Dick Grayson
It was date night, Bruce having decided to take Evelyn to the circus. Apparently, Haley's circus was one of the best traveling circuses around, with the main attraction being the Flying Graysons. A family of three that performed amazing trapeze tricks. Evelyn was very excited to see the show which would start in an hour.
"Bruce! Let's go to the fortune teller! I've always wanted to try it!" Bruce let out a little laugh before walking arm and arm with Evelyn towards the caravan.
"You do realize it's fake, right? People can't actually see the future." Bruce said, amused at Evelyn's excitement.
"Yes, because a flying bat hero is also unheard of. Not to mention the alien superhero in another city that can withstand bullets and bombs. Oh and the Amazon princess who looks amazing in a body suit. Completely unimaginable." Evelyn sarcastically responded, pushing open the fortune tellers caravan door. Bruce let out a chuckle before following Evelyn inside.
Chimes sounded as a breeze rushed in, the scent of lemon and rosemary reaching Evelyn's nose.
"Come in, take a seat, let's dive into your near future." A woman spoke, a dry wisp interwoven into her speech. Purple fabric hung over her face, only allowing her gold shaded eyes to be seen. Golden chains were attached to her head piece, chiming whenever her head moved.
"Give me your hands and let's see what's in store." The fortune teller reached across the table towards Evelyn, completely ignoring Bruce. Evelyn placed her hands upon the fortune tellers, staring as she patiently waited.
"I see a blooming relationship, one that will someday blossom. There is also a grave darkness, one of worry and despair clouding over your future. Yet beams of light to ease the terror, one such light shall soon shine down upon you." The fortune teller let go of Evelyn's hands, instead holding her palm up to Bruce.
Bruce let out a scoff before reaching for her hand.
"No, no. Payment." The teller harshly demanded. Evelyn covered her mouth at Bruce's shocked face as a laugh tried to escape. Bruce let out a grumble before handing the teller a twenty and taking Evelyn's hand.
"The circus is starting soon, let's get a seat." Evelyn laughed as Bruce angrily stormed towards the red and white tent.

It was time for the flying Graysons and Evelyn was sitting at the edge of her seat. She couldn't wait to see the family perform their tricks and showcase the beautiful art of trapeze.
The lights dimmed as spotlights shun into the top platforms. The drop made Evelyn feel a little sick but the family were professionals, having done this a multitude of times, Evelyn felt her worry was misplaced.
First went the little boy, he wore a blue tight suit with a white and blue mask covering the upper half of his face. Black hair was styled around his head. She reminded him of Bruce when he was younger according to those old newspapers and photos.
The mother followed on another trapeze, the suit the same as her son's but with an extra piece of fabric hanging from her hips, forming a skirt.
The mother launched into the air, completing a flip before grabbing on to the awaiting husband's arms. Both swung back towards the platform before pushing off towards their son. Evelyn felt her stomach drop as the mother and father started falling further than before. Evelyn felt time slow as the young boy screamed for his parents as they fell further and further to the ground.
Evelyn looked away and heard the loud crunch of a body being broken in hundreds of places. Evelyn felt her eyes tear up at the scene that just occurred, Bruce wrapping his arms around her and pressing her face into his chest. Evelyn clutched his shift as she tried to forget the image of the falling parents. How Bruce managed to handle this fighting crime, Evelyn didn't know. She preferred to stay behind the screen where she didn't have to see the gruesome sights.
"The cops are coming, I'm going to talk to Gordon, see what I can find out." Bruce spoke quietly after five minutes of just holding Evelyn. Evelyn nodded and let go of Bruce moving away from his warm chest. She felt Bruce linger for a moment longer before departing towards Gordon, his hands stuffed into his pants pockets.
Evelyn sat in the stands, waiting as she refused to look at the bodies, covered or not. She knew Bruce was busy with Gordon and so she casually looked around, skipping over the white sheet, to see more of the circus tent. It looked pretty normal, stands around a sand pit with a barrier separating the two. Deciding that nothing was unusual looking, Evelyn headed outside to the chill air. The sun was disappeared behind the horizon now and the stars twinned above her. This far away from Gotham allowed her to see the constellations in the sky as the air was without pollution.
