Half a Heart
"This is yours, Scott, okay? You need to keep it safe."
Scott is just five years old when he asks his mom what the half-shaped, rose gold heart is for.
"It will help you find the other half of your heart, dear, your soulmate. Scott, for every half a heart, there's another that belongs to one other person, and that person is your soulmate. That person is the one you're supposed to spend the rest of your life with. Their heart will fit perfectly against your heart, and that's when you'll know you've found the one person who was made just for you and your heart. So, you need to keep it extra safe, Scott, because your other half will keep their heart extra safe for you too."
-------
Scott is 13 when he finds himself in love with Grant.
He meets Grant when he's eight years old. Grant is the popular kid at school, the goofy, charismatic, class clown. He's very loud, very quirky, very confident, and everyone loves him... even the teachers, who tend to discipline him behind smiles and eye rolls. He's short, with light brown hair and sparkling green eyes, and a perfect smile to match. Scott is instantly drawn to him, but so is everyone else.
Grant approaches Scott at lunch time, and by the end of the hour Grant decides that they're gonna be best friends.
And then they are. They're inseparable, basically a package deal. Scott's a bit more quiet and more reserved than Grant is, but they balance each other out and that's what Scott likes about it. That they seem to complete each other.
When they're 10, Scott starts to wonder if they're soulmates.
But Grant doesn't have his heart necklace like Scott does... hanging from a chain around his neck and almost always tucked safely underneath his shirts. "My mom wants to wait until I'm 13 to give me mine," Grant tells him when Scott asks why he doesn't have his.
That's a long time to wait, three years, to see if Grant is his soulmate, but Scott is ready and willing. Grant makes him happy, makes him feel special and important. Just the thought of seeing Grant makes Scott's heart race in his chest, and the butterflies come alive in his stomach every time Scott does see him. Sometimes Grant holds his hand and sometimes they cuddle together when they're watching movies in the basement. Scott thinks they're perfect together and that it just makes sense.
Besides, it's already been two years, so Scott's pretty sure he can wait three more years.
-------
Grant gets his heart necklace on his 13th birthday and Scott is sick with anticipation for the moment when he can put their hearts together. But there are so many people gathered at Grant's house for the party, and Scott is nervous enough as it is, so he waits and then waits some more. He waits until all their friends are gone and Grant's mom is cleaning up the mess they've left behind while the boys are playing Grant's new video game. 20 minutes in, Scott can't take it anymore so he pauses the game, against Grant's wishes, and he grabs Grant's necklace from around his neck and places the jagged edge of the heart against his own. And then his real heart plummets into his stomach and his chest tightens and Grant looks confused, but Scott doesn't care because it doesn't match. Grant's half doesn't fit his half. But Scott's always been stubborn, so he tries again, and again, and again. It just doesn't fit.
Grant looks at him like he's crazy, laughing as he snatches his necklace back. He teases Scott for thinking they would be soulmates, turns the game back on, and says that he's straight anyways. Scott doesn't care about anything else after that. Grant is straight and not his soulmate, and that's it.
Grant doesn't seem to notice the unshed tears shining in Scott's eyes or the way his breathing has quickened like he's about to lose it. Grant's mom comes in with Scott's mom trailing behind and by the time Grant does notice the tears and the labored breathing and the shaking hands and the quivering bottom lip, Scott's pushing him away and yanking his own mom towards the front door. He wants nothing more than to leave.
-------
Scott cries for a few hours that night. His mom holds him and strokes his hair and comforts him in the way she used to when he was scared or upset. He buries himself against her chest like his life depends on it, like her body would shield him from the pain. But it doesn't shield him at all, because the pain is inside of him and it just hurts. It hurts so badly and he's positive that his heart, his real heart, is literally breaking.
Breaking because the universe has to be wrong, Grant has to be his soulmate.
His mom comforts him until he's calm enough to go to bed. The doorbell rings, even though it's close to 10 pm, and his mom leaves to answer it. Almost immediately Grant is there and he's apologizing over and over. He's almost in tears too and Scott knows that Grant doesn't mean to not be his soulmate, so he lets him crawl into the bed and hold him. Grant tells him that maybe they are soulmates, just soulmates of a different kind. "Like, friend soulmates, yeah? We can still be friends, right?"
And Scott's never really had a choice in the matter anyway, not that he would ever choose differently, so he nods.
