Red Hood
Evelyn was back at Jason's grave telling him all that had recently happened. It had been a hectic few weeks with Cassandra Cain joining the family. Bruce had managed to figure out that Cassandra had the same training as him with the League of Assassins. He found out from Talia Al Ghul, daughter to Ra's Al Ghul, that Cassandra had left the island to kill the Joker as he recently caused problems for the league. She promised not to tell Shiva, Cassandra's mother, at Bruce's request.
Evelyn was pissed for a few days after finding out about the call. Everyone knew about Talia's obsession with Bruce and her unyielding attempts at getting Bruce to love her. Bruce constantly had to remind Evelyn that he wasn't interested in the assassin, shared past or not, he loved Evelyn and her alone. It helped ease Evelyn's sour mood but hints of it could still be found in her witty remarks and sharp quips towards Bruce. Bruce just thought her jealous was extremely attractive and found himself wishing she was jealous more.
"So now we have Cassandra as Orphan. She lives in the manor with us and it's... difficult. She can't speak, Shiva removed her vocal cords, so it's hard to communicate with her. But I recently started learning sign language with her so we can talk. I think it's important for Cassandra to be able to express herself as she was trained not too. She needs to understand that it's okay to show her emotions— that she doesn't need to hide anymore. It's a work in progress though. You would like her, she's a fierce fighter and even Bruce wonders is he could take her in a fight. I hope we never find out." Evelyn chuckled softly as she rubbed the flower petal between her fingers.
She had been sitting at Jason's grave for the last hour as she hadn't been able to talk to him recently. She had a lot to catch him up on.
"He your son?" Evelyn turned to see the red hooded man. He wore a similar outfit to the one he wore when he saved her but the shirt was gray instead of black. His holsters didn't have any guns in them though.
"I uh, I saw him as one. He was a light in one of my dark moments. The other being when he passed. I don't think I've ever struggled so much in my life. Not even when my own father died did I mourn as much as when I did with Jason. He was my little solider. The boy who never ran from a fight and came home bruised and bleeding but smiling. He had a fire that nothing could extinguish and I loved that about him. I miss him every day from morning to night." Evelyn felt a sorrowful smile rest on her face. It felt nice to talk about her son in such a bright light to someone who never knew him. She felt like it kept the memory of him alive.
"Sounds like he was real important to you." Evelyn nodded in agreement. She was facing the grave and the man stood behind her. She felt safe in his presence and didn't think to turn around to see the gun he was pointing at her head.
He hid his guns in his waistband so Evelyn wouldn't see them. He had been aiming at her the whole time she unknowingly talked about him. His finger rested on the trigger but he couldn't find the courage to pull it.
Jason wanted to hate the woman before him. He wanted to hate that she became his mother when his own passed. He wanted to hate that she came to his grave whenever she could to drop off flowers and talk to him. He wanted to hate the love he had for her.
Hearing her say she saw him as a son broke something in him. He had wanted to hear those words from her for so long and Ra's used that to his advantage, twisting his view on Evelyn and Bruce.
He told Jason that Evelyn never loved him, never cared for him the way he cared for her. She would never see Jason as her own and that fueled his hatred. He gave his love to the woman and she would never give it back to him.
Bruce was no better. He didn't avenge Jason's death and let the Joker keep breathing. He knew that if Dick died Bruce would have broken all his moral codes to avenge him. Because Bruce loved Dick. Something Jason would never have from the man he viewed as a father.
He hated that he wasn't enough for their love. He hated them for not accepting him and fighting for him. He hated that he still didn't want to kill either of them.
His finger lifted from the trigger.
"Get down!" Evelyn instantly went low to the ground. She knew Bruce was coming to see her at Jason's grave but she wasn't expecting to be yelled at.
Evelyn twisted her head to see Bruce tackle the red hooded man. Both men fought on the ground, rolling and twisting around the other. Evelyn moved back, away from the fighting men. She dug through her work bag and found one of her gadgets for Batman. It was a simple taser design but packed a big electrical punch.
"Bruce!" Evelyn yelled as she threw the taser. Bruce managed to catch it and tased the man in his side. The hooded man yelled in pain and pushed Bruce off of him. Both stood up and got into a fighting stance facing each other.
"Stop! Please stop it!" Evelyn pleaded from next to Jason grave. She was stupid enough to approach and potentially put herself or Bruce into danger. She was fine right where she was and could vocalize her thoughts loud enough to reach their ears.
"You saved me from the bomb. Why... Why save me if you could have just let me die?" Evelyn pointed her question towards the hooded man. Bruce didn't attack but stayed at the ready to attack the man should he make a move towards Evelyn or himself.
"Couldn't watch you blow up. Not by the Joker. Not when you both have already experienced losing a family member to him. Wouldn't be as impactful." Evelyn and Bruce froze at how much the man knew. No one besides Tim had ever known about the Joker killing Jason and Evelyn was sure to upgrade the bat caves cyber security. No way could someone hack into the system again, not unless it was one of the bat team members.
"How do you know...?" The red hooded man stood straight and took a step back. He was retreating from the fight but why?
"Guess I'm running from my fight now, huh? Gotta refuel my fire." The hooded man turned and ran away. Evelyn thought Bruce would maybe follow but he just watched him go. Bruce waited until the man was out of view before turning to Evelyn.
"Are you okay? He's a new criminal I've been trying to catch. He reminds me of Jason with his fighting style." Evelyn felt the world crash into her. She knew the man was familiar when she first met him but couldn't figure out why. She never considered that she knew the man as a boy and he had grown.
But how could she have guessed the truth? Not many people who die come back to life.
"It is Jason."
