Thirty-Seven

My heart catches in my throat, my eyes glued to the bubble that had now disappeared around Gage. He clenches at his throat gasping for air. I jump into action, rushing towards him. Wrapping my arms around his body I pull him close to me. Searching the waves of the ocean for any way I can get him to the surface in time.

"Careful Olyvya, his body has to acclimate, but you better hurry or he will drown." Asada's voice tugs at my heartstrings. How could she do this to someone? What kind of crazy person was she? I continue to hold Gage close to me as I start swimming towards the surface. He lashed in my grasp, his body twisting from the lack of oxygen. My heart was breaking into a million pieces, tears streaming down my face. I needed to save him. I tried to go as slow as I could while still feeling like I'd make it to the surface.

I tried to think back to my high school health class, how long can someone stay underwater until they get brain damage? I wanted to kick myself for not remembering, or paying more attention in that class. But upon thinking about kicking myself I realized even if I had time to right now I wouldn't be able to. Cursing myself under my breath, I can't do anything right.

Gage wraps his arms around my throat, his hands weak as he tries to hold on to me. His chest motionless as it sits against mine. Gage was running out of air and I needed to figure something out. I started thinking about all the things Gage and I had done together. All the help he has given Sammy and I. He pretty much welcomed us into his home and has taken my secret on as if it was his own. I couldn't lose him, this journey wasn't done. I still needed him to help me figure things out. I needed his beautiful brain to figure out what was going on with me.

Before I could even think of anything else I was reminded of the kiss. Gage's once soft supple lips seemed lifeless now, taking on a blue hue. The tears rolled even faster down my cheeks now. I was never going to be able to kiss him again. I placed my hand on his face, pulling him closer to the surface with every passing second. We were getting closer but not nearly close enough.

"Gage," I whispered, my heart racing, the tears crashing against me tiny blue crystals roaming the water, "I'm so sorry," I lean forward looking at his face. His eyes were closed, there was no way he heard me. His hair flowing around his head, he was truly beautiful. Even in the worst state possible, he still took my breath away. Closing the distance between us I place my lips against his, a jolt of electricity stinging my lips as I did so. I pulled back quickly, his lips less blue than before.

I glance back up at the surface, we were still too far away. Leaning forward once more I place my lips on Gage's and kiss him slowly. His lips motionless, but the passion was still there. His grip tightens around my neck slightly. My heart jumps in my chest. It seemed like the more I kissed him the better he was. I pushed through the tingly feeling, the same feeling I felt whenever Asada touched me. Except this was more romantic, this was sensual, this felt good.

Gage seemed to come back to life, his face gaining it's color once again. I shook my head realizing what I needed to do.

"Gage, this is going to be weird and I'm sorry," I mutter just hoping he heard me. Quickly I plant my lips against his pressing all the air from my lungs into his. Also as quickly as the thought had come to me Gage had regained most his strength, he clenched his hands around my shoulders much firmer now. His body melting into mine as he turned this into a deep passionate kiss. The kiss of life.

I kicked my fin faster, holding his lips against mine. We were almost there, I could feel the water thinning out, the pressure disappearing as we approach the surface. I quickly pull away clamping my hand over his lips. I wanted to kiss him more but there would be plenty of time for that later. I glance up at the water once last time before thrusting my fin as hard as I could.

The water broke around us as I launch into the air, Gage suddenly heavier than before. I struggled to keep my hold of him as we bob on the top of the waves. He gasps for air, breathing heavily trying to store as much as he could in his lungs.

"Oly," He whispers, his voice raspy and scratchy. Nothing like the sweet voice he normally possesses. I smile when he says my name, my heart slowly putting itself back together. I grabbed his hands pulling them around my throat and placing him on my back. He dangles his legs on either side of my fin as I began to swim us back to the shore.

Hopefully, Asada didn't take us too far away from home. I began to panic once again, every wave looking the same as before. I had no sense of where I was going without going under to see the terrain. I wasn't sure which was our home was.

I stop turning in place to search the open waters. Gage and I were lost in the middle of the sea, his life completely in my hands.

"You wouldn't happen to know where we are?" I question, my voice shaking.

"Nope," Gage shakes his head, his arms pressed into my skin. He must be freezing by now. The sun was beginning to set on the horizon, giving me some sense of direction. I began swimming away from the sun and towards what was hopefully our shore.

"Oly, you are a dream come true," Gage whispers in my ear before dropping his head on my shoulder. I turn to look at him the best I could from here. He had fallen asleep.

"Sweet dreams Gage," I smiled, continuing to swim us to safety.
