A Sick Jason
Evelyn watched as Bruce and Jason argued. Jason was suited up as Robin but Evelyn was more focused on his runny red nose and fogged over eyes. Jason was terribly sick and he still wanted to go out on patrol with Bruce.
Alfred and Evelyn both voiced their concerns at Jason going out. The cold Gotham air wouldn't help his nose and Jason couldn't even focus with the head cold he had. Evelyn even offered to make Jason some soup and tea but Jason declined saying he wouldn't have time to eat or drink before patrol.
"You aren't going. You're sick." Bruce said. His arms were crossed and cowl was on. A flat expression on his face as he told Jason, once again, that he couldn't go.
"I know I'm sick! I'm fine though and can still patrol with you! You need me!"
"I need you healthy and safe. Neither of those things will happen if you get hurt on patrol because of this illness." Bruce countered Jason and moved to get into the Batmobile. Jason let out a yell of frustration as he moved to change.
Evelyn had brought down some fuzzy pajama pants and a thick crew neck for him to change into. She even included the little toy solider fuzzy socks for him to put on. They were his favorite as they reminded him of the blanket Evelyn gave him.
"He just wants you to take a break Jason. You can't get better if you're constantly pushing your body. Your immune system can handle the stress." Evelyn gently said as she waited for Jason to finish changing. All she got was silence in reply.
Evelyn sighed as she moved to head upstairs. She had Alfred make some chicken noodle soup for Jason to eat as Alfred's soup cured all. Evelyn would know, she ate his soups at least once a week to feel better.
"I just don't get why he won't let me go. He gets sick and still goes!" Jason said as he followed behind Evelyn. He was dressed in the plaid pants and red crewneck. The gray solider socks really added to the 'I'm having a crisis because of a stupid cold' look.
"He doesn't always. Alfred and I won't let him go sometimes when it gets bad. It's okay to need a break Jason. Even heroes need time off." Evelyn wisely said. She could see the toll of fighting crime wear into Bruce and wanted Jason to see there was more in life than fighting crime.
No matter how cool it is.
"Where are you going?" Jason finally asked. He was wondering why Evelyn didn't stay in the cave to help Bruce patrol. She usually was always tapping away at the computer while they were out fighting Gothams criminals.
"With you. Alfred made soup and then I thought we could watch a movie together. If you wanted to, of course." Evelyn said casually. She didn't want Jason to feel like he didn't have a choice, especially after his fight with Bruce.
"You aren't going to help Bruce?" Evelyn shook her head no as the two walked into the dining room. The table set for two as bowls of soup waited for them.
"No, you need me right now." Jason felt a smile on his face at Evelyn's words. He had always admired Evelyn's caring nature and calming presence. He enjoyed being around her and found himself wishing she was his mother instead of Catherine Todd. All Catherine did was black out and get high. In the off chance she wasn't doing that, she was found fighting with Willis Todd, Jason's father.
"Thanks." Evelyn smiled and ate her soup in silence with Jason next to her.

"Here, I brought you some tissues, a blanket and a warm cup of tea. Hopefully this will help the cold and sore throat." Jason smiled in gratitude as Evelyn deposited all the items she had in her arms. Jason was quick to wrap up in the blanket and visibly melted into the warmth of the gray fuzziness.
"Comfy?"
"Very." Evelyn laughed as she sat next to him. She had brought an extra blanket for her to use and bundled up in it. This one wasn't as fuzzy as Jason's but she would make do.
"Alfred should be coming up with some medicine for you. Do not complain, you are taking it." Evelyn shut Jason down before he could even speak about his hatred for medicine. He absolutely loathed the taste of artificial grape and that's all they had.
"How about bullet train? I know you like that one." Jason silently nodded in agreement. It was his favorite movie as he enjoyed watching thrills and explosives just happened to be something he found interesting. Evelyn didn't know how to feel about Jason's obsession with bombs but she figured he didn't exactly have a normal childhood. It made sense he wouldn't have a normal child obsession like with dinosaurs or cars.
"What are we watching?" Evelyn turned to see Bruce in normal clothes with both a blanket and medicine in hand. Did he skip patrol tonight to be with Jason?
If Evelyn wasn't in love with Bruce before she sure as hell was now.
"What about patrol?" Jason questioned in annoyance. Evelyn arched a brow at his attitude and shared a look with Bruce. What a sassy young man.
"Figured Gotham could survive one night without me. Besides, you need me more right now." Bruce said as he settled down on Jason's other side. He handed the medicine to Jason and Evelyn cleared her throat as she watched Jason just swirl the medicine around in the cap.
"Fine." Jason says and downs the disgusting liquid in one go. His face scrunched together as he took a sip of tea to clear out the taste. Evelyn nudged his shoulder and sent a teasing smile.
"What a big boy you are, taking your medicine and not spitting it out." Bruce barked out a laugh as Jason sent a glare to Evelyn. Evelyn just smirked back towards the boy.
Evelyn pressed play on the movie and snuggled into the chair. Jason was nestled tightly in between Bruce and Evelyn's bodies and he realized he didn't want to ever leave. He had the two people who meant the most to him surrounding him with nothing but love and affection in their eyes. It was something he never got to have with his real family. It made him wonder if family was truly defined by blood or if it could be defined by choice.
His choice would be Bruce and Evelyn as his family. Alfred too even, he helped Jason more than anyone else and he was a butler. It made Jason sad to see now how much love he was lacking from his parents. Yet he found that love with Bruce, Evelyn and Alfred and he found it in tenfold.
Looking towards Evelyn and then Bruce, Jason smiled as he finally understood what a good family was. Even if they did fight crime in silly suits and deep voices.
"Thanks for staying." Evelyn turned to look at Jason and pressed a soft kiss to the top of his head. Bruce sent a smile and pulled the boy into his side. Sick or not, Bruce wanted Jason to know he was here for him. Bruce would deal with getting sick later. Right now all that mattered was Jason.
"Any time Jason, any time."
