Phoebe's POV:
"It's not just a pack, okay? There's an Alpha, a girl that can literally shoot flames out of her hands at will, and a Banshee..." We hear Nolan stammer from below the exhibit structure. "They're all here."
Before the two armored men could turn and see me, I quickly duck behind the boulder.
"I don't see all of them."
"I don't see anyone."
"I-I saw Theo, Phoebe, and Liam bringing a car full of food and supplies right here! There were at least nine sleeping bags, okay?" Nolan emphasized but I quietly move back towards where Liam and Theo sat on the other side of the piled rocks. "They're here! They're all here!"
"It's just two guys and Nolan." I whisper.
Liam huffed in annoyance. "This isn't going to work."
"Where's the backup? I mean, shouldn't there be, like, twenty of them?" Theo curiously asked.
"Well, isn't it obvious?" I question and gesture to myself. "They think I'll be easy to take down so, of course, they would send two if they only saw you guys. They won't believe Nolan unless they see it's a bigger threat than they intended."
"Okay...then they have to believe us." Theo whispered before clearing his throat. "Isn't that right?" He exclaimed, causing my eyes to widen.
"Quiet!" I scold. "Are you trying to get them to find us?"
"You got a problem?" Theo argued with a scoff. "Oh, that's right, you always have a problem! Typical Phoebe needing to be right at everything."
"What the hell are you doing?" Liam angrily whispered.
"Shut up!" Theo yelled, causing Liam's eyes to widen in disbelief. "Yeah, you see that, Olivia? Poor little Phoebe can't take the heat. Allison, don't tell me she forgot how to stand up for herself." Theo continued and I slowly nod, playing along with his act. "She's gone soft."
"Says the guy who's practically on their toes around Malia." I loudly remark. "Isn't it hilarious, Malia?"
"I still don't get--" Liam tried to whisper but instantly Theo jabbed his fist forward to connect to Liam's nose, causing him to stumble backward. "Agh!"
"See that Scott? Your little Beta can't even take a punch." Theo smirked as Liam scrambled to stand on his feet. "What, you think he can take me?"
Liam glanced between us before slowly nodding in understanding. "Okay, I get it. But did you actually have to punch me?"
I quietly crawl back to my spot, seeing as the two hunters curiously eye the spot where they heard our shouts. "It's working!" I whisper but as I turn to Liam and Theo, I wince at the sight of the two boys throwing fists back and forth.
"See what I mean, Scott?" Theo panted. "He's only good in a fight when he's angry. So, let's see how angry he gets."
Oh boy.
Olivia's POV:
"Any...twos?" Malia asks me as I adjust my posture beside Allison in the trunk backseat to hide my cards.
"Nope." She huffs in annoyance and takes another card from the deck. "Do you have any nines?" She lets out a growl as she hands me the card and I grin, placing the pair to the side. "Sevens?"
"What the--you're cheating!" Malia exclaimed, tossing the card in my direction once more. "This game is stupid."
"No, you just suck." I snicker and lean close to Allison who was nervously glancing between the SUVs parked in front of the Argent Arms International building and Lydia, who sat in the front seat with Argent, waiting for Liam's text to confirm that the plan worked.
Since Monroe and the rest of the hunters weren't after Mason and Phoebe since they weren't supernatural (well in Phoebe's case, assuming she wasn't since nobody but our closest friends knew about her abilities), we planned on using them to lure Nolan to them at the abandoned Hill Valley Zoo.
Apparently, Agent McCall had an interrogation with Gerard and we were able to learn the type of security system he had so we could gain the upper hand.
But since we couldn't take separate cars, we managed to cram inside Argent's car with him and Lydia in the front, Malia and Scott in the mid-seats, leaving Allison and I to squeeze in the backseat trunk.
"Scott, have you played goldfish with Olivia before?" Malia questioned, making him turn away from the building. "She has to be cheating, right?"
"Can we please just sit in silence?" Chris sighed as he pinched the bridge of his nose.
"It's Go-fish." Scott gently corrected but her brows furrow into confusion. "Goldfish is a cheese snack or an animal."
