Jupiter
He didn't know what compelled him on a chilly October morning to get into his car and drive forty miles East and arrive at the one place where he never thought he would step place in. but he did.
" Jupiter." Her voice came out soft. The boy next to her dropped her hands and stepped forward.
" Hi. I'm Jake." His eyes were bright. There was no jealousy or possessiveness, just curiosity.
" I'm Jupiter."
" I'll just leave you guys to talk," He went over and kissed Haley on the cheek before muttering about finishing a research paper.
" It's cold, isn't it?" He asked once they found a small cafe at the end of the block.
" Yeah. It is." She muttered.
" Hi, I'll have a vanilla latte and a hazelnut mocha."
" Can you change that vanilla latte to a chai with two pumps of hazelnut?"
The girl nodded and went to work.
" You don't like vanilla lattes anymore?"
Haley took a seat by the window, " No, I don't. People change and their taste matures over time." She fixed him with a hard look.
Something told him that she wasn't talking about coffee anymore.
Why was everything so hard when it came to you?
" I'm sorry about that night. I shouldn't have walked out on you like that."
Haley glanced up at him. " It's okay. It really is. I was so angry at the world for not letting me have my way. And for a long time after that. I hated you and Matt so much that I thought I would never be happy again. But after a while. I understood why you did what you did and I was so angry at myself for what I did to Matt. He was the innocent one in the whole situation."
" But," she fiddled with her thumbs, " Matt misses you a lot. A lot more than he would like to admit. Please you should go see him."
Jupiter leaned back, " I know."
Haley smiled at the girl as she placed down their drinks.
" I miss you."
Haley looked up, " You're so stupid."
Jupiter was taken aback at her bitter tone.
" You literally disappeared, you stopped even talking to your family. And instead of talking to them now. You drive like fifty miles to see a girl who you left six months ago."
He was quiet, he didn't know what to say. Everything she said was expected and true but why did it hurt so much?
" I know." He said softly. " I just wanted to say that-." I really did love you and I wished things could have been different. " I'm sorry and I just wanted to see you."
Haley smiled sadly, " Yeah. I wanted to see you too."
He slid off his seat, offer one more smile and turned to leave.
" Wait!" She called out.
He turned to face her, " Do you know what happens when meteors collide?"
He furrowed his brows, " What?"
" They break and over time, they rebuild themselves."
He smiled, the same words he left her with all those months ago. And it looked like they were finally rebuilding themselves.
