rowyn was sitting in her hanging chair reading a book. the sunlight directly hit her making the black inked words even more visible. a fuzzy blanket was draped across her lap
it was a typical saturday morning for her. rowyn had already did her chores around the house which consisted of cleaning the bathrooms, her room and the study room downstairs. plus she had cleaned the kitchen and the floors.
after all of that, she smelled like a cleaning bomb. a shower was calling her name. her damp bright red hair was currently air drying. covered in hair gloss and leave in conditioner.
when done reading, she decided to go for a walk. the cicadas were singing away and the leaves were rustling due to the humid wind. she looked around making sure nobody was nearby, pulling out a hot pink ipod nano along with some headphones that attach to it.
wednesday morning, her and scarlett sat in an empty classroom after they ate lunch. their teacher could care less making sure the door was locked. the two girls were her favorites and always respected the classroom and her boundaries cleaning up after themselves so she figured she'd let them come there whenever they wanted to get away from all of the noise
rowyn was sketching away in her book when scarlett suddenly pulled out the present. she shot her a look with scarlett chuckling, "this is one of my old ipods i found in my closet. it still works...." she slid it over to rowyn
"i wanted you to have it." scarlett insisted with rowyn shaking her head, her parents would kill her if they knew she had this kind of device under their roof.
"i appreciate this scar but i can't—-"
"i'm not listening to that bullshit, take it. hide it under your floorboard." scarlett said exposing rowyn who shut up real quickly
scarlett barley goes over to the walsh residence, she has good reasons for that. one night, scarlett heard a loud creek then walked into rowyn's room to see a crowbar in her hand.
she had simply removed a piece of wood from the floor placing her diary in there then put it back. scarlett stood by the doorway making sure not to get seen. it was a place her parents never have expected her to hide her secrets
rowyn was perplexed knowing scarlett knows her about her hiding stash, but she trusts scarlett. her bestfriend would never tell anyone. they always have kept their friendship business between each other, no outsiders allowed
"i already put some artists on here that i think you would love, clean versions of songs of course." rowyn smiled happily knowing her friend always respects her boundaries
scarlett pulled out a folded piece of paper placing it in her hand. rowyn pulled it out of her pocket now reading it for the first time. she began to read in her head:
"hey hot tamale, this list consists of multiple songs i feel you would relate too and or love. i'd recommend you start off by listening to ethel cain first, love u!!
p.s. please give sabrina carpenter's music a chance before you skip her songs. she is not a horn dog i swear, okay bye! <3"
family tree - ethel cain
not strong enough - boygenius
jenny-lynne - looking glass
vicious - sabrina carpenter
train under water - bright eyes
american teenager - ethel cain
window over the bay - vashti bunyan
tonight - sibylle baier
blown away - carrie underwood
dumb & poetic - sabrina carpenter
strangers - ethel cain
out of the woods - taylor swift
tornado warnings - sabrina carpenter
come out and play - billie eilish
a taste of honey - the beatles
inbred - ethel cain
me and my husband - mitski
you will - patty loveless
hard times - ethel cain
taste - sabrina carpenter
misuse oh - ethel cain
while on the walk, rowyn found herself listening to ethel cain the most out of every artist on that list. her music was way too relatable to rowyn along with her life.
she felt like she was listening to an angel when hearing her melodic voice. family tree and strangers hit too hard for the teen who damn near was on the verge of tears hearing the lyrics, 'and bathe me clean' & 'am i making you feel sick?'
the emotions throughout her songs were felt on a different level for rowyn. she knew she had to listen to preachers daughter front to back as soon as possible
she made sure to turn the ipod off placing it along with her headphones and the piece of paper back into her pocket. when she got back inside she resumed to reading enjoying the silence within the house.
taryn was no where to be found, has been that way since she first woke up. her car is in the driveway but rowyn figured she probably was out running errands with their mom.
her father was out in the garage working on their 1970 ford mustang. that car was her father's prized possession. a car that was passed down to him after his father passed away.
rowyn barley had a relationship with her grandfather. he was a mean old man until the day he died. not big on love or affection which makes sense as to why her father is the way he is. growing up on the hillside of ireland on a farm with five siblings was a lot for rory.
he is the oldest out of the five siblings, his parents expected nothing but greatness from
their son. he was the hardest working out of the bunch. always out on the farm caring for the crops and animals.
cillian was a tough one to crack, barley ever smiled. he took everything seriously. not many smiles or laughter was shared within their household. the kids mostly played games and played whenever their dad was far away from the house
they'd play hide and seek throughout the corn maze near their farm, purposefully leaving someone behind to have them terrified in the end. the five children would find themselves playing chubby bunny using up all of the marshmallows causing their father to blow a storm whenever he had none for his hot chocolate
anytime he would ask what happened to the marshmallows, each kid would act oblivious with their mother coming to the rescue. she'd lie and say she fed marshmallows to the alligators and raccoons.
