Wyatt Pt. 2

Okay, here's the other idea as promised. Hope you like it as much as the other one :)

The first time Wyatt hears the word 'baby', he doesn't think much of it. Scott comes home from work one day, bright eyed and with an even brighter smile, gushing about how his sister is going to have a baby. "I'm gonna be an uncle, Mitchy! Lauren's having a baby."

The second time he hears the word is a few weeks later when Scott comes home carrying several shopping bags full of baby clothes. He goes on and on about all the things he's bought and then shows them all to Mitch, who's sitting with a fond smile splashed across his face at Scott's excitement.

A few months later Scott and Mitch go away for three whole days... days in which Wyatt spends alternating between missing his humans and relishing in the peace and quiet. Plus, having the giant bed all to himself was pretty nice most of the time.

When they come back is when he begins to hear the word all the time.

Scott tells Mitch he wants to have a baby. A couple weeks later Scott tells Mitch he thinks he found the perfect surrogate to carry their baby. Some more weeks after that Mitch hangs up the phone, jumps into Scott's lap and screams at him that they're going to have a baby.

The baby word comes up almost daily after that.

Wyatt doesn't know what a baby is, but between his human's gushing over a blurry picture of a blob and turning the quiet room down the hall from their bedroom into a construction zone, he already hates whatever it is.

-------

As it turns out, a baby is a little human being, which his humans introduce to him as Finley, tucked away inside a little purple blanket in Mitch's arms. Mitch looks like he's glowing, while looking fondly down at the bundle in his arms and Scott has one arm curled around Mitch's waist, his other hand brushing over the little hat covering the baby's head. Wyatt is curious, thinks it's peaceful and innocent enough, too small to hurt him, until it starts to scream, face turning red.

Mitch shushes her, bouncing the bundle up and down gently while Scott rummages through the diaper bag over his shoulder before disappearing into the kitchen with a bottle in hand.

Wyatt takes off, running into the bedroom and hiding under the bed. Now, he's certain, he doesn't like that baby in his house.

-------

The baby is incredibly annoying, Wyatt decides, with all its screaming and crying at all hours of the night. It also doesn't help that his humans have decided to let it invade their bedroom, more specifically where he likes to sleep. Not to mention the thing takes up all of Scott and Mitch's time these days. Wyatt isn't jealous, per se, he just wants things to go back to the way it was... just him and his two humans.

The baby kind of makes that impossible.

-------

Wyatt sits in the door way of what his humans keep calling a nursery. Scott is inside with the little human cradled in his arms. He's holding her close to his chest, rocking gently in a rocking chair next to the crib and singing softly in her ear. Wyatt wonders why Finley gets more kitty cuddles than he does. He jumps onto Scott's knee and walks carefully up his thigh until he's close enough to raise himself up on his hind legs and rests his front paws on the little human's stomach.

"Hey," Scott scolds softly, pushing one hand against Wyatt's chest to shoo him away. "None of that babes, you'll wake her."

He meows, staring up at him as Scott stands up and places Finley in her crib, before jumping up onto the table beside him. Wyatt leans forward, paws on the edge of the crib to peer inside before jumping down, only for Scott to snag him before he lands on the mattress. Scott tucks him against his chest with one arm and brushes his fingers through the short hair on Finley's head with the other hand. "Sweetest dreams, my baby." He coos at her softly.

Wyatt reaches out for Scott's other hand as he brings it over to pet down the length of his back and presses a soft kiss between his ears.

"And you, my boy, let's get back to bed."

He purrs as Scott cradles him, making the short trip back to the bedroom where Mitch must've already fallen back to sleep. He purrs even louder when Scott crawls into bed and Mitch turns to face them, petting once down his back before slipping his arm around Scott's waist to pull himself closer to them.

He's won, he thinks, now that the baby has her own room and Wyatt has gone back to only sharing the bedroom with his favorite humans.

-------

Finley is older and Wyatt hates her even more now. She's starting to crawl, all on her own, and she has an annoying fascination with grabbing his tail. In fact, she has an annoying fascination with him period, always grabbing at him and pulling at his curly hair and tugging his tail and trying to touch him with her sticky fingers.

Wyatt is usually faster than her, can run away before Finley can actually get him, and if he's not, he's small enough that he can squirm out of the little human's arms before too much damage is done to him.

This just happens to be one of those times where Finley catches him off guard and wraps her little fingers around Wyatt's tail. Wyatt startles and tries to run, but the little human's grip is tight on his fur.