"But I thought those are called Cheez-its?"
"They're two different cheese snacks." Allison spoke up, moving to rest her head against my shoulder.
"That's stupid." Malia grumbled, crossing her arms over her chest. "Just like this game."
"Well, you kept asking for the same cards for the past five minutes so, of course, you're not winning." Lydia spoke up with a slight scoff. "The point of the game is to ask for different possible combinations. You should've asked if she had five or something."
"So in other words, you'll play for me." Malia shrugged, handing her deck of cards to the strawberry blonde which causes her to quickly shake her head.
"What--no! I'm not playing a kid's game to--" Her phone suddenly pinged, cutting her off from her sentence and she quickly looks down at her phone with a short gasp. "It worked."
"It's about time." Malia retorted, tossing the deck of cards to the side and moving to open the door.
"Wait." Scott quickly spoke, grabbing onto her hand to stop her from opening the door.
A moment of silence passes as the two glance toward the building in front of us. "I hear them, too." Malia nodded.
"Hear what?" I hesitantly ask, collecting Malia's cards from the seat to organize them.
"Heartbeats."
Allison frowned. "How many?"
Scott furrows his brows in concentration. "Ten?"
Malia quickly shook her head. "More."
Lydia shook her head with a sigh. "Are we breaking in, or not?"
"Not." Chris immediately answered. "The armory should be empty by now."
Malia scoffed. "We can take down a few hunters if we have to."
"Aren't these guys armed and they'll threaten to shoot us down as soon as they see us?" I ask. "They'd call Gerard and ruin the whole plan."
Chris shook his head. "We're way past that. We're dealing with a dozen well-armed hunters who have orders to kill you on sight." He emphasized before turning the ignition on.
However, Malia quickly reaches forward and turns the vehicle off, earning a look of confusion from Chris. "Gerard thinks we're gone. It's a good plan."
"It's our only plan." Lydia reminded.
"And it's not working." Chris answered with slight frustration.
"We can still do this." Allison stated with an assuring smile. "We can't let our only chance pass."
"Exactly. Let's vote." Malia suggested and rose her hand up along with Allison.
"Guys, we just need to give Liam, Phoebe, and Theo more time." Scott tried to explain but I raise a brow.
"Do we even have that much time?"
"We have ten minutes." Chris answered once he glanced down at the watch on his wrist. "Ten minutes before Gerard's people flag this vehicle. Once that happens, we'll be seen as a potential threat."
"Then what?"
"They'll pay us a visit."
"Lydia." Allison interrupted, causing us to turn to the girl who leaned close to the windshield. "You okay?"
"Yeah." Lydia muttered, nodding her head before looking forward once more. "I think so."
Chris shook his head, preparing to insert his car key once more. "We should call off this mission."
"Dad, Brett and Lori are gone, and Jiang and Tierney are still missing." Allison slightly raised her voice. "I'm sick and tired of Gerard always being one step ahead of us. We have to do this now."
"We're too exposed, Allison."
"You said we have ten minutes." Malia shrugged.
"Nine."
Phoebe's POV:
I glance down at the hunters quickly unholstering their pistols from their belts before I look over to Theo and Liam, seeing as they tiredly lean against the rock.
However, Theo sliced his claws against Liam's stomach which earned a loud growl to escape from his lips.
"Are you done?" Liam grunted in annoyance as Theo wiped his bloody nose with his sleeve. "Or should we keep going?"
"We gotta call for backup!" One of the hunters shouted and I start to smile.
"Sounds like it worked." I whisper as I approached the two. "Nice work."
Liam gestured to his torn maroon shirt with a scowl. "You ripped my t-shirt!"
"Yeah, you broke my nose. Twice." Theo panted with an eye roll. "It healed, you broke it again. Two times!"
I look to Liam and almost as if he read my thoughts, he gestured for me to do it.
I thrust my fist forward to collide with Theo's nose, causing him to let out a groan as he slid down against the rock.