-------
Scott becomes kind of obsessed with the idea of finding his soulmate after the Grant fiasco. Actually obsessed. He's always checking other people's heart necklaces, trying to make them fit against his own.
Everyone thinks he's weird and a little crazy for it, but they laugh it off as Scott just being Scott. And for now, he's okay with that.
-------
Scott is 16 when he meets Taylor.
She's friends with his sister Lauren, both of whom attend the same college and have some of the same classes. She's older and more mature, and there's just something about her that draws him in the first time he sees her sitting at the island in his kitchen when he comes home from school. She smiles at him and runs a hand through her dark hair, and Scott's sure his real heart skips a beat because she's beautiful.
His gaze falls to the small heart hanging around her neck on the outside of her shirt when she isn't looking, and he can't help but automatically wonder if hers is the one. But then Lauren is pulling Taylor towards her room to do homework and Scott doesn't have the chance to check.
Taylor becomes a regular in their house, hanging out with Lauren and talking to his mom and ruffling his hair when she walks by him in the hallway. Scott's hardly had the chance to actually talk to her, but she seems nice and she's goofy and he can already feel himself falling for her. He can feel the way his palms sweat around her, the way the butterflies come out in his stomach when he sees her, the way his real heart beats faster when she laughs. He can feel it.
-------
Lauren's supposed to pick him up from school one day but something came up so Taylor picks him up instead. His friends whistle and nudge him and tease him and he fights the blush crawling up his neck as he climbs into the passenger seat. The whole car ride is spent blasting music and singing along. Scott thinks he might finally have the chance to check her heart.
She pulls into his driveway to let him out and he hesitates, his hand holding on to the door handle, and then he goes for it. He asks her if he can see her necklace. She seems to know exactly what he wants it for and so she pulls it off over her head and holds it out to him.
Scott holds his breath and his fingers tremble slightly as he tries to fit the two halves together and somehow he knows before he even tries.
And, as it turns out, Taylor isn't his soulmate because she's already someone else's.
-------
The thing is, Scott falls too soon. He falls and so he hopes and dreams and he believes. That's what makes the let down so hard.
-------
Scott is 17 when he meets Colin.
He's kind of the badass new kid who doesn't care what anyone thinks, and everyone at school is kind of intimidated by his leather jackets, black skinny jeans and tattoos.
Scott isn't really sure what to make of him at first because Colin is quiet, but he's bold at the same time. He mostly keeps to himself, but he's also quite cocky. He's intriguing.
He bumps into Colin, literally, as he's leaving school one day. The contact sends his books falling to the floor. Apologies start spilling out of his mouth as he bends down to pick them up, and then all of a sudden Colin is there and he's helping. Five minutes later they're walking home together because, as it conveniently turns out, Colin lives two streets over from Scott. By the time Scott settles in bed that night, he's decided that he might like Colin.
They walk home together the next day, and the day after, and then suddenly they've gotten into a routine and a new friendship involving hanging out on weekends. Grant tells him to be careful, and Scott isn't sure if it's because Grant doesn't like Colin, or if he's just worried for Scott. But it doesn't really matter, because Scott likes Colin. Like, really likes him.
Scott gets his first tattoo with Colin. He smokes his first joint with Colin. And yeah, he might have been a little high and a little drunk, but his first real kiss was with Colin and it was of course perfect anyways. Scott just really really wants Colin to be his soulmate.
But Scott checks the necklace around Colin's neck one night after he's fallen asleep on Scott's bed and Scott's real heart breaks again because Colin's necklace doesn't fit with his.
-------
Scott is 19 when he stops believing in soulmates.
He stops. He stops hoping and wishing and searching, because maybe his mom was wrong.
Maybe the universe is wrong. Maybe he doesn't have a soulmate and maybe he's meant to live his life alone.
Maybe distancing himself from the idea of finding his soulmate will, at the very least, keep him from getting his real heart broken anymore.
And maybe it's selfish and childish and unrealistic to think like that, but what else is he supposed to do at this point? He's been hoping and wishing and searching for years and out of everyone he knows, it seems that he's the only one who hasn't found his soulmate.
Lauren has her boyfriend, Taylor has her boyfriend. Grant has his girlfriend.
How do they do it? How do some people just manage to kind of stumble across their soulmate like it's the easiest thing in the world? How is it fair that some people just get to magically find their soulmate on the first or second try while others are left heartbroken after multiple let downs?
