one; late night swim

S1:E1 "Wolf Moon"

KAIA WENTWORTH WAS FREAKING OUT.

They had just returned home from the camping trip and all she wanted to do was take a relaxing bath.

The only problem was that as soon as her finger touched the water a blue tail replaced her legs.

She couldn't help but scream at the sight.

The girl looked like a fish, an actual fish with scales and she didn't know why.

She couldn't even dwell on this because she was startled by a knock on her bathroom door.

Her mom was concerned about her, Kaia had been acting strange ever since they went to Mako and she just wanted her to know she would always be there to talk about anything.

"Honey, are you okay? I heard you scream."

Her heart started to race, she couldn't let her mom see her like this. How was she going to explain the fact that she had a tail?

She didn't even know why herself. There wasn't much time to think since her mom started to open the door.

"I'm fine, there was a spider."

Her mom was a bit skeptical but she left the girl alone anyways.

Kaia sighed in relief and continued to fill the bath with bubbles knowing that when she was done she had to try to figure out what was happening to her.

__________ 🧜‍♀️ 🌊 _________

Four days after the bathtub incident, the Wentworth girl had searched through website after website, looking up symptoms.

She finally deduced that she was a mermaid.

There was nothing else she could do about it but accept it and find a way to cope.

This had to be the strangest thing that ever happened to her and to make matters worse she had to start her first day of school tomorrow.

New town, new school— well not new to her cousin, who was staying with her family while her parents studied marine biology in Australia.

Gabriella was born and raised in Beacon Hills, only leaving the town when she visited her aunt, uncle, and cousin.

The younger Wentworth girl was very close to her cousin, they were practically sisters.

Being thousands of miles apart would never change that. And now that Kaia moved to Beacon Hills, they were going to conquer high school together, like they did everything else.

Kaia entered Gabriella's bedroom still slightly freaked out by her circumstances and curious about the town she hardly visited.

The girl only knew Gabriella and a certain strawberry blonde she had run into at the mall a few days ago.

Of course, she should be focused on the fact that she was a supernatural creature, but stressing over high school seemed like the easier option.

She was a fan of ignoring her issues until they eventually go away.

Definitely a bad habit of hers but something she couldn't help.

"How's my favorite cousin in the entire world doing on this fine evening?"

Gabriella fought the urge to roll her eyes at the question.

"I'm your only cousin and I'm okay. My dumbass friends asked me to come with them to find a dead body."

Kaia was shocked at the statement but simply nodded, letting her cousin begin another one of her rants.

" I mean why do they think I'd want to risk my life— on a school night at that, to find half of a dead body when the killer could still be on the loose?

This is why I don't hang out with them as often as I do Erica.  She actually has common sense, unlike those two."

Gabriella let out a deep breath signaling the end of her mini-rant.

Her cousin sent her a comforting smile "I'm not exactly sure what to say to that except I'm glad you're here with me and not out there with them.

I do hope they're okay though, no one should be out this late, and tampering with a police investigation is asking for trouble. "

Gabriella agreed with her cousin and let out a worried sigh.

"Are you nervous about your first day tomorrow?"

Kaia snorted "One hundred percent, but at least I'll have you there. "

"Do you think I'll be the only new student?"

The younger Wentworth girl wanted to give her reassurance but she couldn't lie to her.

"Yeah I do, who the hell else would switch schools in the middle of the year?"

Kaia massaged her temples in an attempt to calm her nerves but it wasn't working at all.

Gabriella grabbed the older girl's hand to try and help her relax.

She wasn't expecting her eyes to glow a ghostly white and to slip into a trance-like state as she received a vision of her cousin.

It was almost as if she could see right through her. Gabriella was always good at understanding people's emotions and Kaia was the easiest to read.

She could tell something was off with her these past couple of days but she hadn't said a word about it.

Now she see exactly what was wrong.

Images flooded her mind, changing quickly but they all featured the same situation, her cousin Kaia.

Swimming around— with a tail.

As she slipped out of her vision, her cousin figured it out.

Kaia stared directly at her younger cousin and immediately knew.

Her secret was out.

Gabriella had been avoiding Kaia like the plague since she found out her secret.

It had only been a couple of hours but that was a lot for the duo.

The longest they'd gone without speaking to each other was thirty minutes.

Now Kaia was getting ready for school whilst Gabriella had left early meaning the former had to find her own way to school.

A text notification popped up on Kaia's phone from her only friend in the town, Lydia Martin.

The strawberry blonde, not redhead, had sent the girl a message to let her know she was on the way.

And to try and convince her to wear the outfit she had bought when they first met.

Kaia was conflicted, on one hand, she could blend in and fly under the radar but on the other hand, she could turn heads in an amazing outfit.