"Make that three times." I innocently shrug before I crouch down to his level. "That's for calling me soft."
Olivia's POV:
Scott lets out a groan of frustration before unlocking his car door, causing Lydia to turn towards him in confusion. "What are you doing?"
"I'm gonna lure them away so we can get inside." Scott explained but Malia rolled her eyes, leaning forward to yank his hand off of the handle and lock the door. "We need a new plan."
"Not a dumb one." She harshly remarked.
"I'll bring the thermite charges." He suggested but I shook my head, shuffling the cards in my hands.
"We need them for the armory, genius." I reminded.
"The explosion will buy you time, but not enough to get in and out safely." Chris added.
"How about using the tunnels?" Malia asked.
"I mean, we could get underneath the building, but then there's the 'sneaking in undetected' we would have to worry about." Allison explained.
"The ventilation system?" Scott suggested.
"Same problem."
"Yeah...is this a bad time to say that after the whole 'being trapped underneath the nemeton with our parents' event, I'm not exactly a fan of tight spaces?" I ask, meeting everyone's unamused expressions along with Chris who pinched the bridge of his nose. "I mean, I can totally shove the fear down in a box. Forget what I said."
"Guys!" Lydia exclaimed, causing us to finally turn to her. "They're leaving."
And she was right. One by one, the parked SUVs in front of the facility began to drive toward the gates.
Phoebe's POV:
I carefully climb up the narrow stairs, meeting up with Theo and Liam who stood near the railing.
"Anything?" Theo asked but I shook my head.
"They called for backup but it's still only Nolan with the two hunters."
Liam scoffed. "It's been half an hour."
"You're the one who picked the abandoned zoo." Theo muttered. "The hell are we doing in this place, anyway?"
"Because it's like Mykonos." Theo tilted his head to the side in confusion, causing Liam to roll his eyes. "The Greek island. In the city, they built these long, narrow, winding streets that all meet up with each other. Invaders would get lost in them like they were in a maze trying to figure out which way to go."
I slowly nod. "Smart." I look over to Theo and see his amused expression.
"What? I like history."
"I'm impressed." Theo chuckled. "It's a good idea."
"Yeah, only if the invaders actually show up." He muttered.
However, the sounds of several engines approaching closer to the front of the structure cause us to turn, giving a clear view of an elderly man stepping out of the SUV along with dozens of the other hunters coming out with assault rifles.
"I think they just showed up." Theo muttered.
"I'm assuming that's Gerard?" I ask.
Theo simply nods but Liam held a hardened glare, seeing as Monroe walked up to Gerard's side. "We should go." I start to follow behind him but he paused, seeing as Liam stayed in his spot. "We're supposed to be decoys, not target practice. You still working on that anger?"
"I'm fine." Liam stated.
"Well, you can be angry at Nolan and stay alive. Come on." Theo tries to grab his arm but Liam yanks his shoulder away, causing him to roll his eyes. "Fine. Get caught."
As he storms off, I hesitantly glance between Liam and the darkened hall until I finally decided to split away from him and follow after Theo.
"You didn't have to be a jerk, you know." I speak up, causing Theo to turn away from where he tried to get a better view of the hunter's vehicles.
"It's called being honest." He remarked. "Besides, I'm surprised you didn't stay behind with him."
I furrow my brows in confusion. "Why's that?"
"I mean normally, you'd rather suffer instead of being alone with me." He snorted. "Looks like I'm warming up to you."
"Not even close." I cross my arms over my chest. "We might have worked together to beat the Ghost Riders but I'll never forget what you did to the others and what you almost did to me."
He gives a short nod in understanding. "You mean your sister's ex-girlfriend?"
My heart clenched. "Her name was Tracy. She was my friend and she sacrificed herself to protect me from you." I sternly emphasized. "You ruined me! I used to be capable of handling myself but ever since we defeated the Beast and the Dread Doctors, I can't help but think that I'm not enough to fill in Olivia's shoes as soon as she leaves and it's all your fault!"
