Twenty-Six
Allison's POV:
"My mother had a hypnotist who helped her quit smoking." Lydia informed, jotting something down on a notepad while the rest of us looked through the drawers for a lighter or a candle. "She had me see the same one when I was ten."
Scott stopped looking through one of the lockers from beside me and slowly turned to Lydia. "You smoked when you were ten?"
"No! I bit my fingernails." Lydia scoffed before waving her hand dismissively. "Just find a lighter or a candle, please."
Malia flicked something on which causes me to turn, seeing the large flame from the blow torch. "Too much?"
I quickly grab it from her hands and turn it off. "For you to hold, yes."
"I got one." Scott announced and quickly places the white candle on the table.
I flick the blow torch on once more and carefully hover it over until it lit a small flame.
"Alright Allison, sit." Lydia grabbed my shoulders and guided me to sit down on the chair with a reassuring smile. "All you have to do is relax and close your eyes."
"What's that?" Scott curiously asked as Lydia held the small notepad.
"An induction script. Since neither of you has done this before, I have to talk it through with her." She answered but Malia snatched it from her hands. "Hey--"
"What? You just read it, right?" Malia questioned. "Can't be too hard."
Lydia looks to me for help but I shrug, gesturing for her to try. "Well, you have to soften your voice. Keep it relaxed, but not monotone. Go for clarity, not volume. Try it."
Malia clears her throat and I took that as my cue to close my eyes. "Take a deep breath and look at the candle--" Malia awkwardly and brokenly spoke, leaving me to stifle a laugh from escaping my lips and I snap open my eyes in amusement.
"Nevermind." Lydia grumbled under her breath, snatching the notepad from her hands.
"Remind me to study with you when this is all over." I whisper and Malia quickly nods with a smile.
"Take a deep breath and look at the candle." Lydia gently spoke and my eyes fall to the candle in front of me. "Feel the muscles in your body begin to relax. Your hands relaxing. Your eyelids relaxing."
The longer she spoke, my eyelids begin to feel heavier and heavier.
"As you relax, visualize yourself in a place you've considered as your safe haven. A place filled with comfort. Warmth."
I slowly open my eyes and to my surprise, I was sitting on top of a bed but it wasn't in a room I'm familiar with.
It was mid-finished since some of the shelves already had small knick-knacks such as small plants and blank picture frames.
My eyes trail along the packed boxes stacked on top of each other and I furrow my brows in confusion. "I'm in a room with...boxes to move in?"
"That's okay." Lydia calmingly assured. "Those boxes that you're seeing? If you open one, they contain a memory connected to Olivia."
I slowly nod as I walk closer to the box and peel off the tape then opened the lid.
"Not her sister, her aunt. The one who murdered all those people." The girl in the plaid long sleeve whispered from their locker.
My heart sinks in remembrance, watching my past self sadly look down to the dress I was planning to wear later that day. The day of Kate's funeral.
Her friend wearing a green knitted sweater scoffed at her response. "You mean the crazy bitch who killed all those people."
"Yeah the fire, all those animal attacks, it was her aunt."
"Are you kidding? I sit next to her in English."
"Find a new seat." The girl responded with a laugh, causing her friend to giggle as well.
Before I could leave the memory, a girl loudly scoffs from across the hallway which causes their attention to shift towards her. "Instead, how about you find a new hobby instead of gossiping like children. I mean, seriously?" She glared, making them drop their smiles. "Get lost, assholes."
My past self watches with a small smile, seeing the two girls immediately shut their lockers and quickly walk away. "You didn't have to do that, you know." She mumbled as the girl approached my locker. "You're not gonna believe the stories and run off too?"
"I mean, I'm still here right?" She replied, making her smile. "Besides, no one deserves that."
"This was the day I first met her." I whisper, watching as they talked amongst themselves and walked to class but I couldn't get a clear view of Olivia since her back was facing towards me.
"Okay, that's starting somewhere. Keep looking." Lydia's voice echoed around me as the memory slowly faded into white, bringing me back to the unpacked boxes.
I pull open the small box from beside me, revealing it to be a Hasselblad film camera.
"As of this day forward, Olivia Flores is considered one of my best friends!" I hear myself declare with a slight laugh and the video immediately played on the camera.
"Oh god," Olivia whined, covering her face with the blanket.
"I mean, look at her! Who wouldn't want to be friends with her?" My past self says, moving the blanket away so she could film Olivia.
"Please stop," My eyes soften at her face, finally getting a clear view of her beautiful brown eyes to crinkle with playful annoyance as my past self wrapped an arm around her neck to make their faces pressed together. "Allison you're all sweaty, get off."
"Nope, I want you to keep this as a memory to remember. We can look back at this and laugh about it in the future."
"Keep what as a memory, Allison?" Lydia's voice echoed again.
