, there was tears falling down his face.
"Oh, so it is. Lovely, very interesting." The voice said as it laughed. "But how would Anju feel if she found out that you slept with the hero? Oh, how heartbroken she would feel!" Kafei didn't respond but just stared with his emotionless eyes at the ground.
"Heehee. I will let you go for now, I will keep observing your actions. Remember to follow any command I give you, Kafei!"
Kafei nodded silently.
......................
Link arrived to the swamp. He knew that he should help the Dekus first. However, when he arrived, his thoughts lingered to Kafei once more. He couldn't help but worry for him, he was concerned for him. It felt like without Kafei, he would simply just be worried. He stopped in his tracks as he looked at the ground, lost in his own thoughts.
He went silent.
It was silent.
Silent.
Silent.
Then, a whimper.
Tears began to fill the hero's blue eyes. Kafei reminded him of himself, sort of. Just like Kafei, he went through a childhood, but it was cut short when he time traveled to seven years later when he pulled that Master Sword. He lost seven years of his life because of his destiny, a destiny that he hated deeply with his disheartened heart. There was nothing he could do to regain those seven years back.
Therefore, even though he looked like a child, he was older than a child.
And when Zelda sent him back...how could she?
How could she think that going back home will help him be normal again? No, it never helped him and Link knew it.
His heart felt like it was turning, and not in a good way. His chest began to hurt as all of his emotions began to run through him. Tears kept filling his eyes as they fell down his face. Sobs began to escape his lips as he fell on his knees. His sobs were starting to become uncontrollable. He needed to talk to someone and he knew it.
An image of Kafei appeared before his eyes. He...he could talk to Kafei. But...what would that solve?
Damn it all. I might as well.
Link pulled out the ocarina and played the Song of Soaring. And with that, the sound of wings were heard throughout the swamp.
Kafei was sitting on the bed in his secret hiding place in the Laundry Pool, clutching onto his head. He didn't know what happened but he was having a terrible case of headaches.
"Ow...who was that voice? It sounded..."
He couldn't think straight as his head kept hurting. Suddenly, he heard pounding on his door. It gave him quite the scare as the sound echoes off the walls. He walked to the door slowly and pressed his ear against it. He heard crying and it sound familiar too.
"Kafei...open the door, please..."
That voice! It was Link.
Kafei sighed quietly as the regret was coming back to him almost immediately. "Link...I told you that I wanted to be alone." He replied through the door as he fought the urge off to start crying. He heard a soft sob escape the hero's lips through the door. "Kafei, please...I need to talk to you...just open the door, please..."
"After that, you can hate me and tell me to leave all you want...just let me talk to you...please."
A tear slid down Kafei's face. He really wanted to be alone, but he wanted to see the hero's face. He looked at the door and he sighed before unlocking it. The second he opened the door, he felt a warmth around his waist as well as a pair of arms.
Link was hugging him.
He also heard Link crying as well. Kafei was taken aback by this but he didn't object to it. He gently hugged Link back as he closed the door. Link continued to cry into his chest as both of them walked up to Kafei's bed.
"Shhh, it's okay... let's get you cleaned up." Kafei whispered softly as he reached into a small box and pulled out some tissues to give to Link. Link gladly took the tissues as he dried his eyes and his face. "Now, what did you want to talk about?" Kafei asked to the green clothed hero.
Link nodded slowly. "Well, um..." He started as he did his best to figure out the right words. "I just...I just want to let you know that...t-that..." He trailed off again as he did his best not to cry again.
"T-That it's not your fault what happened..."
Oh. So it was about that.
"Link, I told you before that it's my fault. You can tell me several times that it's not my fault when it is." Link clutched onto his tunic skirt tightly. "Kafei, please don't blame yourself-"
"Link, stop."
"No, Kafei. You need to stop blaming yourself!" Link yelled as tears were refilling his eyes.
"Link, will you stop saying it's not my fault?!" Kafei argued back. "I knew that I shouldn't have done that to you, especially the fact that I'm fucking engaged!" Link clutched onto his tunic skirt tighter.
"Kafei, l-"
"And that I know that I shouldn't have done that to you, a child no le-"
Link snapped.
"KAFEI, I AM NOT A FUCKING CHILD! STOP BLAMING YOURSELF, YOU STUBBORN JACKASS! SHUT YOUR STUBBORN MOUTH SO I CAN TALK!"