He raised a brow. "Don't you think blaming me is a crutch to make you feel better?" He stated as he took several steps closer to stand in front of me, causing my heart to sink in discomfort. "You can blame me for killing the other chimeras all you want, but the only thing holding you back to get over that fear is yourself. Besides, you had opportunities to leave but you were too blinded by your stubbornness and rage."
"I'm not scared of you." I remark.
"Your heart rate says otherwise." He whispers before his attention snaps behind me. "Speaking of heart rate, your friend's over there just spiked but not out of fear. Come on." He says before gesturing for me to follow behind.
Allison's POV:
My dad quietly unlocks the door in front of us and pushed it open enough for my paintball gun to fit through. I close one eye as I look through the paintball gun's scope, carefully aiming at the camera lens looking towards our door, and pull the trigger.
The paint perfectly splatters against the camera lens and I push the door wider for all of us to step through.
Malia plops the unconscious hunter on the ground and Olivia melts his walkie-talkie in her hands with a grin, letting it drop next to him.
"The thermite charges will take care of the weapons." My dad carefully explained to Scott, Malia, and Olivia as he held up the duffle bag. "Just make sure you're clear before they detonate, okay?"
Olivia holds out her hands to grab the duffle bag but I shake my head no, giving her a knowing look. She glances down at her charred hands and bashfully shoves them into her pockets, watching as my dad hands the duffle bag to Scott.
"Be safe." I whisper as soon as the others split off to where they needed to go. "I love you."
She nodded, pressing a quick kiss against my cheek. "I love you too." She whispered before quickly following down the hall after where Scott and Malia went to.
I turn to walk to the other hallway towards the security room just in time to see my dad slam the back of his gun against the hunter's head to knock him unconscious.
"Shut the door." My dad instructed and I quietly close the door behind me before grabbing a stool to sit beside Lydia already watching the security cameras.
I watch as Scott, Malia, and Olivia pause just before they could enter the next hallway. Away from their view stood another hunter guarding the armory with a gun and Scott holds up one finger, silently telling Malia and Olivia about the hunter.
However, Malia rolled her eyes and she sprinted down the hall, causing the hunter to turn at the sound. He tries to aim his weapon at her but she grabs hold of his jacket and slammed him against the wall before throwing him across the hall.
The hunter looks up towards where our friends stood but Olivia frantically kicked his head with her boot, knocking him unconscious. "Oh, crap--"
"He's alive, it's okay!" Scott quickly assured.
I let out a sigh of relief, resting my head against Lydia's shoulder to watch them approach the door.
"Did you hear a gunshot?" Lydia suddenly asked and I look up, meeting her conflicted expression.
"No, I didn't hear anything." My dad answered, keeping his stare at the screen in front of us.
"Could it be another prediction?" I ask with concern.
She slowly nods. "I heard shell casings. I saw your windshield crack, and then I heard it shatter." She reluctantly answered, causing my dad to briefly turn away from the screen with his eyes widened. "I think you were right. We should've called this off."
My dad tries to push the lever to unlock the door for them to get through but Lydia grabbed his wrist. "We all have to get out of there." She added.
"Do that, and we lose our chance." My dad reminded.
"As much as I want this to work, I don't want to risk our friends dying." I state. "We shouldn't ignore Lydia's premonition. It's too risky. Come up with a plan B."
"Ten minutes ago, I would've agreed, but right now, we're in it, and we need to weigh the risk versus reward carefully." He emphasized, taking note of my discomfort. "If we stay, we could succeed. If we go, we know we won't get another chance. Since one risk is known, and the other unknown--"
"We go with the known." Lydia muttered in discomfort.
Olivia's POV:
The door clicks open and Scott didn't waste another second pulling open the door for us to step through the storage room where I expected to see crates stacked on top of one another filled with a variety of guns from the way Allison described it.
But...it was empty.
"Okay, where are all the guns?" Malia wondered as we glanced around the abandoned shelves and emptied crates.
"Are we sure we're in the right room?" I curiously ask.
"We are." Scott breathed out and I turn, meeting his worried expression. "They knew we were coming."
