Twenty-Five
My parents and I walked through the park following the trails along the trees. Flowers were in full bloom covering all the bushes as a misty fog begin to roll in. The weather took on a gloomy atmosphere making it easy to feel depressed. Somehow though even through the fog, Sammy beams like a ray of sunshine. We continue to explore for a few hours before taking a seat on a bench.
"Gage seems like a really nice boy," my mother had to bring up the awkward topic of the boy they met last night. I was reminded of the hug and the kiss we shared yesterday, making me want to crawl out of my own skin. I shook my head trying to brush my mother's question out of my mind, her attention focused so intensely on me that was impossible.
"We accidentally broke onto his private beach," Sammy stated without holding any excitement back. I rolled my eyes yes, that was the best way she could have told them how we met him.
"Accidentally broke on his private beach?" my father piped-in. There was no way to fix the situation now, we might as well just tell them he's a serial killer and get it over with.
"When we first got here Sammy and I decided to go check out the local beach scene. We didn't realize that where we were was someone's backyard. He came out and greeted us and asked us if we wanted to go surfing with him and we've just hung out since. Nothing is going on he's just been very welcoming for us. He's helped us get a lay of the land." I tried to fill the gap with any words so Sammy would shut up. Anything she had to say would just make things worse. Sometimes she wasn't good at taking social cues. My parents nodded their head with my description of how we met Gage as if they were okay with it at the moment.
"Well, who wants to get something to eat?" Sammy claps her hands together before jumping from the bench and wandering off down the pathway. My mother joyously tagging along. My father and I stumbled with our slower starts but soon enough we were along with the others.
We found another small little cafe about a 10-minute walk from where we had been sitting. When we entered the eatery there were wind chimes hanging around the outside of the patio. The building was made of wood that looks distressed as if it had been left out in a storm. When we entered we were welcomed with the smell of burgers cooking on a grill. I licked my lips taking in wonderful sent before we took our seat. A waitress quickly ran over to take our drink orders before rushing off to help someone else.
"Well have you girls figured anything out about what you want to do?" we all browser our menus as my mother's question drifted through the conversation. I glanced up at Sammy trying to get help for what we should tell them.
"We've been spending a lot of time in the library but nothing too much quite yet we're still just trying to get settled." I hope that was enough to keep my mother satisfied for the time being. My mother seemed to shrug it off taking that as an acceptable answer, her finger browsing the menu for something to eat. Shortly after we all made our decisions a waitress appeared to take our orders before disappearing into the kitchen. I swirled the straw in my water before taking a drink.
"Enough about us, what have you guys been up to." this was my brilliant plan, and hopefully they would take the bait. If I could get the attention off of Sammy and I then the rest of this lunch would be smooth sailing. I checked the clock on my phone it was half past noon.
"We actually started redecorating the house now that you moved out. It's going to be so pretty we've been going with blues and greys and the furniture is coming along so nicely I can't wait for you guys to see it." smile plastered across my face was enough to make the detour worth it. I should really ask her about what's going on in her life more often and a sudden wave of guilt rushed over me as I realized Sammy and I never really did take the time to ask what was going on in their life.
"Read it after we moved out!" Sammy's voice was a little louder than she had intended it to be. She quickly grabbed her hand over her mouth to cover it. I couldn't help but chuckle lightly. My mother waved her fingers the waitress brought out our food. I quickly grabbed the burger I had ordered before shoving it into my mouth to take my first bite. The juices drip down my face and onto my plate as I chewed the tender meat. Setting it back down on the plate, I quickly grabbed a few of my fries plopping them into my mouth before devouring the rest of my meal. I glanced over at my mother's salad feeling sorry that she had ordered something not nearly as good as my food.
After our wonderful lunch, I excuse myself to head to the restroom. I searched the restaurant looking for the doorway with the recognizable symbol. Once I finally found it I made a beeline through the tables to get to them as quickly as possible. The door to the kitchen flew open, a blonde girl rushing out of it nearly sideswiping me on my journey to the restroom. Her arm shot up to mine as she grabbed a hold of me to keep her balance. A sudden jolt of electricity sent through my veins has caused me to look at the perfectly manicured hand touching my skin. Long pink fingernails wrapped around my forearm but the electricity never stopped. But I shot up to greet the face staring right back at me. Did she fill it to?
My heart was racing as I stood against the wall the blonde girl looking at me. A girl came rushing past us as she rushed into the bathroom behind me. My breath hitched in my throat stuck on the words that were begging to come out.
Asada!
