The Truth

Here's some cutesy stuff because I'm meeting Pentatonix tomorrow and I'm in too good of a mood to write anything but that. :)

-------

It was now or never.

"Mom, I-I'm dating Scott."

At the counter, Nel freezes. Mitch does too, unsure of what her reaction meant.

Suddenly she whirls around, narrowing her eyes at Mitch. He winces, waiting for the fireworks that were surely coming his way.

"What day is it?" She questions, effectively confusing Mitch.

He blinks. Wait, what?

"W-what?"

"What day is it?" She calmly wipes her hands on the towel, tossing it on the counter. "The tenth, right?"

"Uh..." Mitch counts in his head, utterly bewildered. "Yeah."

"Okay." Nel turns back around to the counter, resuming her cooking. "Three months exactly then."

Three months from what exactly? Mitch had rehearsed this conversation in his head more times than he cared to admit, picturing every possible reaction that could've happened, none of which included this one. Quite frankly, he wasn't sure what to make of it.

He sighs.

"Mom-"

"So when are you having him over for dinner then?"

Mitch blanks again.

"I mean, I know Scott's here practically every other day, but now we can do it properly." She grabs the bag of apples and brings them over to the cutting board, slicing them into nice, even pieces, all while trying to hide the smile on her face. "Your dad can interrogate him and I can ask all the embarrassing questions-"

"Mom. Why aren't you freaking out?"

Nel stops what she's doing and looks up at him. "Hmm?"

Mitch plays with his fingers, avoiding eye contact. "Well, Scott's parents freaked out. Why aren't you freaking out?"

"They did? Hm, maybe I should go talk to them-"

"MOM."

"What Mitch?" She turns around, placing her hands on her hips. "Do you want me to freak out?"

Oh shit, she's bringing out the mom voice, which means Mitch is 10 seconds away from being yelled at. This was what he was more or less expecting though.

"No, I just-"

He fumbles for words as Nel keeps her eyes on him, one eyebrow raised.

"You just.." He swallows.

"Don't seem surprised." He finally finishes, sighing loudly, finally taking his eyes off his hands and looking at his mom.

Nel has a look on her face so reminiscent of Jessica, Mitch decides the bitchface must be genetic.

"Mitch." She comes around the counter and crosses her arms. "The very first day you met Scott you came home and told me you wanted to marry him."

Mitch scoffs. "Yeah, but I was like 8 then-"

"And you threw a fit when he wasn't in your third grade class. You didn't even want to go to school-"

"Of course I threw a fit." Mitch stated matter of factly. "I wanted to be with my friend-"

"And it's no coincidence that the only girlfriend you ever had was Kirstie, your freshman year when you had that giant fight with Scott. I was pretty sure it was just a cover up-"

"That's not why-"

"And then there was that day you were upstairs, exactly three months ago."

Mitch freezes.

"You two were having one hell of a fight." Nel states airily, tucking a piece of hair behind her ear. "You were screaming and you were so loud, I was about to come upstairs and tell you to knock it off when it got quiet. Too quiet." She says.

Mitch swallows.

Nel turns back to her apples, her voice light, a smirk on her face.

"And you may not have noticed, Mitchell Grassi, but when you both finally came downstairs your shirt was inside out."

Mitch chokes, turning bright red. He's never been more embarrassed in his life. Nel begins to stir in the sugar and cinnamon, waiting for Mitch to find his voice again.

"Okay, so maybe I've always had a thing for Scott." Mitch mumbles eventually. There was no use in trying to hide that fact now.

Nel laughs. "Yeah, just maybe." She beckons him over and nudges him with her elbow. "Bout time too."

"Shut up." Mitch grumbles.

She gets him to work on the pie dough while she's conveniently busy over at the sink, giving Mitch time to wipe his eyes. She comes back and kisses him on the temple.

"Better finish this pie by five so we have dessert to eat. I'll set a plate for Scott."

Mitch looks down at the dough, smiling like an idiot. "Yes ma'am." This conversation went the exact opposite of what he thought it would.

Nel starts to make her way towards Jessica's room. "Now where's your sister? She owes me forty bucks."

"Wait-" Mitch hears her laughter down the hall. "You and Jessica had a bet?!"
