Nine

"Olyvya, what is going on with you?" Sammy's voice shot through the air, her feet thudding against the hard sand. Someone was following her. The tiny rocks dug into the skin on my knee, my face soaked with tears. My heart was thumping in my chest, I had no clue what was going on, or if I could keep it a secret.

"I'm dying... I don't know... I'm turning blue," I whimper between gasps of breath. Sammy was beside me in a heartbeat, ready to give me some kind of speech on how impolite it was to run away like I had.

"No, Oly, you don't look blue." She tried to brush my hair away from my face, I turned away from her. My tears were growing heavier now. They fell softly to the ground in tiny glowing orbs, clinking together as they hit the next. I was too focused on crying to notice the crystals at my knees. "What are these?" Sammy brushed through the sand grabbing as many of the crystals she could. She held around twenty tiny teardrop-shaped gems.

My fingers shot to my eyes feeling a new crystal forming under my eye. It sat threatening to fall from the corner of my almond eye. I plucked it away from my skin feeling a slight pinch where it had been. My heart was calm as I stared at the tiny gem. My body too numb to feel anything. The blue-green gem shined brightly in the sun.

"Are you crying diamonds?" Gage shouted, reaching down to grab some more from the sand. My eyes had suddenly gone dry, my ability to cry whisked away with my logic. I shook my head violently, this couldn't be real, whatever was happening I needed it to stop. I stare emotionless at the little crystals.

"I don't think they are diamonds. I don't think those can be blue, everything here is the most brilliant sheen of blue I have ever seen." Sammy twists and turns the jewels in her hands, trying to scratch them with each other, biting them to see if they would break, and trying to bend them with her fingers. I didn't know I just needed to cry to get everyone to leave me alone.

"Guys..." I whispered, my voice too hoarse to speak much louder. The pair was completely captivated by the little shiny rocks. My mind settled with silence. My heart called to the waves of the sea crashing close by. I stood from where I had been kneeling, my body shaking under my weight. My legs had fallen asleep from sitting in the sand.

I watched the two continue to shoot questions at each other. My feet pulled me towards the water, my steps careful and calculated. The sun was setting over the ocean, sending a lovely orange hue emanating off the caps of the waves. I just wanted to go for a swim. To take away all of the pain I was feeling. My body tingled with joy as I drew closer to the edge of the shore.

"Olyvya?" Sammy questioned, running towards me.

I was silent. There was nothing I could say. This wasn't something I could just turn around and explain to them. I couldn't tell them what was happening because even I didn't know what was happening. I wanted to just run on instincts and hope that this would all make sense eventually. With questions rushing through my head, I turned to look at the redhead rushing down the shore.

"They are aquamarine. There is no other gem this stunning." She showed me the gems in her hand. I smacked them away, not wanting to look at the changes in my life anymore. My body almost in a trance.

"Olyvya!" Gage shouted, finding his way beside Sammy. He reached for my arm, I quickly yanked it away before turning again toward the water. I took the last few steps, the water now rushing over my feet. That recognizable tingling feeling began to prick all of my skin. I took a step farther.

These people were going to see the monster I had become. They were going to see the scales covering my body. I wasn't sure what was going to happen when they did, maybe they would run away and scream, but as long as they told no one then I would be able to move. I could live on my own. Maybe I would go home. Sammy was a nice girl, she could make new friends.

"Olyvya, what are you doing?" I turned to look at Sammy, the words going in one ear and out the other. I continued taking steps backward, the water now above my knees. I stopped to take in my surroundings. The rocks in the water, the cliff, the trail leading to Gage's house, oh that beautiful house. If I was normal I would hope to one day live in a house like that. I hadn't even been able to keep myself a secret for twenty-four hours. I was a disgrace, I needed to live on my own, away from everyone else. Once I showed them what was happening to me, they would disappear.

Sammy rushed into the water after me. Gage quickly removed his pants to follow. Their shoes scattered across the beach as if they threw them off in a hurry. The tingles were taking over my body now. My feet turned blue-green, like the first time. I glanced down, watching my feet. Sammy's arms were wrapped around me now. She was struggling to pull me back to the shore, tears falling down her face. She wasn't strong enough, the transformation had already begun to take place. The scales now covered my thighs, the tingles beginning to burn.

Gage bent down grabbing a handful of water before throwing it in my face. He continued splashing the water onto my skin, the water drenching my hair. I shook my head, spitting the water, trying to get the salt out of my mouth. The clouds were beginning to clear from my mind, and I realized what I had been doing.

"Sammy. Gage!" I screamed before the scales had completely taken over my body. I wasn't able to stand anymore, my legs seemed to sew themselves together. Sammy didn't have the strength to hold me up anymore either. With the water taking control and a blue light shining around my entire body, I fell backward into the waves. Water crashed over my face.

Everything went dark.