Looking to her left Evelyn saw a couple of wooden crates and a young boy sitting on top. It was the son of the parents, Richard Grayson if Evelyn remembered his name correctly. Evelyn, knowing what it feels like to be parentless, approached the boy with a gently smile.
"Hello, mind if I sit here?" Evelyn spoke quietly, her hand gesturing towards the spot next to the boy. Not saying a word, the boy nodded his head a single time, keeping his eyes glued to his feet.
"My name's Evelyn. I live in Gotham. What's your name?" Evelyn asked. She wished to comfort the child, knowing the toll it took on their soul. She couldn't imagine losing her whole family in one night though. She, at least, had a grandmother to watch her and her mom was alive after her dad passed, just wasn't a mother anymore to Evelyn.
Evelyn thought the boy wouldn't respond, but in a small soft voice came a reply, "Richard, but people call me Dick." Evelyn let out a small smile before sticking her hand out for Dick to shake.
"Nice to meet you Dick, I like your bear." Evelyn motioned to the stuffed fuzzy brown bear next to the boy.
"Thanks, mom got it for me." Evelyn froze at the comment, not knowing what to say. Dick reached out to it and pulled it close to his chest.
"Does it have a name?" Dick shook his head no.
"What about... Bear?" Dick sent a confused look.
"You want to name the stuffed bear... Bear?" Evelyn nodded her head.
"That makes the most sense right?" Evelyn sent a smile towards Dick.
"I suppose, but then wouldn't we call people humans instead of by their names? Or pets by their scientific species?" Dick questioned back, his attention now on Evelyn's face. Evelyn was confused on how she managed to get the boy to open up but went along with it anyways.
"Well, maybe we should start!" Evelyn felt her smile widen as Dick wore a small toothy grin. Footsteps approached from in behind the two, coming from the tent and causing both heads to look towards the noise.
"Hey Evelyn, can I talk to you?" Bruce sent a small smile and wave towards Dick before walking away with Evelyn nodding in agreement. She sent Dick a sweet smile before hopping off the crates and approaching a thinking Bruce.
"What's happened?" Evelyn quickly questioned when both were out of Dick's ear shot.
"Gordon thinks the line was tampered with. The parents were murdered, he has no clue who did it though. I'll look into it at home, but that's not what I wanted to talk about." Evelyn sent a confused look towards a, dare she say it, nervous looking Bruce.
"Whatever it is, I can handle it."
"He has no other family, the circus can't keep him here. Gordon wants to put him into foster care here in Gotham but..." Evelyn let out a sigh, understanding where Bruce was going. The foster care in Gotham was littered with kidnappings, malnourished children, and little care. Not a place Evelyn would wish for any child to go to. Bruce was working on getting it fixed but after his disappearance had trouble getting it back to the way it once was.
"What if we adopted him?" Evelyn froze at that. Bruce and her? Adopt an eleven year old child who just lost his parents?
"I know it's a lot to ask, and I understand if you are unsure. But, Evelyn, we know what it's like to be Dick. I lost my parents and had no other caregiver besides Alfred. I went down a road that I don't want Dick to go down, not if I can stop it. I want to help him." Evelyn slowly looked up towards Bruce's face. His eyes were scanning her face, looking for an answer while his hands fiddled with her own, nervous for her response.
"We."
"What?" Bruce froze at Evelyn's answer, not understanding it for a moment.
"We will stop Dick from going down that road of vengeance. Let's do it." Bruce felt a breath leave him in relief, Evelyn wasn't against taking Dick in under their care, not that he doubted she wouldn't want to help but to be a legal guardian is a lot to ask of someone. Especially when that someone just happens to be your girlfriend of a month.
"Yes, I say we do it. We can help Dick, Bruce. We can help him see that his life isn't over, not yet." Evelyn stood on her toes, circling her arms around Bruce's neck. "I am so proud of you for taking on this responsibility, Bruce. Dick is in good hands, I just know it." Bruce wrapped his arms around Evelyn's waist, a relieved smile on his lips.
"Dick is in both our hands, Evelyn. I couldn't ask anyone else to help me with this responsibility." Evelyn let out a teary smile as she tightened her arms around Bruce.
While the situation was unfortunate and less than ideal, Evelyn was getting another person to love and she couldn't wait.