She chose the latter, changing as fast as humanly possible and grabbing an apple for breakfast.

Once she reached the car, Lydia smirked in approval of her outfit and they were off to school.

It never occurred to Kaia that Lydia would know this many people.

As she exited the passenger seat of Lydia's car and the strawberry blonde linked her arm to hers she noticed that all eyes were on her.

Lydia basked in the attention and even waved at a few people who she deemed worthy enough to be graced with her presence.

Kaia just plastered a smile on her face and tried to keep up, though her heels slowed her down a bit.

Meanwhile, a cute boy with a buzz cut had taken notice of the curly-haired girl and couldn't seem to pick his jaw up off of the floor.

And just like that it seemed every thought of Lydia Martin was erased from his mind, all because he laid eyes on Kaia Wentworth.

"Who is that?", the buzz-cut boy asked his best and only friend, still in a daze.

Scott turned his head toward the direction his best friend was looking in and ended up making eye contact with the Wentworth girl.

She sent both him and Stiles a kind smile, before being dragged away by Lydia.

After visiting her locker Lydia gave Kaia directions to the principal's office, apparently, she was supposed to get a tour and her locker assignment.

She had also learned from Lydia that there was another new girl.

Guess you were wrong Gabriella, she thought.

Lydia figured her job was done and gave the girl a small hug before leaving her.

About three minutes later, a man in a suit approached her with a pale brunette not far behind.

"You must be the other new student, follow me. "

The group of three entered an English classroom, and the principal introduced the two new girls and exited.

Kaia looked around for a seat and the only one left was next to the boy with the buzzcut from earlier.

She waved at him and noticed that his cheeks turned red, which made her laugh softly.

The class flew by and Kaia could not remember a single thing the teacher said.

Lydia was waiting for her at her locker.

"Did you meet the other new girl?"

"Not officially."

"Well let's go talk to her."

Kaia didn't mind talking to Allison at all, the girl was pretty and seemed nice enough even though they'd never spoken a word to each other.

"That jacket is absolutely killer, where'd you get it?"

Allison seemed surprised by their sudden appearance but replied nonetheless, "My mom was a buyer for a boutique back in San Francisco."

Lydia smiled and squealed on the inside, happy to have met Allison.

"And you are our new best friend. I'm Lydia and this is Kaia."

The Wentworth girl smiled at the Argent and was about to make conversation when Lydia's boyfriend Jackson came over.

He immediately connected his lips to the popular girl's, not caring that there were two other people there.

A few lockers down, Harley was approaching Stiles and Scott.

"Can someone tell me how the new girls have been here all of five minutes and they're already hanging with Lydia's clique?"

Stiles turned around toward his friend, "Because they're hot, beautiful people herd together."

Lydia introduced Kaia and Allison to her boyfriend and he glanced at Kaia blatantly checking her out in front of his girlfriend.

She realized immediately that he was an asshole.

Lydia started a conversation to end the awkward silence.

"So this weekend there's a party."

Allison glanced at Kaia and the latter could tell the Argent didn't want to go.

"Friday night. You guys should come." the blue eye jock added.

Allison made up a lie about family night, and it was obviously not the truth but Lydia didn't pick up on it.

Yet she was somewhat satisfied since Kaia accepted the invitation.

___________ 🧜‍♀️ 🌊 __________

Kaia Wentworth was having a minor panic attack.

She was at a party full of strangers and she could not pinpoint anyone she knew.

So she went to grab a drink, hoping it would ease her nerves.

The alcohol in the red solo cup burned as it went down the mermaid's throat.

She was starting to feel the effects when she felt someone staring at her.

The girl glanced around the area until her eyes locked on a certain brooding stranger with dark hair and the greenest eyes she'd ever seen.

Derek Hale was extremely confused.

He had come to a party full of teenagers to watch out for Scott but caught an unfamiliar scent.

Following his senses, the Hale figured out where the scent was coming from.

He didn't know who the girl was or how to describe her scent but he did know one thing.

She was no ordinary human.

Derek's suspicions were confirmed when the full moon came into view.

Something inside Kaia's body was telling her to look at the night sky and when she saw the moon, she lost all control over herself.

She was being guided by something deeper. An urge to leave and find the nearest body of water.

So the curly-haired girl had no choice but to do so.

Before she knew it, she was at a lake near Beacon Hills Preserve.

The girl couldn't fight it anymore, she surrendered to the power of the moon. Water splashed and the only thing visible was the girl's blue tail.

She felt at peace, nothing was holding her down.

She swam for hours and hours, giggling and splashing.

Until the moon's effects wore off and she made her way home, with no memory of what had happened the night before.

The only thing she knew was that it was most likely supernatural.

And she needed help.