Kafei was taken aback by Link's yelling. He never heard Link yell and swear like that before. Link immediately covered his mouth with his hands upon realizing what he said. He yelled at Kafei.
I yelled at Kafei. What have I done?
Kafei was still silent as he was still taken aback but he wanted Link to say what he wanted. Link removed his hands from his mouth. He knew that Kafei was signalling to him that he should talk right now.
"Look, I'm...I'm not really a child. I may look like one, but...I'm not a child." Link did his best to explain, but he knew that Kafei would most likely not understand, which would be understandable to him. It would be confusing as hell. Link scooted closer to Kafei as he rested his head on the purple haired man's chest. Kafei didn't object to this, although it made him flinch a little.
"You see, I was a child, I was. I was a child living in the Kokiri forest. However, one day, I was sent to see the Great Deku Tree as he was in danger. I defeated what was causing harm to him, but it was too late. I received the Kokiri's Emerald from him. It was the start of my adventure to Hyrule."
"I traveled to Hyrule and met Zelda, princess of Hyrule. She told me about an evil man named Ganondorf, who wanted to rule over Hyrule...no, the world. She told me to get the other two Spiritual Stones and I did. The Goron's Ruby and the Zora's Sapphire. However, by the time I got it...Zelda had to flee Hyrule."
"I went to the Temple of Time and pulled out the Master Sword. Because I was too young to wield it, I was put to sleep for seven years."
He saw Kafei's red eyes widen.
"Seven...years?" Kafei asked and Link nodded.
"Yes, seven years. I was released from my sleep after those seven years to save Hyrule and the world. But despite that, Zelda sent me back home...she said to regain my lost time but...but..." Kafei saw tears appearing in Link's eyes. He saw Link grit his teeth. The next thing he knew, a chair crashed to the ground as Link kicked it down with an agonizing yell.
"Link!" Kafei called out, but he heard harsh sobs from the hero.
"H-How could I regain my lost time?!" Link said through his sobbing. "I lost seven years of my life! I didn't ask for any of this! I just wanted to live my life! I just...I just...!" Link collapsed to the ground on his knees as he began sobbing harshly. Kafei knelt down next to him as he pulled the green clothed hero into his arms, feeling Link's hand clutch onto his chest. Kafei knew that Link needed to let it all out.
"Shh, it's okay...let it all out." Kafei whispered gently as Link continued crying. He ruffled Link's blond hair gently, which the hero didn't mind, he desperately wanted to feel Kafei's comfort. After a while, Link stopped crying and look into Kafei's red eyes with his blue eyes that were red from crying.
"I'm not a child...not anymore." Link said, his voice sounding a bit raspy from his crying. "So when you go to blame yourself...it hurts."
Kafei made a sad frown. He wanted to tell the hero that it was his fault that he messed up his already ruined Innocence but he knew that the hero would argue back. "I'm...I'm sorry..." Kafei said softly. "You...you shouldn't have gone through that at all. You were just a child, who was pushed into so much that a child cannot handle...and now..."
"I'm so sorry." Kafei said as he held Link close to him, the hero hugging him back tightly. They stayed like this, feeling each other's warmth from the hug. After a while, Kafei stood up with Link following behind him. "Come on. Let's get you cleaned up," Kafei said with a soft smile.
"After that, you can get some rest." Link nodded but he studied Kafei's smile.
It looked so forced, so pained. Was Kafei hiding something? He couldn't tell.
"Yeah...sure." Link mumbled back quietly. Once they cleaned Link's face, Kafei carried him to his bed. "Are you sure you don't mind me sleeping on your bed?" Link asked and Kafei nodded. "I don't mind. After what happened, I think some rest will be good for you." Link was surprised but he nodded quietly.
"Thanks for listening to me, Kafei..." Link said with a smile, and Kafei smiled back gently, although his smile had a sad undertone to it. "No problem...I'm so sorry you went through that horrible mess..." Kafei said but then he saw Link's eyes were starting to close as the hero was entering sleep. Kafei sighed quietly as he pulled some blankets on the hero, suddenly he felt Link's hand clutch onto his sleeve.
"Stay..." He mumbled.
Kafei blushed a little. "O-Okay..." He laid next to him as he held the hero close to his chest with his arms. The hero looked so peaceful in his sleep.
"You look so peaceful..." Kafei mumbled. "How could such a innocent soul like you go through a catastrophe that caused harm on your innocence?" Tears were filling his red eyes. He began to silently sob as he held the hero even close.
