Proposals
Scott and Mitch sort of had a monthly ritual they would do together, and for those who knew about it, they were absolutely against it. The two of them would go to a fancy restaurant that they wouldn't normally go to and make a big fuss over it. Even Scott, who didn't like to dress up, would wear a suit. Mitch was actually the one who suggested fake proposing to get a free meal. So the day before they first tried this, Scott went out and bought a cheap engagement ring.
From then on, since it went so smoothly, they decided to do it once a month. A little lie and a show was worth the free food they'd receive. They came up with a little system, each taking turns picking the restaurant and writing the proposal speech that Scott would say. The speech would be cheesy and fluffy, going somewhere along the lines of "I can't live without you, we're meant to be together, you're my everything, blah blah, fluff fluff," and after it was all said and done they'd drive home with full stomachs and leftovers, laughing about how ridiculous it all was.
Every once in a while, whenever it was Mitch's turn to write the speech, he would say that if he ever got proposed too he wouldn't want it to be so damn fluffy and cliche. No proposal on his birthday, or Christmas, or Valentine's Day, and if the speech was even half as fluffy as the fake ones, he'd probably punch him in the face. Scott always laughed it off, but he'd kept that in mind when he planned this month's dinner.
He treated it like every other dinner, letting Mitch write the proposal speech and pick where they were dining at. It was a random day in November, so it was a little bit chilly that night. Mitch hadn't suspected anything, even when he watched Scott put a little extra effort into keeping the ring box safe and secure.
When they got to the restaurant, as per usual, they ordered the most expensive thing on the menu. However, Mitch had been paying a little more attention to Scott, watching him squirm in his seat.
"Are you nervous or something? We've done this like 10 times now." Mitch said as he rolled his eyes, thinking how ridiculous Scott was being. "Besides, we haven't gotten caught yet and we've been using that cheap ass ring that turns my finger green." He laughed as he took another bite of his food.
Scott simply shrugged it off.
"I'm not nervous." He denied, wiping his sweaty palms on his pants, having barely touched his food.
Mitch rolled his eyes again, fixing that one piece of hair that never stays where it needs too.
"Whatever you say Scottie." Mitch hummed and shook his head.
They continued their dinner, Scott being surprised he could even hold a conversation with Mitch while he talked about whatever it was he was talking about without stuttering or getting flustered. When the dessert came out, it was go time. Scott lightly cleared his throat, signaling the show was about to start. Mitch played his part well, the unsuspecting boyfriend who thinks it's just a special night out. Scott winked at him, gave a small smirk, and threw his nerves out the window as he got down on one knee, taking the ring box out as well.
"Mitchell Grassi." Scott shakily said as he opened up the ring box.
Mitch immediately froze when he noticed that it was not the usual pathetic ring in that box tonight. Instead it's the ring he so perfectly described a few months back as his ideal engagement ring.
"What the hell are you doing?" He hissed, looking around nervously. "I swear to God Scott.."
Scott just let out a nervous laugh in reply.
"Mitch, just shut up a minute and listen to me." He teased as he cleared his throat again.
"Mitch, you always said that if I proposed to you, it needed to be on a random day, and when you least expected it. You also said that if I gave a fluffy speech, you'd punch me. So I've taken those things into consideration." He spoke softy as he took another big breath.
"I've known you since we were ten. We didn't start off on the right foot, and I was only friends with you because you were Kirstie's friend. I never expected to fall in love with you. Even when senior year you all of the sudden became really hot, I always told myself we were just friends. When we first kissed, I won't lie, it didn't meant anything to me. At that point it was college and I was a mess, sleeping with guys just because I could. It got to the point where I was bored with them, but with you, I was never bored. You always kept me on my toes, and you brought out this whole other side of me I never knew I had. When you showed up at my dorm a couple weeks after we started hooking up, demanding to know what we were, I was shocked. Not once was I ever asked that. I never made it long enough with the other person for them to even ask. Without hesitation I asked you out, officially. Our relationship was always unconventional, we're both so stubborn and opinionated, but I wouldn't have it any other way. When you came up with the idea to propose, I wondered what it would be like to actually propose, and I think that was when I realized that that's exactly what I wanted to do. You've surprised me from the very beginning Mitch, and yes I'm going to be fluffy and say that you've changed me as a person, and you're always on my side, even when I'm wrong. I'm forever thankful for that, and grateful for you. But this time, I thought I'd surprise you." He said, as he kept his gaze on Mitch, who for once, sat speechless with a hand covering his mouth, listening intently.
"So what do ya say Mitchie? How about we show the world that two fuck ups who were never meant to last, lasted?" Scott smiled slightly and winked.
Mitch stayed silent for a few moments, letting all the words that were just said sink in before nodding slightly.
"You idiot. Of course I'll marry you." Mitch sassed as Scott slid the ring on his finger.
In an instant Mitch wrapped his arms around Scott's neck as he stood, and pressed his lips to Scott's.
"I don't mind the fluff as much as I normally do." He whispered into Scott's ear and he pulled away slightly, admiring how perfect the ring was.
"Good, because I can't say I was looking forward to getting punched." Scott teased as he wrapped his arms around Mitch's waist.
Mitch rolled his eyes and kissed him again, ignoring the clapping and cheering of the people around them.
