Fourteen
"What do you think of this town so far?" I shoved my hands in the pockets of my jacket. Taking in all the sights and smells. Gage and I were heading down the paved pathway through the farmers market looking at all the little trinkets. Children were running around, the boys chasing after girls with tiny pigtails bouncing. Parents filed their baskets with fresh fruit and vegetables, stopping to look at the plentiful items. I shrug, stopping at a booth that was selling little handmade necklaces.
"It's a nice little town with oddly a homey feel when there are people like you will billion dollar houses." I teased. Gage rolled his eye watching me as I focused on the necklace hanging delicately from the display. It had tiny blue-green beads that reminded me of the ocean, the lined the chain before meeting in the middle to a mermaid pendant. The necklace was truly stunning.
"Do you want it?" Gage questioned, leaning on the counter to look at the price on the little white tag. I shook my head taking a few steps away from the jewelry.
"No, it's too much," I mumbled. I passed a few more stands with all different assortments of jewels, earrings, to necklaces, to bracelets, anything you could imagine. Different diamonds, and gems, all adorning in different colors of sparkling stones.
Gage lingered for a moment before catching back up with me. I smiled up at him taking in his features as he looked back at me. This really was nice. A breeze wafted through the air smelling like cookies and daisies.
"Do you think we should hit an actual grocery store?" Gage was leading the way now, buzzing past the rest of the produce stands. I nodded my head, Sammy and I weren't much for preparing our own food. "It's just down here." Gage pointed as we started heading in the direction of the store.
We entered a tiny little market, each of us grabbing our own baskets before heading to the first aisle.
"So Olyvya, what do you like to do in your free time?" Gage seemed nervous as he asked. The trip this morning had been rather uneventful both in conversation and general actions. Gage had picked me up at around nine in the morning, and here we were at the grocery store half past ten. I glanced over some of the protein bars lined on the shelves.
"I've always loved to work on old cars." My face flushed, feeling embarrassed by my answer. It was true though, my father and I would work on old cars together in his garage. We would find the saveable ones and drag them home, restoring them, before selling them.
"Are you serious?" Gage smiled a toothy grin as he grabbed some cookies and cream bars, placing them in his basket. I nodded, heading further down the aisle.
"Yep, motor grease is kind of my thing." I wanted to smack myself. That sounded absolutely ridiculous. I could feel my face getting hot and grower redder than it had been before. I felt like disappearing. There wasn't anything I could have said to sound more like a loser.
"That's really awesome honestly, I wish my father and I had something like that we could do together." He smiled and my heart melted.
"You don't have something you do with your father?" I grabbed a couple more boxes placing them in the basket moving onto the next aisle.
"The last time I saw my parents was probably last year. They are always too busy traveling, I'm not about that lifestyle so I usually stay home and watch the house, I just want to be by the sea." There was a sadness that took over the conversation. Gage stares at the food items in his basket.
"So you live in that big house all alone?" I grabbed a couple more items, finally ready to head back to the house.
"Yeah," He ran his hand through his hair glancing over his basket for the umpteenth time. "Are you done? Ready to go?" He questions. We make our way through the last aisle heading to the cash register. The lines wrapped around the end of the checkstand overflowing into the first aisle.
"They must only have one cashier today," Gage mumbled stepping on his tiptoes to see what the hold up was.
"Its okay, Sammy is probably distracted by all the books." I grabbed his arm pulling him back down to earth. I wasn't in a rush. I actually quite enjoyed hanging out with Gage. He had been around and it felt like neither Sammy nor I really had a chance to get to know him. He has been so focused on helping us figure out what was going on with me. I felt like I needed to pay him back.
"Oh, well I figured you want to get back to your house to you know, continue working on our project." I shot him a side glance. I knew what he was talking about but he was suddenly asking weird.
"You know we don't have to always hang out at my house, we can sometimes go to yours." I smiled bumping him with my arm trying to lighten the mood after his awkward comment.
"Why would anyone want to hang out at my house?" He winked placing his basket on the conveyor belt, grabbing mine placing it next to his. I turned quickly to grab a drink out of the fridge. Bending over to reach for the Pepsi on the bottom shelf. A taller girl came rushing past Gage and I nearly knocking me over as she pushed past us towards the back of the store. "Hey, watch it," I shouted before Gage grabbed me pulling me into him wrapping his hand around my mouth. I didn't have a clue what was going on.
"You don't yell at Asada like that." He whispered into my ear, watching as the blonde girl continued running down the aisle. She was gone just as fast as she had appeared. What the hell was she running after?
"Why who is Asada?"
