Six

Olivia's POV:

"The trail's gone." Malia huffed in annoyance, seeing as Liam looked around in confusion.

"Uh, maybe he just stopped bleeding?" Scott suggested, taking note of Lori's worrisome expression.

"I think we should split up." Liam spoke up, causing my eyes to slightly widen. "Lori, Phoebe, and I go this way, you guys go that way."

"Or maybe we go in six directions?" Lori chimed in but I quickly shake my head.

"I think it's better if we stick together. Who knows, they could pick us off one by one and we wouldn't even know."

"Which is why we can only split off three and three." Phoebe interjected. "Even with those odds, it's still six against one."

"Not if we split up." Malia countered.

"I've been doing this the past three months without your help." Liam scoffed. "I think I can make a decision."

"Well, if you're deciding to do something stupid and die," Malia harshly remarked. "then go ahead."

"It's one hunter--one amateur," He emphasized. "--who doesn't know what they're doing!"

"Liam, I learned the hard way by rushing in without a plan." I sternly state. "We can't be risky."

"Liv, but the longer we wait, we'll be too late." Phoebe worriedly explained.

Malia groaned in annoyance before turning towards the alpha. "Scott?"

I follow her line of vision but to my surprise, Scott carefully wiped away the pile of leaves to reveal the indentation of a set of boot prints. "How the—"

"The hunter." Liam whispered under his breath.

Phoebe crouched down beside Scott with her brows furrowed. "He's covering his tracks." She muttered before carefully moving aside another layer of leaves, revealing another indentation of boot prints. "So is another."

"Two of them?" I worriedly ask.

Scott hesitantly shrugs. "Maybe more."

"How many hunters have you seen out here before?" Lori asked and Scott winced in remembrance.

"...A lot."

"Still wanna split up?" Malia muttered sarcastically but I nudge her arm with a stern look. "Well!"

"We can deal with it." Liam assured, unfazed at the footprints. "We just need to find Brett's trail."

"No, we don't." Lori sighed in relief and pointed to the stack of small rocks a couple of feet away from where she stood. "Rock balancing. Satomi taught us. It's him, and I know where he's going."

I scrunch my nose in disgust at the strong odor as we sped-walk through the underground tunnels by following behind Lori.

Even if I barely have been down here, it feels like the awful stench gets worse.

Lori slowed her pace in the middle of the pathway and crouched down to the floor, wiping her fingers across the small puddle of black liquid. "He's been poisoned."

"That's why he's not healing." Scott concluded.

"What if he only has a few hours to live?" She worriedly asked.

"Well, if we howl, we can find him." Liam tried to assure but Malia quickly shakes her head.

"That's too risky." She disagreed.

"Who cares about the risk? He could be dying!"

Phoebe walks a few steps forward and pointed to the smaller puddles leading ahead. "He's still moving which is a good sign."

"We just need time to think." Scott added.

I nod. "Yeah. As soon as we find him, I can heal him just enough to get him to Deaton."

She quickly shakes her head. "I need him to know that I'm here, that I'm coming for him.

"Lori's right." Liam whispered and turned towards the walkway. "He has to know we're here."

"Liam, wait!"

Liam's roars loudly echo down the tunnels, rattling the pipes around us which causes me to cover my ears with a grunt.

Once the echoes fell to silence, Lori lets out a stressful sigh. "Why didn't he answer?"

"Maybe-Maybe he didn't hear us." He stammered.

I scoff, rubbing the side of my ear with a pained expression. "I'll be surprised if he didn't. You practically burst my eardrum."

"Maybe he can't." Malia remarked.

Lori huffed and tries to walk once more but Scott quickly sprinted forward. "Lori, no!" She turns around in confusion but instantly something flies into Scott's stomach, forcing him against the pipe-embedded wall.

My eyes widen in horror at the sight of a spear and I quickly rush to his side. "Help me!" I urge.

Phoebe runs to his other side to help hold on to his chest as Malia, Lori, and Liam grab onto the spear. "One, two, three!"

The three supernaturals yank the spear out of his body and chuck it away as Phoebe and I carefully lower him to sit on the ground.

Malia hands me a cloth she ripped from the bottom half of her shirt and I quickly press it against the large wound to stop the bleeding, causing him to let out a groan of pain.

"They knew we were coming." He grunted.

"Don't talk." Malia hushed with a glare. "Just let Olivia heal you and let us figure this out."

I press my hand against his stomach, feeling the energy trickle across my arm and into my hand. "They've been a step ahead of us the whole time." I worriedly spoke, curiously eyeing the rusted spear and tripwire.

"I'm sorry, but I can't wait around." Lori impatiently glanced between us and the tunnel. "We have to go."

"We still have the numbers-- five to two. We're faster, stronger--"

"They're smarter." I interrupted. "Newbies that managed to set up a trap like this, Liam? Come on."