Alright, so maybe he isn't the only one, but he's the only one who matters because he's the only one who cares. Colin is happy to be living the single life and being able to do whatever he wants.
-------
Colin gives him an idea one night when all of his friends are hanging out at his parents cabin a couple hours from home. It's the middle of august and there's only a couple of weeks until he starts college at USC and until everyone else goes back to where ever they go to. He'd taken a year off to work so that his parents weren't stuck paying much for his tuition.
Colin tells him that going to a University is very different from High school because where the kids in high school are mostly obsessed with the idea of finding a soulmate, 'Not unlike you, Scott,' the kids at University don't usually give a fuck. Everyone just kind of dates, or fucks, everyone just for the hell of it, and it they happen to stumble across their soulmate, well then even better. He says that this is Scott's chance. His chance to forget about the rose gold heart around his neck and just have fun, to go to parties and kiss strangers and make friends and maybe have lots of sex along the way, 'because hell, I think you need it.'
Grant hates the idea, which isn't all that surprising because he has a habit of hating almost everything that comes out of Colin's mouth.
The idea confuses Scott, but also intrigues him.
-------
Scott meets Chad and then Jordan and then Kendall in his first semester and they're all flings. None of them are his soulmates and for once, for the first time in his entire life, Scott doesn't care.
He doesn't care because they're casual, easy relationships and both parties know that they won't last, and they're okay with that.
-------
And then Scott meets Mitch.
It's the third day of the second semester and Scott's bored out of his mind working in the tiny campus cafe. It's late in the evening, which is when the flow of tired university kids are at their lowest, because they're probably all off studying or sleeping. Morning shifts were always his favorite because yeah, he's busy, but it makes the day go faster.
He's tired and grumpy because he didn't sleep well last night. Colin had decided to throw a last minute welcome back party for everyone in their dorm, despite the fact that everyone had only been gone for a month for winter break. He's literally counting down the minutes until he can lock the door and finish cleaning up. It's 8:56 and Scott has the key in his hand, ready to walk around the counter and lock up a couple minutes early, but then the door swings open, bringing in the breeze from a cool LA night, and a boy with brunette hair poking out of a red beanie, red cheeks and deep brown eyes.
Scott freezes and looks at the boy who crosses his arms and runs his hands up and down them to generate some heat.
"Hey, I know you're closing, but my class ran late because some idiot didn't know when to stop arguing with the professor and it's fucking freezing out there and I would just really, really, like hot chocolate."
The boy's voice is higher than expected, but Scott doesn't think he's heard a voice more captivating, or seen a face more beautiful he decides. He blinks, taken aback for a moment, before stepping back behind the counter. "Um, yeah, sure. Large?"
"Yeah, thank you so much! How much is it?"
Scott shakes his head as he presses the button to dispense the hot chocolate into a large paper cup. "Don't worry about it."
"Wait, what? Are you sure?" The boy looks stunned.
Scott has to bite back a laugh. "Yeah, it's fine. It's on the house."
"Because I can-"
"Seriously, it's fine. I don't feel like punching it in and having more paperwork." Scott insists, handing him the cup.
"Oh, yeah. Okay, sorry. I owe you one then."
"Don't worry about it. Have a good night."
The boy nods and smiles, and his lips are perfect and his teeth are perfect and his smile is radiant. "You too."
And then he's gone and Scott's feet are glued to the floor as he stares at the spot where the boy just was. He closes his eyes and shakes his head, as though to erase the thoughts floating around about the beautiful boy and his beautiful smile and beautiful voice and his heart necklace.
-------
Scott hears the boy before he sees him a few days later, and even though he's only met the guy once, he'd know that voice anywhere.
He's only just started his shift, tying up his apron behind his back when he hears his name being called. His stomach does that thing where it jumps to his throat, and sure enough, when he turns around, the boy is standing there, black jacket and black skinny jeans. The boy smiles at him and waves as he makes his way towards the counter, and Scott can't help the fact that he stands a bit straighter. It doesn't even matter to him how the boy knows his name, he just thinks it's a bit unfair that he doesn't know the stranger's name.
"Hey!" The boy greets him.
"Hey, hot chocolate?"
"Not today. I think..." he trails off, looking up at the menu board above Scott's head. He rests his right hand on the counter and uses the other to fix his side swept bangs. "What do you drink? What's your favorite?" The boy asks, looking back at Scott.
