Under Attack
It was a cold day in Gotham and yet Evelyn still went to his grave with flowers in her hands. She made it her mission to visit Jason's resting place at least twice a week with a bundle of flowers to give him. She found that talking to him, even though he couldn't respond, made her feel closer to the boy. It helped her heal in a way she never thought she could.
"I can't stay long today Jason. I have some meetings at Rosier Tech today but I promise to come tomorrow to make up the time lost. I just wanted to drop off your flowers and give you an update. Tim has been doing wonderful as Robin. He isn't you nor is he Dick but he has really helped Bruce's violence tone down. Funny thing really, he has an intelligence similar to Bruce, a strategist and detective. I remember how similar you and Bruce were too. How both of you had this fire inside you, this determination to fight crime in Gotham. Bruce still has the fire burning inside him, I don't think it ever goes out. Maybe dies down but something always makes it flare up again. It was your death for the longest time and the flare up was bad. I thought Bruce might have died on patrol with all the injuries he came home with. I'm just glad Bruce calmed down and I hope you're proud of him too."
Evelyn set the flowers down next to his grave and placed a kiss on her fingertips. She then placed her hand on the headstone, a tear cascading down her face.
"I miss you Jason. I miss my little fighter who tried to steal hub caps off the Batmobile. I would give anything to bring you back, anything at all. I'm sorry I wasn't there, didn't see the signs. I just hope you're in a better place with people who love and cherish you. I know I love you very much and I pray you can feel that love, where ever you are. I have to go now but I'll be back tomorrow, I love you little solider." Evelyn wiped her face to rid herself of the tear stains and moved to rise.
Her hair stood on end as a chill went down her spine. She felt like she was being watched but when she looked around, no one was there. She wasn't stupid enough to go looking for trouble though so she walked back to her car and headed to the Rosier Technology building.

"Reports are coming in that the Joker is demanding one million dollars to defuse the 6 active bombs planted throughout the city. People are in a panic as they race to find a shelter strong enough to protect them. Without the bombs location though, it's difficult to tell where it's safe. Batman, Robin, Spoiler, Batgirl and Nightwing have been spotted racing throughout Gotham looking for the bombs and diffusing them. According to GCPD, five bombs have been found and deactivated, leaving one bomb left." Evelyn watched the tv in her office, Heidi sitting with her as they listened to the reporter.
Evelyn was typing away at her computer looking for all possible locations of the bomb. She had been sending Bruce and the others locations to check when she heard about the Joker's plans.
Bruce and Tim were quick to start searching after the threat went out, Barbara and Stephanie Brown not far behind. Steph worked closely with the bat team, her father being a criminal and Steph spoiling his plans to Batman, resulting in her father's capture and imprisonment. Impressed with her hero attitude, Bruce offered her a place on the team as Spoiler. Evelyn personally loved Steph's optimism and cheery attitude, something she hadn't seen since Dick left home.
Dick happened to be visiting Gotham to see Bruce and Evelyn when the call went out. He, of course, suited up and went out to help his home town. Evelyn texted him that he couldn't get hurt before seeing her as it was gentleman like. Dick just sent back a laughing emoji before going off to find the bombs.
"Do you think they'll find the last bomb in time Miss Rosier?" Evelyn looked to Heidi and nodded. She was close to pin pointing the last bombs location. She was using camera feed to watch the Joker's movements to see where he went two night ago when he planted the bombs.
She just managed to find the Joker again when Evelyn stiffened. He was inside Gotham's business district, but more specifically at Rosier Technology. He planted a bomb in her building.
"Heidi?" Evelyn slowly spoke to the nervous blonde. She didn't want to scary Heidi into freezing up. Not when she needed Heidi to do something for her.
"Yes Miss Rosier?"
"Please pull the fire alarm and exit the building." Heidi sent a confused look to her boss but got up to pull the alarm. A sharp ringing sounded as an automatic voice asked everyone to calmly leave the building.
"Are you coming Miss Rosier?" Heidi asked as she opened Evelyn's office door. Evelyn smiled and nodded before watching Heidi leave. Evelyn was quick to pull up all the camera feed in her building to locate the bomb. According to Bruce and the others, each bomb had a different set time to go off. Each one five minutes after the other. The last one that Tim found was set to go off two minutes ago leaving three minutes left until a possible explosion.
Evelyn felt her phone buzz next to her as she continued to look for the bomb. Keeping her eyes on the screen, Evelyn reached over and answered the phone, placing it on speaker.
"What's wrong?" Bruce questioned as soon as Evelyn answered.
"Bomb's here at Rosier Tech. Pulled the alarm to get everyone out."
"Are you out?" Inquired Bruce. Evelyn heard a sharp ping before more noise filtered through the call. She was now on call with Bruce, Tim, Barbara, Steph and Dick.
"No."
"Get out of the building Evelyn."
"Wait what?" Dick questioned.
"What's going on?" Steph said simultaneously.
