Part 48: Lying Eyes
At first Elena thought the young count just bore an uncanny resemblance to her late sister....
But now the more she looked, the more resemblances she began to see and the more she felt uneasy about him.
When she looked into his eyes it was like looking in a mirror, the same stormy dark brown ones seemed to blink back, despite the facial difference.
She hasn't really began paying attention to him until the royal couple had placed above her in the last round. Elena didn't like to lose. She NEVER lost. As soon as the initial shock wore off, Elena's brain began to compute again the calculative manor that she had been taught.
So, our little nephew, Toxic is tailing us? She thought to herself. It was shocking, but not unbelievable.
As good a disguise he was projecting, but the eyes, it couldn't disguise those unmistakable eyes.
It was like looking into a mirror.
The lady spy’s mouth contorted into a wicked grin and she felt a tiny burst of pride at the fact that the boy hasn't just simply accepted defeat like so many others would have, it had to be genetic. But if he got in the way, their well-calculated plans could be intruded on, and that wasn’t a good thing. Retaliation from the boy was not something she had calculated on. True; the Petrescu twins had purposely wrecked his career, but he, like Captain Galaxy's daughter, was merely a pawn in a much larger, master plan.
The previous year, a Russian farmer was plowing up a field on a piece of land he had just purchased, when the man had uncovered a tiny piece of a meteorite. Not just any meteorite, it was a fragment of the famous meteor that had empowered the world's most famous arch rivals. The fragment must have broken off upon entry to earth's atmosphere. The military quickly seized it, hoping to create the perfect solider. The meteorite fragment had been buried in the earth for over 2 decades. Tests on humans failed, bodies rejecting the radiation, killing the test subjects almost immediately, until there was only 2 doses remaining.
Initially, they had stolen it in order to sell to the highest bidder. After the death of their sister, the twins decided to follow in her foot steps and work for hire, but after an accidental leak in the containment unit, it turned out the Petrescu twins, code named "Quickstep" and "Cha-Cha" long dormant deviant genes were just the ingredient missing.
Tonight they would steal the final piece for the machine and would soon have the world in chaos.
True, they had ruined him, but the twins had nothing against their nephew. It wasn't truly his fault what happened to his mother, but destroying the reputation of the prodigy was the first step in the plot for revenge. This wasn't about creating worldwide chaos, well not entirely anyway. This was revenge for the sins of the father, because he was the reason Romana was dead.
Elena watched the boy pull the pretty redhead closer. She knew it was Toxic, it had to be. He must have tracked their speed trails and followed them here. He must not know who they are, or else he would have acted already. Lost in a sea of couples with almost the exact same height and build as her and her brother, she calculated that they were safe for now. But who was that girl?
Didn't he kill anything he touched? He was wearing gloves now, but she had clearly seen his bare hands on her almost every time they competed. An android, or perhaps a very lifelike hologram?
He was brilliant enough to create something like that. But no, the way they danced together, that was too spontaneous, too real to be a machine. Just looking at the way he held her now, Toxic looked as if he genuinely cared for the girl, and her for him.
Elena had spent years spying, reading people, and the truth could never hide from her.
What she saw was love. Young, inexperienced and innocent.
This confused her, it was worldwide knowledge that this Toxic was void of any emotion and deadly to touch.
It was one hell of an act. Her nephew and this mysterious girl would make superb spies.
She stared hard at the girl, trying to string together what exactly it was that she was looking at. Perhaps she was a villainess with an immunity to radiation.
Whoever she was, it didn't matter. Nothing could stop their plans after tonight.