Scott shrugs, "I really like the caramel latte this time of year. It's pretty good."
"I'll have that then. A large." The boy slides a couple dollars across the counter and Scott punches it in quickly before turning away to make the drink.
"How long have you been working here?"
Scott glances sideways to see the boy leaning with his elbows on the counter, watching him intently. "Um, since like, the last week of September."
"Gotcha. First year or...?"
"First, yeah. But I took a year off."
"Yeah, me too. But I only just started in January."
"That explains why I haven't seen you around before," Scott replies.
The boy smirks. "Yeah, I guess it does."
Scott places the latte on the counter between them as the boy pushes himself back.
"Well, I gotta get to class, I'll see you around, Scott."
"Wait! You uh, forgot your drink." Scott calls after him.
The boy turns but continues to walk backwards to the door. "It's yours, on me." And then he smiles and winks, and then he's out the door before Scott can register what's happening.
And Scott still doesn't know his name.
-------
Scott learns the boy's name two days later when he stops by to buy himself, and Scott much to his protests, a drink before going to class. Mitch. Mitch Grassi.
And he spends the rest of his shift repeating Mitch's name over and over and over in his head.
-------
Three days after that, Scott learns that Mitch is taking music and sound engineering. He plays the piano and sings in his spare time, and Scott doesn't admit to it out loud, but he would really like to hear Mitch sing some time.
-------
Grant knows something's up with him, that there's somebody new in his life, and try as Scott might to deny it because he doesn't want to make a big deal of anything yet, Grant refuses to believe him.
"I know you, Scott, and I know when there's somebody new in your life. So tell me." Grant demands one Saturday evening in February. Grant's girlfriend is draped across his lap and even she seems interested in what Scott has to say.
Scott wants to tell them it's not just somebody, because it's Mitch, but he doesn't. Grant swears that he'll find out no matter what.
-------
Grant drags him to a party across campus the following Saturday. Well, more along the lines of Grant is at a party and then calls Scott and forces him to get out of his pajamas to join him and Eleanor, threatening to physically drag him there if it comes down to it. Even though Scott would really rather just stay home and daydream about Mitch and his dimpled smile, he pulls on his favorite pair of black skinny jeans and a white long sleeve shirt and hides his hair with a backwards snapback. Maybe it's better if he gets out, maybe it's better to stop thinking about Mitch before it's too late.
The party is already in full swing by the time Scott gets there and everyone is already drunk, including Grant, who throws himself against Scott and claims he's found someone he wants Scott to meet. As much as Scott wants to protest, because he's already been obsessing over a pretty brunette boy and he doesn't want to meet anyone else right now, Eleanor comes barging over and pulls Scott through a multitude of drunk University kids. Of course, even if he tried to protest, no one would hear him over the loud music.
Eleanor pulls them into the living room, where several people are gathered on the couch and there's a boy sitting off to the side at the keyboard with a red beanie on his head. "Mitch!"
Scott freezes and everything just kind of slows to a stop, in his mind it does anyway. His breath catches in his throat and his heart skips a beat in his chest and the butterflies in his stomach start fluttering. He thinks he might be sick, or maybe he'll pass out.
And then there's Mitch, standing up from the chair and he turns around to face the three of them. His eyes, chocolate colored and mesmerizing, widen and then dance in recognition. He grins that wide, radiant, dimpled smiles that makes Scott weak in the knees.
"Mitch, this is the friend I was talking about-" Grant starts, but Mitch cuts him off.
"Scott, hey."
Scott swallows the lump in his throat. "Hey, Mitch."
"Wait, you guys know each other?" Eleanor wonders out loud, looking curiously between the two of them.
Scott just kind of stares at Mitch and he's more than grateful when Mitch speaks up. "Yeah, I mean, Scott works at the campus cafe I go to sometimes. He gave me a free hot chocolate the first time I went there. That's how we met."
Grant places a hand on each boys' shoulders. "Well boys, that's less work that I have to do then."
"Mitch!" A voice bellows from behind them.
Scott cranes his neck to see a tall strapping fellow with long, curly, brown hair and a puppy dog face walking towards them.
"Avi!"
"Hey, sing for us," the guy named Avi tells him, clapping Mitch on the shoulder. "Play us something."