"I don't care who's smarter, or faster, or whatever. My brother's going to die!" Lori exclaimed.

"Something's not right." Scott shakily swallowed. "That arrow, the tripwire, the poison...these aren't amateurs."

"But they've never fought us before." Liam persisted.

"And you've never fought hunters, Liam. We need to stick together."

"I need to go." Lori insisted.

"No, you're not going alone." Liam shook his head. "I'll go with you."

"Me too." Phoebe spoke as she stood up from her spot. "We're going to bring Brett back."

"No, no, no. Phoebe, you don't know who they are or what they're capable of." I argued. "This isn't a creature from the shows you watch, these are hunters. You're not ready."

"I know who we are." Liam crouched down to Scott's level. "We never give up. Especially when it's someone innocent. When it's someone alone. When it's one of our friends."

"And Olivia, you're draining yourself already." Phoebe pointed out before digging through her pockets and pulling out a small vial filled with blood for us to see. "I poured some of your blood into this and other smaller vials like this one in case of an emergency in the car. Once we find Brett, I'll give those to him and it'll be enough to drive to the clinic."

I share a hesitant look with Scott before he gives a small nod with a sigh. "Okay, go." I say and Phoebe's eyes light up. "Go. All of you. We'll catch up."

Phoebe, Liam, and Lori continue their way down the tunnel but Malia stayed put.

"Go, Malia. Go with them." Scott muttered, trying to push himself to stand but immediately crumbles back down. "I just need a minute. Go."

"You just need to shut up!" Malia remarked as she crouched down to his level and placed a hand on his shoulder.

Phoebe's POV:

We skid to a stop at the split pathway, watching as Liam worriedly glanced back and forth. "Which way? There's gotta be something. Did he leave anything for you to find, like-like a signal, or more rocks?"

"I don't see anything..." Lori anxiously looked around. "I don't hear anything."

"We'll find something." I assure and pat her on her shoulder. "He's gonna be okay."

"How do you know?"

"'Cause-cause he's strong." Liam spoke up. "He's really strong. He's knocked me down on the lacrosse field more than once. Now, when I see him coming, I do everything I can to get the hell out of the way."

Lori wipes a tear away from her cheek with a sad smile. "Brett actually started playing lacrosse for me."

I tilt my head to the side in confusion. "For you?"

"I didn't have any friends at my old school. Devenford Prep needed lacrosse players, and Brett practiced all summer. And he got a scholarship and told them that they had to take me if they wanted him."

I place a hand on her arm with a small smile. "Liam and I will do whatever we can to make sure he's safe and sound, okay? We're going to find him and take him somewhere safe, I promise."

Lori starts to smile but in a matter of seconds her expression shifts into confusion as she looks around her surroundings.

"Do you smell that?" Liam whispered. "It's...it's sour."

"It smells like something's rotting." Lori confirmed.

My eyes widen in realization. "Poison."

She quickly nods her head, gesturing for us to run to the left pathway. "That's how we'll find him!"

Olivia's POV:

I tiredly move my hands away, wiping the beads of sweat that trickled down my forehead with my sleeve. "Okay...I need a breather." I whisper. "I'm barely halfway done sealing the wound."

"It's okay." Scott grunted. "Don't completely drain yourself."

"I still don't get it though." I say as I press my back against the wall and gesture to the bloodied spear. "How did we miss that?"

"W-We underestimated them." Scott panted.

"But how did they rig a trap that big with us down here in the tunnels?" Malia emphasized.

"They didn't." Scott muttered, brushing his fingers across the rusted tripwire. "They rigged it a long time ago."

"But we've been through these tunnels a hundred times."

"And whoever this hunter is, he's been through them a hundred more." Scott worriedly turned to us. "And he knew we were here. He was waiting for us, tracking us...he was prepared, and we weren't."

I reach for the spear, examining the nails lodged into it. "But I highly doubt anyone would come down here if they're used to the smell. Who would spend their free time here, anyway?"

"The question we should be asking is who was the last hunter we saw down here?" Malia muttered.

"Allison, her father," Scott listed off before his eyes widen in realization. "And Gerard."

"The trap wasn't lethal." Malia whispered.

"It slowed us down." I confirmed but immediately I drop the spear. "And split us up, the one thing we didn't want."

"He's planning something else, another trap." Scott added.

"And Phoebe, Liam, and Lori are walking right into it." Malia muttered, gesturing for me to go on the other side of Scott to help him up.

Allison's POV:

"So what exactly happens now with you and Liv?" Lydia questioned as she continued to count off the school lockers once more. "Forty-four, forty-five..."

"Well seeing as we're dealing with your chaos premonition, moving in together is most likely on pause." I chuckle.

"Is that what you convinced yourself?" Lydia snorted. "You're not scared?"