"It's...a camera." I whisper, watching the film play.
"She's kidnapped me against my will. Help!" Olivia giggles, trying to snatch the device away but I still managed to place the camera beside us, while fighting her grips.
Somehow, my past self gives a small but hard enough shove to make her roll off the bed. However, she manages to grab my arm and make her fall on top of Olivia, hearing a small thud once they hit the ground.
"Ow." Olivia groaned and I hear my giggles escape from my lips. "Was it really necessary to shove me?"
To my surprise, I saw my eyes flicker down and see her doing the same.
I click next.
"Weren't you terrified about what was spread about Allison within the school?" My mom's voice rang out and I turn, seeing as Olivia, her mom, my parents, Gerard, and I sat around the table eating dinner. "Didn't you feel like you were invading someone's conversation?"
"Mom." I scold with annoyance.
"W-Well--" Olivia's voice squeaked. "It just annoyed me a lot to see her upset. I would hope someone would do the same for me."
I place a comforting hand on her knee to stop it from shaking. "And I'm grateful she did." I assure before turning to Olivia with a grateful smile. "Or else I wouldn't have made another best friend."
"Find another memory. Keep searching For Olivia through the videos in the camera." Scott insisted.
I click next.
"Alright then let me make this short and sweet." I snapped, turning to face her in the car. "We both need to pretend that it never happened because it shouldn't have happened."
Her eyes widen. "I-I--"
"Olivia, I'm with Scott. Don't you get that? We never should have almost kissed." I raised my voice. "He's my boyfriend!"
Her expression shifts into a glare. "From the way you almost kissed me, it seemed like you forgot."
"You're unbelievable." I scoffed. "Did you really think within the same day I would dump him for you?"
I clicked the button again, not wanting to hear the argument.
"In all seriousness, don't worry too much. You're supposed to enjoy a normal night with your friends and not worry about the Kanima. If anything, I'll be there if you need me to be." She lifted her fist, waiting for me to bump her hand. "I got your back."
I bump it against hers with a grin. "And I got yours."
I click the button again.
I hold her chin, tilting her head left to right to examine the cuts from the birds' talons. "You got hurt." I softly whisper, brushing my thumb across her cheek which causes her to wince.
She gives a small smile. "Better me than you."
Again.
"Put this on." I hand her the shirt, trying my hardest not to stare at her exposed chest. She slips the shirt over her head and she does the most unexpected thing that I never would have guessed.
She pecks my cheek with a shy smile on her face. "Thanks for, you know, saving my life."
Again.
"You were the main reason why I wanted to come back. The whole time when I was gone, I felt small and I never really knew why." I softly respond with a small smile. "But then I couldn't stop thinking about you and it stressed me out because I was afraid things were going to change between us, but it was like nothing ever happened. Of course, it was awkward at first, but we were still friends and I wanted nothing more than for it to stay that way if it was something that you wanted. I couldn't imagine a life in which I didn't get to see you every day. I didn't want to. Even if it means we're being faced with danger or staying in crappy motels, I will take whatever life with you I can get if we could face it together. I'm happy with you, Olivia."
"I-I-I—um. What are w-words?" She stammers which earns a smile to form on my lips.
"Do I make you nervous?"
"Sort of? B-But me happy too you make." Her eyes slightly widen. "I mean, you make me happy too."
Hesitation practically radiated her body as her eyes flickered between my eyes and lips which causes me to huff. "Olivia, you've seriously got to stop thinking too much." I grab the collar of her jacket and pull her to crash my lips against hers.
I click the button again, ignoring the tears beginning to fill my eyes at the sight of Olivia drenched in gasoline with a flare in her hand.
"You've become someone very important to us, you're the light in our lives--my life. Olivia, you're one of my best friends and since then, we've become closer a-and...I need you." I tearfully whispered.
Her brows furrowed as she blankly stared at me taking another step closer to the puddle formed around her.
"I'll always need you and no matter what you go through, I'll always be there for you. Just like how you were with me when I thought I was alone."
I quietly let out a sob, clicking the button again for the next scene.
"Wait, yes?" Her eyes widen. "Yes as in...?"
"Yes as in," I press my forehead against hers. "I want to be with you too."
"Oh thank god. Does that mean I can kiss you now?"
"I'd prefer it if you did." I laugh before I lean in to kiss her again as my arms wrap securely around her neck.
"Keep connecting, Allison!" Scott's voice rang out again. "Dive deeper into the good and bad memories!"
"All these things that you've done and still do, make me love you even more. I love you, Olivia."
I click it again, my eyes softening at the sight of my past self cradling Olivia in my arms as she clutched onto her bloodied side.