Evelyn continued to look for the device before finally seeing it in the basement. Evelyn had to hand it to the Joker, he was smart. He knew that the building would collapse if the support was taken out. The basement was the lowest level and if that exploded the rest of Rosier Tech was doomed.
"Found it."
"Get. Out. Now." Bruce sternly spoke. Evelyn could tell he was pissed but Evelyn had more concerns. Rosier Tech was a tall building, if it fell over it could potentially kill a lot of people. She needed to disable the bomb.
"I'm five minutes out." Dick said, his breath starting to come out heavy. He was racing to reach Evelyn and get her out. He couldn't handle losing her.
"I'm four." Tim says.
"I'm seven, still at the last sight helping the civilians." Barbara said.
"I'm with GCPD, I'm not close to Rosier." Steph said in worry. She hoped someone could get to her in time.
"I'm coming Evelyn. I'll disable the bomb just get out of the building."
Evelyn was already racing down to the basement when Bruce said that.
———
Evelyn reached the bomb, the metal device stuck to a large pipe. A red countdown flashed before her, one minute left until detonating. Wires poked out from all over the device and Evelyn wondered how the others dismantled this.
"What wire?" Evelyn said into the phone. No one responded causing Evelyn to look down. Her phone flashed a warning sign to her. She had no signal due to the bombs interference.
"Okay, um. Just follow the wires, you got this." Evelyn quietly hyped herself as nerves bubbled in her stomach. She thought Bruce and the others would still be on the call to help her deactivate it. She didn't realize the bombs wavelengths would block her phones signal. She should have brought her Apollo earpiece to work.
Evelyn watched the number tick down before her. There was thirty seconds left until it went off. Evelyn was still following the wires when a crash sounded from behind her.
Evelyn whipped around expecting to see Bruce as Batman but instead saw a large muscled man approach her. He wore a tight black t-shirt, cargo pants and a matching brown jacket. He had gun holsters, each with guns, on both his thighs and a utility belt similar to Batman's and Robin's. The most defining feature of the man was his red mask. It completely covered his face with only the area in front of his eyes being a white cloth, presumably so the man could see.
"Move." The man spoke. His voice sounded familiar yet so foreign to Evelyn's ears.
"Why?" Evelyn said back her finger still tracing the wires.
"So I can disarm it." Evelyn didn't move. She had never seen the man before and he could just set the bomb off early. Looking to see the timer of the bomb, Evelyn had ten seconds left before it exploded. She didn't know the man but deep down she felt like she could trust him, something about him just made sense.
Evelyn stepped to the side and the man moved to cut a wire. The seconds ticked down all the way to three before the man snipped a blue wire. The timer stopped and Evelyn felt a breath leave her. He stopped it.
"Thank you." The man just looked at her before turning and walking away. He didn't say anything just left the woman standing there, baffled at who this man was.
Evelyn stood still for a moment longer before rushing to follow the man, if just to get his name but he was gone. Evelyn couldn't find him anywhere in the basement or main floor.
"Move!" Evelyn turned to see Batman rushing towards her. GCPD was blocking people from coming into the building and Bruce was not having it.
She stood in the main lobby near the stairwell to the basement as Bruce crashed into her.
"What were you thinking! You could have gotten blown up! You didn't answer our calls or messages!" Bruce took hold of Evelyn and hugged her close to his chest. Thankfully the stairwell was shadowed enough that the people outside the doors couldn't see Bruce hugging her. The last thing they need was pictures of Batman hugging Evelyn Rosier and criminals going after her.
Dick was close behind Bruce, Nightwing suit on and escrima sticks on his back. Dick was quickly to push Bruce away and hug Evelyn as tightly as he could.
"I was thinking about all the people who might have dead if that bomb went off. The bomb blocked my phones signal, otherwise I would have answered and as you can see, I'm fine. The bomb is dismantled and taken care of." Dick let Evelyn go and moved back a step so Bruce could talk to Evelyn.
"How'd you know what wire to cut?" Evelyn looked to Bruce before shaking her head.
"I didn't. Some guy in a red mask came in and cut it. I tried finding him but he's gone." Bruce and Dick shared a puzzled look. Neither of them had heard of a red masked hero in Gotham or anywhere near.
"They just dismantled the bomb?" Dick questioned again.
"Yea, just cut it and left. He didn't even say anything, just told me to move." Evelyn recounted the man's details and movements to Bruce while Dick went to check out the bomb.
"Bruce, the masked man. Something about him was familiar." Evelyn whispered to Bruce as GCPD walked throughout the building, checking for more bombs.
"Have you met him before?" Bruce asked back.
"Maybe without the mask but I have no clue who he is." Bruce nodded and just pulled Evelyn close to him. To anyone else it would seem they were discussing what happened but Bruce just wanted Evelyn close to him.
He would never tell her but he was absolutely terrified she was going to die. He was worried about failing, again. He could only calm down when he saw her safe and sound. He just wished he could have thanked the masked hero.