Scott looks back at Mitch, who glances at him briefly with a kind of knowing smirk on his lips, and Scott smirks back because this is his chance to finally hear Mitch sing.
"Yeah, listen to Avi, Grassi. Play something," Grant encourages.
"Right, okay. Someone give me a song."
And then suddenly a crowd has formed around them and everyone is yelling out songs. Scott gets the feeling this has happened before because Mitch is laughing and sitting down at the keyboard and everyone is waiting. Scott holds his breath, shoving his hands into his pockets as he watches Mitch and the way his fingers start dancing across the keys.
Then Mitch starts to sing and it's like the heavens have opened up and everyone is watching him and listening to him. He sounds like a literal angel. His voice is soft and melodious, complementing the sounds of the keyboard. Scott is star struck because he wasn't expecting Mitch to be this brilliant, but Mitch is kind of a big freaking deal.
Mitch sings three more songs before standing up from the keyboard to mingle and have a few more drinks. Scott can't help but watch him whenever he isn't looking. The boy is a people person, everyone just loves him and flocks to him. Scott wonders if maybe that's why he's so drawn to him. He spends the rest of the night, and early morning, with Mitch, talking and joking and laughing. By the end of the party, Mitch is no longer just a boy who comes into the cafe or the object of his thoughts or the mystery he's kept from Grant.
By the end of the party, Mitch is Mitch and it's like Scott has known him his entire life. That's how it feels anyway, because even though the boy makes his stomach churn and his heart skip beats, it's easy just being with Mitch.
-------
Mitch laughs too loudly, talks too much, and moves around too easily. This much is clear as time goes on as Scott gets to spend more time with him.
Scott has admitted to himself that he's officially smitten with Mitch, and more than anything in the world, he just wants to know what his necklace looks like.
-------
Scott goes back home with Mitch for a week. Mitch invites him because he says his mom wants to meet the new friend he's made and Scott doesn't have to be asked twice. At this point, he'd go anywhere with him if Mitch asked him to.
And it's there that things start to change. Things like Mitch sitting closer to Scott on the couch than usual, tossing his legs over Scott's. Or Mitch standing so close to Scott that he can feel the body heat radiating off of him, and maybe even hear his heartbeat a bit. They touch each other a bit more, grabbing an arm when something is funny or bumping into the other without cause or reason, just because they can. Scott noticed that when Mitch introduced him to his best friend Tyson, Mitch hesitated when introducing Scott as his friend, like he wanted to say something more.
Sometimes Scott catches Mitch staring at him from across the dinner table. Sometimes Mitch's fingers brush Scott's 'accidentally' when they're watching TV.
These changes are small and gradual, but Scott can feel them, can feel something changing between them and he just knows that Mitch feels it too.
And then the night before they go back to LA is when everything changes.
They're in Mitch's room, having just said goodnight to his family, and Scott's laying on his back next to Mitch, who's laying on his side facing away from him. Scott's staring up at the ceiling because he can't sleep. He's worried about what's going to happen when they get back. Will things change again? Will things go back to the way they were? Will he ever get the courage to ask Mitch about his necklace?
"Scott?"
Scott's breath hitches in his throat and he curses himself for it because chances are Mitch heard it. He pauses for a moment before answering, "Yes?"
"I can't sleep."
"Me either."
There's the sound of rustling of sheets interrupting the silence, and Scott can feel the mattress moving as Mitch turns around to face him. Scott does the same, turning onto his side to mirror Mitch's position. He pulls his knees up a little and they rest against Mitch's as he tucks his arms into his chest and under his pillow. They stare at each other for a moment in silence and, even in the darkness of the room, Scott can still see how beautiful Mitch's eyes are.
"Do you believe in the soulmate thing?" Mitch asks, breaking the silence.
Scott blinks. "I thought everybody did."
Mitch shrugs. "I just... I know some people who don't... or at least they don't care. But they're all with somebody anyway and they're still really happy."
"Oh."
"I want you to be my soulmate," Mitch whispers.
Scott reaches for his necklace so fast, pushing himself onto his elbow to take it off when Mitch stops him. Scott's brows furrow in confusion, because how else would they know if they were soulmates?
"Just... Scott, I've always been obsessed with the idea of finding my soulmate. I drove myself crazy with it. It just led to a lot of broken hearts so I decided to stop looking. I mean... you know the saying that sometimes you have to stop looking for something in order to find it?"