"In a way i-it's perfect. I'm dying in the arms of my first friend, my first girlfriend, the first girl that made me believe that I-I'd never ever be alone. To never feel alone." She breathed out as her thumb brushed across my cheek. "The first girl...who always made me feel loved. The girl I'll always love. I-I love you." Her voice cracked as her fingers trail to her jawline. "I love you, A-Allison Argent."
I sob, not bothering to wipe the tears that flowed down my eyes and click the button again.
"Feels like the universe is always against us, huh?" I hear myself dryly chuckle.
"I mean, once I get my powers under control we can hang out again. You're still my best friend." Olivia offered a small smile. "That is if you still want to."
"Always."
I click the button again and take a seat on the bed.
Olivia squeezed my hands as we stood in the middle of her room. "Just like you said, even if it means we're being faced with danger or staying in crappy motels, I will take whatever life with you I can get if we could face it together. Even if our ancestors weren't able to. I'm tired of being scared and I want that to change."
"What does that mean for us?"
"I want to be happy and I'm always happy when I'm with you, Allison so will you please be my girlfriend so I can stop rambling?" She nervously spoke and I laugh at her rambled mess. "I'm serious, I'm just word vomiting whatever comes to mind at this point."
"I still think it's cute," I whisper before wrapping my arms around her neck and pressing my head against hers. "but yes. I'll be your girlfriend again and I'm always happy with you too."
The memory transitions to me straddling her waist with a mischievous grin. "Well consider this as a study break. The greatest minds deserve to rest."
She raises a brow in amusement, resting her hands on my hips. "So what I'm hearing is that I'm close to becoming a genius?"
"My genius." I emphasized with a chuckle before I pecked her lips. "My beautiful, loving, hilarious—"
"Uh-huh...keep it going." She teased, peppering kisses along the sides of my neck. "Don't stop with the compliments."
"Annoying, obnoxious, stubborn, and sometimes awkward—"
She pulls away with a gasp. "What the—"
"Girlfriend." I finally finished with a giggle at her disbelief. "L'amour de ma vie."
I click the button one last time and instantly the memory shifts into me holding a frame of a constellation with Olivia sitting beside me.
"I wanted to give this to you for your birthday but something happened with the inscriptions for the constellation so I sent it back." Olivia softly spoke. "So...happy late birthday and happy half-anniversary?"
"The night she officially became my home." I read from the inscription before my eyes slightly widen in realization. "The date and coordinates...Olivia, did you buy a star?"
She nodded with a smile. "I sort of kick myself every day that I asked you to be my girlfriend the same night we were almost buried alive with our parents and ended up asking inside your room, rather than a romantic setting. So...since we can't exactly redo it, what better way would it be to buy you a star? It's the exact constellation that aligned the night I asked you."
Tears begin to brim in my eyes, shaking my head with disbelief. "How the hell am I supposed to top this with my gift for you. You're insane." I chuckle, placing the frame inside the box before I wrap my arms around her neck to pull her into a hug. "But it's what makes us work. I love it." I whisper, pulling back slightly to peck her lips. "I love you, I love you, I love you."
"I love you too."
Phoebe's POV:
I roll to the side, attempting to dodge the slash from the Ghost Rider's whip but it strikes against my arm in which I immediately let out a groan.
The Ghost Rider tries to rush forward and as I ignore the burning sensation on my arm, I swivel my legs to knock him to the ground.
Before he could retaliate, I unsheathe my dagger and slash the blade across its throat, leaving him to lay flat on the ground.
"Agh!" I snap my head towards the grunt, seeing as Theo struggled to fight the Ghost Rider's grips from trying to strangle him.
I quickly unholster the pistol on the dead Ghost Rider's belt and aim it towards the other. I pull the trigger and instantly the Ghost Rider crumbles to the ground, leaving Theo to widen his eyes in surprise.
"Should I keep score on how many times I've saved you?" I question as I carefully push myself up to my feet.
Another gunshot rings from the morgue and Liam limped out of the room in a pant. "That's the last of them."
"You sure about that?" Theo worriedly spoke up and pointed behind.
I follow his line of vision and my eyes widen, seeing as another dozen Ghost Riders barely turned the corner.
I aim the gun towards them but as soon as I pull the trigger, nothing comes out. "Well, that's great." I grumble, tossing the pistol to the side.
Before I could rush forward, I feel a hand harshly yank me backward and I stumble into the elevator. "What the--" I look up, meeting Theo's smug expression as he threw in Liam inside as well. "Theo?"
"What are you doing?" Liam angrily asked.
"Being the bait." Theo casually answered as the elevator doors closed. "Mark a point for me saving your ass Phoebe, why don't you."
"No!" Liam scrambles to stand to his feet but the elevator doors close before he could.
I try to stand but the burning sensation on my arm causes me to groan. I glance down, seeing the bright greenish sludge slash mark on my arm.
That's not good.