"Hey, Fin," Mitch scolds, coming to Wyatt's rescue. Mitch manages to get the girl's fingers out of Wyatt's fur and he runs across the room to hide under the coffee table, where Finley can't reach him. "We don't pull on the kitty's fur," Wyatt hears Mitch say softly as he scoops Finley into his arms.

Wyatt scoots backwards, watching Mitch's feet get closer and closer, before he drops to sit cross-legged on the floor, almost like the way he used to when Wyatt was afraid of Scott.

Mitch drums his fingers on the floor and Wyatt watches them intently, wants to reach out and play with him and then, "Come here Wy," he whispers. "Come see me."

He sees Mitch's knee bounce and hears Finley giggle loudly as she pokes her head out from under the coffee table. Finley reaches out for him and he flinches away from the small hand at the same time Mitch grabs it and pulls it back.

"We have to be gentle," Mitch whispers into Finley's ear, pressing a kiss to the side of her chubby cheek. He reaches out with his free hand and Wyatt allows Mitch to pull him out from under the coffee table before sliding his hand down the length of his back. "See? Gentle, baby."

Wyatt watches then, as Mitch shifts Finley from his knee to where his legs are crossed so that she's slightly closer. He watches as Mitch takes one of her small human hands into his much bigger one and reaches them both out to him. Wyatt wants to run and hide, but he trusts Mitch, so he stays put, stands his ground.

Both hands glide through his fur gently... once, twice, three times before it elicits a purr from Wyatt and a gleeful squeal from Finley.

The next time Finley gets her grubby little hands on Wyatt, she isn't as gentle as he would like, but it's not terrible.

-------

Mitch is a complete mess when he comes storming back into the bedroom in the middle of the night with a screaming, squirming Finley in his arms. A sleepy Scott bolts upright, causing Wyatt to tumble off his chest and into his lap.

"Scott, something's wrong," Mitch states frantically, walking around to Scott's side of the bed.

Scott sighs, rubbing a hand over his tired face. "She's probably just cranky-"

"She's not just cranky, something's wrong, Scott."

"Mitch-"

"She's burning up," Mitch whimpers. Wyatt notices that his cheeks are almost just as wet as Finley's. "But her skin is freezing and her nose is running and she won't stop crying."

Scott reaches out, touches the back of his hand to Finley's forehead and then curses. "Okay," he breathes, pushing himself on to his feet before gathering some clothes off the floor and putting them on quickly. "You go get her dressed, get yourself dressed, and I'll grab her things and start the car."

"'Kay," Mitch whispers as he leaves the room in a rush.

Wyatt, meanwhile, follows Scott into the living room while the blonde picks up a few of Finley's toys off the floor. He gets tangled in Scott's feet and he swears as he stumbles, before gently pushing Wyatt away with his foot.

"Not now, Wyatt."

Wyatt frowns because Scott almost never called him just Wyatt, and then he frowns even more and follows him to the front door because Scott hasn't left in the middle of the night in years... and where's he going? He meows at him as he shoves his bare feet into a pair of shoes and then meows again as he grabs his keys off the table next to the door.

"Sorry, babes, you can't come with us," Scott frowns, scratching the back of Wyatt's head just the way he likes. "We'll be back soon."

Wyatt watches him leave and then watches Mitch leave, carrying a still crying Finley bundled up in his arms. He sort of hates her for taking them away in the middle of the night. He's also sort of worried though, because he knows that his humans are worried, though he'd never admit that.

-------

Finley's cold lasts for about a week, in which she spends every night sleeping tucked in between Scott and Mitch, while Wyatt sleeps at the bottom of the bed.

The first night Mitch puts the little human to bed in her own room, albeit begrudgingly because he's paranoid, Wyatt finds himself wandering inside to check on her. Not because he cares, of course, just because... okay, he cares, a little bit. Mostly because Mitch and Scott seem to really like this human and well, Wyatt supposes if anything happens to Finley then neither one of his humans would be very happy. Finley makes them happy, which Wyatt admires, but only a little bit.

-------

Wyatt's having a nap on the arm of the couch when he hears something moving below him. He opens his eyes and looks down over the front of the arm to see Finley, fingers gripping onto the fabric of the cushion, attempting to pull herself up.

Finley has her gaze set on Wyatt like she's trying to get to him, which is not anything new for the tiny human. She's been doing that a lot lately whenever Wyatt is somewhere that she can't reach. Both Mitch and Scott gush about how she'll be 'standing all on her own in no time' every time she does.

Curious, Wyatt pushes himself up to sit, watching as Finley's chubby little legs wobble slightly as she struggles to find her footing. She's doing well, Wyatt thinks, for a baby who's never stood up without Scott or Mitch there to help her.