Scott nods, laying back down as he continues to hold onto the half heart necklace.
"And then I found you, Scott."
A breath catches in Scott's throat again and he continues to watch Mitch.
Mitch continues, his gaze seeming far away like he's in another world. "I couldn't stop thinking about you. And you made me smile and laugh and I would always get butterflies in my stomach and my palms would get sweaty and... and this is different. This feels different from anything I've ever felt with anyone. It's like... it's like I know that we're supposed to be together."
"I know," Scott whispers, his voice raspy.
"I just want you to be my soulmate, Scotty."
"Then, here," Scott murmurs desperately, moving to take off his necklace, only to be stopped by Mitch again. Why won't he check?
"I want you to be my soulmate," the brunette says for the third time, and Scott's about to scream at him because he doesn't understand why he won't look at his damn necklace. "But it won't matter to me if you aren't, because either way I'm in love with you. And I just... I guess I just need to know where you stand before we compare necklaces."
Scott doesn't know how to say what he's thinking because his head is a mess and his real heart is beating so fast in his chest that it almost hurts. Mitch's voice, his words, 'I'm in love with you,' are bouncing off the walls in his head and it means everything to him. He just doesn't know how to say that.
He doesn't know how to explain it, how to tell Mitch he feels the same way even though it should be incredibly easy now. He doesn't know how to put the words and all the thoughts running through his head into actual sentences. That he doesn't care if Mitch isn't his actual soulmate because as far as he's concerned, Mitch feels like it anyways. Or that Scott would do anything to make their hearts fit together like puzzle pieces if they don't already. He doesn't know how to put into words the feelings that are taking over his heart.
Mitch is looking at him and his eyes are desperate. His bottom lip is quivering, which should be illegal, so Scott does the only thing he can think of and kisses him.
Mitch's lips are smooth and warm and feel so perfect and so incredibly good against his own. Scott is 100% sure that nothing has ever felt this right before, that no other first kiss has ever felt this perfect. Scott rolls over, crawling on top of Mitch as he tugs the smaller boy's bottom lip between his teeth. It elicits a soft, barely there moan from Mitch, whose arms come up to wrap around Scott's neck, forcing their bodies flush together.
Scott only pulls away to breathe, because he has to, not because he wants to, pressing his forehead against Mitch's.
"Our necklaces," Mitch whispers, bring his hand around to touch Scott's rose gold heart.
Scott shakes his head, pressing a chaste kiss to Mitch's lips. "Let's just... forget about them for one more night," he whispers back. "Let's just have this night together first."
And Mitch can't do anything but nod, pulling their lips back together as a very Mitch-like giggle escapes his throat.
-------
They compare necklaces the next morning, sitting cross legged on Mitch's bed like children trading Pokemon cards. Scott's never been more terrified in his life. Mitch has to gently move Scott's shaking hands away from his necklace and help him get it off. Then he waits with bated breath as Mitch brings them together. As much as he's come to terms with the fact that it doesn't matter if their necklaces match or not, because he will want Mitch no matter what, he still wants Mitch to be his real, actual soulmate.
And then the pieces come together and all the air leaves Scott's lungs as Mitch lunges forward, throwing himself at Scott and knocking them both over in a mess of flailing limbs and blissful giggles and wonderful kisses.
Mitch's heart matches his own. It's a perfect fit.
But it's not just that.
-------
It's that Mitch makes him feel whole, like his soul fills the cracks in Scott's heart and the holes in his soul. Mitch is everything that is right in the world. He's sunshine and rainbows, He's warmth and comfort on a gloomy day. He's butterflies and kisses and blowjobs in the morning. He's the walks in the parks in the afternoons when they have time and he's good company at work when Scott's bored, where they steal kisses between customers. He's blanket forts on their days off and watching sunsets at the beach.
Scott's mother adores Mitch and dotes on him more than she dotes on her own son. Lauren and Lindsay think Mitch is adorable and charming. Grant is ecstatic when he finds out and Colin couldn't be happier for him
And Mitch is just... Mitch. Yeah he laughs too loud and talks too much and he's more impulsive than Scott could ever be, but he's perfect. He's perfect in all the ways that are important to Scott and that's all that matters.
-------
It turns out his mother wasn't lying when she said that one day he would find his soulmate, the other half of his heart, and that it would be perfect.
It's like Mitch was made just for him.