"Why would I be?"

"Well, it's a new step for you two. It's not some sort of sleepover, you know. Think of it as a trial run for when you guys are married."

My eyes widen in surprise. "Woah, woah, woah. Married? Hold on." I step in front of her to grab her shoulders. "That's a completely different story."

She raised a brow. "So you don't want to marry Olivia?"

"No! Of course I do, but not yet!" I exclaim. "We're starting college next month and I barely asked her to move in with me not too long ago. I'll admit, it's still a bit nerve-wracking for me that we're moving away from here and get to be together more often than usual so I'm sure she feels the same. Neither of us is in a rush."

"If you guys are still nervous, then why don't you guys practice?" She suggested. "I mean, you technically own the complex right? Olivia's stuff is already packed in her car with most of her stuff at the apartment so it'll be easy for her to move in with you."

"But what about my dad?"

Lydia crossed her arms with disbelief. "Allison, you're a badass twenty-year-old hunter. Don't tell me you're afraid to ask your dad if he's okay with Olivia moving in. You've told me before that he's barely at the apartment anyway!"

"True but he still lives there, Lydia." I say with a small smile. "He never moved out."

"But is still barely there!" She emphasized before she lets out a sigh. "Look, I care about you guys a ton and don't want either of you to get hurt. This can be a test run to show if you're ready."

I nervously bit my lip. "You think she would feel comfortable if I asked her?"

Lydia places her hands over mine and brings them down, giving them a small squeeze. "I think she wouldn't mind as long as she gets to be with you."

Suddenly someone bumps into my shoulder which causes me to stumble forward a bit.

"Sorry." The boy mumbled before he continued his quick pace.

However, Lydia quickly turned around. "Hey, sixty-eight!" She called, following after him and my eyes widen in recognition at the boy I tutored months ago. "Hey! Hey!"

"Nolan!" I called and he quickly turned around in surprise.

"Do you know anything about Brett?" Lydia quickly asked.

He tilted his head to the side in confusion. "Who?"

"Brett Talbot. He's a Lacrosse player for Devenford Prep but do you know what happened to him?" I explain but he slowly shook his head. "You haven't seen him around?"

"Brett Talbot." Lydia emphasized as she tightly gripped his wrists. "Ring any bells?"

"I don't know any Brett." He answered but his eyes narrow into curiosity as he eyed Lydia. "You're one of them, aren't you?"

"One of who?" Lydia asked in a whisper.

Nolan's eyes widen in surprise before he quickly backs away, continuing to make his way towards the exit without another word.

Phoebe's POV:

"They all look the same. Are you sure we're going the right way?" Lori questioned as we slowed our pace to catch our breaths.

"I'm positive. I've gotten lost down here before, more than once." Liam confidently stated. "Just follow the scent."

"I hate that scent." She sighed.

"Wait--I hear something." Liam held his hand out in front of us. "It sounds like..."

"A heartbeat." Lori finished for him and continued to run down the pathway which causes Liam and I to quickly follow behind.

She turns at the next intersection and sighs out in relief before sprinting to the corner where Brett weakly lies against the wall. "Brett!"

The black liquid smears were on each side of his face along with his nose still dripping liquid. His eyes were bloodshot red along with his skin practically yellow, indicating his life slowly slipping away.

"You found the rocks." He weakly asked and Lori frantically nodded with a smile.

"Yeah, I found the rocks."

I crouch down to his level and twist off the cap to the vial. "Drink this. It's enough to get you on your feet to make it to the car." I explain but he raises a brow. "Phoenix blood. It'll help with your healing."

He nods but Lori takes the vial from my hands to bring it to his lips. He downs the liquid in one shot, scrunching his nose in discomfort before letting out a sigh. "Thank you, Phoebe." He whispered before his eyes shift over behind me. "Liam."

I glance behind me, seeing the small smile on his face before he quickly grabs ahold of his arm to pull him to stand. "Hey, we're going to get you out of here."

"You're a dumbass for doing this." Brett grumbled under his breath with a grunt.

"Oh, is that your way of thanking me?" Liam sarcastically smiled.

"No, that's my way of calling you a dumbass." Brett muttered. "But...thanks."

Suddenly, a bright flash causes me to briefly cover my eyes which is soon enough followed by the sight of smoke encasing the end of the tunnel.

"They're coming." Lori worriedly spoke.

"Phoebe, get them out of here." Liam instructed, gesturing to the other side of the pathway. "I'll hold 'em off."

Abruptly, Liam holds on to his ears with a grunt, causing my eyes to widen. "But Liam--"

"Phoebe, you're the only other person that knows the ins and outs of the tunnels!" He interrupted and his eyes flashed yellow. "Go! Go now!"

I nod, wrapping Brett's arm around my shoulder and guiding them to the other pathway. "Let's go."