As if on cue, while Finley is standing on both feet with both of her hands holding on to the edge of the couch cushion, Scott walks into the living room. Both Wyatt and Finley crane their necks to look at him as he pauses, his entire face lighting up and a wide, toothy grin stretching across his face. "Mitch!" He calls out, walking close to pet his hand down Wyatt's back and then stand behind Finley. She's looking up at him with deep brown eyes and her own toothy smile. "Mitch, get in here! Quick!"

Wyatt looks towards the entrance of the living room just as Mitch comes into view. A look of surprise flashes across his face before it lights up and his lips curve into a proud smile.

"What... when did she-"

"She was standing just like this when I walked in," Scott says, bending down so he's more at Finley's level as he balances on the balls of his feet. "Isn't that right, pretty girl?" He asks her, and Finley squeals in delight at the tone of his voice.

It's like Finley can't decide where to look. Her gaze shifting from Scott, to Mitch... who's standing next to the arm of the couch petting Wyatt, to Wyatt himself.

"I think she was trying to get to Wyatt."

"That's because she loves our Queen, right?" Mitch smiles, bending down to press a kiss to the top of Wyatt's head, before bending even lower to run his fingers through Finley's hair.

Wyatt tilts his head curiously, and then all of the sudden Mitch is pulling him down off the couch, holding him steady, close enough to his body that he feels warmth, but close enough to Finley that the baby could reach him if she wanted to. Mitch reminds her to be gentle and, well, Wyatt has to admit that Finley has become much more gentle over the last few months.

Finley turns her body partly away from the couch and lifts one hand away from the cushion to pet Wyatt, while Scott's hands come up on either side of her body, like he's ready to catch her at any moment. She makes a happy noise, looking up at Mitch with her bright eyes as she continues to pat Wyatt's head.

And then her legs start to wobble and she falls back into Scott's waiting arms. He steadies her, lowers her gently to the ground so she's sitting, and, to Wyatt's amazement, she isn't even fazed by the fact that she just fell.

-------

Finley's first birthday party is finally winding down and Wyatt couldn't be happier. He likes Scott and Mitch's family, but only in small doses... not all together and in the same space.

He's spent the majority of the party in the bedroom, hiding under the bed away from all the noise and the people. Mitch had, not all that long ago, brought in his food and water bowl and set them on the floor next to the night stand on his side of the bed. Then he laid down and stretched his arm out to rub Wyatt's head and give him encouraging words.

Now that he's alone and he can hear people leaving through the front door, he knows that, in a short matter of time, he'll have the house all to himself with his humans and their little human.

The door creaks open and Wyatt stiffens underneath the bed. He hears the sound of soft pitter patter of little hands slapping against the floor then, and moments later Finley comes into view. Finley is crawling towards the bed.. She knows where Wyatt hides, just like Scott and Mitch know.

The little human pokes her head under the bed and smiles. She plops down, scooting herself across the floor so she's half underneath the bed, with her butt and legs sticking out. She makes grabby hands at Wyatt, who, against his better judgement because he's actually sort of a little bit fond of the human, moves closer. In return, Finley squeals gleefully and scratches gently, although a bit clumsily, at the top of Wyatt's head.

"Fin!" Mitch calls out from somewhere outside the bedroom. "Fin, love, where-" There's a pause then, both in his voice and his footsteps. "There you are."

Finley moves herself around so she can see her dad, but points back under the bed. "At!"

"Yes," Mitch laughs, walking closer to the pair of them. "Wyatt's under the bed." He lays down beside Finley, pulls her into his side and curls an arm around her, and then they both look at Wyatt and smile. "Hi, Wy," he whispers at Wyatt, reaching his other arm under the bed to poke him softly on the nose. "Everyone's gone, wanna come out now?"

Then, with perfect timing, Scott walks into the room and he looks confused for a minute, before his face breaks out into a grin as he walks across the room. "What's going on in here? A little party I wasn't invited to?" He asked playfully, joining them on the floor. He sits cross legged against the night stand and helps Finley crawl into his lap.

She sits with her bottom in the space between Scott's legs with her own short, chubby legs hanging over his shins. She grins triumphantly, clapping excitedly, gaining a laugh from both Scott and Mitch, while leaning back into Scott's chest.

Wyatt looks from Mitch, whose eyes are glued to Finley, and then to Scott, whose gaze is also trained on the tiny human in his lap, and then to Finley, whose watching Wyatt fondly.

Up until a couple months ago, Wyatt would've scowled at the little human and walked away, maybe hid underneath the bed again depending on the circumstances. But, well, Wyatt finds he's actually fond of Finley. Not quite as fond as Mitch or Scott, but fond enough, he thinks