their dad didn't believe that but he would let it go. saying 'i love you' to each other was never apparent to them. hugging didn't exist either and neither did some words of encouragement. this trait has now been passed down to rory and his own family with him only saying i love you to his wife anna who he adores
most of this makes sense as to why rowyn is the way she is. anytime somebody hugs her or touches her, it is evident on how uncomfortable she is. the only person she is fine with touching her is scarlett, nova and her cousin luke.
other than nova, luke is one of her closest friends. he is the outcast of the family. not many members fool with him strictly because of the fact that he is bisexual. him coming out was the worst thing to happen, but he was happy he was able to come out when he was ready.
the only people who were by his side were rowyn, scarlett and nova. also a few of his friends always remained by his side, most importantly his mother.
nora is the middle child and the only one who doesn't take a dislike to the lgbt community. she was totally fine with her son coming out to her, it didn't change their dynamic at all. if anything they have grown closer and their bond is stronger than ever
most of the kids picked on luke at first but after awhile everyone began to leave him alone. he still gets called slurs on a daily basis, but he takes it ignoring all of the noise
unfortunately, the walsh family is filled with homophobic people with rory and anna being amongst those. after finding out about luke and his sexual orientation, they forbidden him from
coming to their house. even tried keeping rowyn away from her older cousin but nora set both of them straight.
letting them know that they needed to keep their beliefs out of rowyn and luke's bond. their innocent friendship didn't need to be ruined over anna and rory. nora refused to let that happen.
whenever the two hang out, it always it at nora's place or at scarlett's place. luke and rowyn share a special bond, the two can be their true selves around each other. not many see the true side of rowyn but when they do.... it is a beautiful sight.
rowyn suddenly heard some chatter downstairs, meaning her mom and sister were back. anna wasted no time heading up the stairs to talk to rowyn. she stood in the doorway looking around admiring the clean room.
"we're going over to pastor wyatt's in a few minutes." she crossed her arms, informing her daughter who looked over at her mom.
she shook her head then continued on reading, "okay, i'm going to stay here."
"i wasn't asking, you're coming with us." rowyn glared at her mother who was already heading down the stairs. there was no choice for her unfortunately.
she slammed her book shut getting up to put her beat up white vans on her feet. rowyn didn't even bother changing clothes, she headed straight downstairs to see her family putting groceries away. taryn placed a new jug of milk into the refrigerator shutting the door turning around letting out a laugh.
"you're wearing that?" anna heard taryn say which made her stop unpacking, she placed her hand on her hip looking daggers at rowyn
"go change." her mother commanded
taryn quietly laughed seeing her sister storm back upstairs to her room. she changed into some blue jeans, a cream colored ruffled shirt then threw on a pair of floral ballet flats
leaving her hair in its natural wavy state, she then tried going back downstairs where her mother was waiting. she inspected her outfit nodding in approval. "good. now come help up put up the rest of the groceries please."
"yes ma'am."
they now were suddenly at the thatcher's house. taryn, rowyn and chase were sitting amongst each other in the study room while the grown ups talked. the two sisters sat on the same couch far away from each other. chase sat across from them just staring at the two of them.
rowyn yawned quickly covering her mouth barley mouthing a word since she has gotten here. she laid back leaning her elbow onto the edge of the couch shutting her eyes.
taryn decided to be nosy, "so how are your tutoring sessions going with this sour prune?" rowyn's eyes remained shut ignoring her sister and her smart ass remark
"they're going good." chase answered honestly fidgeting with his oversized denim jeans that his mother begged him not to wear
"how much longer will she tutor you?" taryn asked nosily, rowyn started tapping her foot silently
chase shrugged, "i'm honestly not too sure, it's all up to principal sinclair." he admitted
"so do you prefer her to the other nerds who have tutored you?" rowyn groaned
"please shut up."
taryn ignored her, chase looking at rowyn with some concern written within his face. taryn noticed which weirded her out because chase barley shows any concern for anybody other than himself
he is the type of person that if someone fainted in front of him, he walk away not attempting to help. for him to go check on rowyn and be concerned definitely raised questions especially from scarlett
she is waiting for these tutoring sessions to come to a halt. a dark energy comes from within chase, she feels wholeheartedly.
chase kissed his teeth loudly giving a precise answer, "i actually do prefer your sister over the rest. her patience level is impressive."
for the rest of the evening, the three of them sat in the study room. taryn and chase both talking about different subjects, rowyn not getting in on their conversation.
it was sunday morning, scarlett and nova had returned from nashville tennessee just in time to make it to church. nova surprised her daughter with tickets to see sabrina carpenter.
scarlett has been a huge fan of her since the girl meets world days. she loves seeing the woman she has become today. knows all of her albums from front to back, a diehard fan. her reaction to the tickets was priceless, she couldn't stop thanking her incredible mother.
she had the best three day weekend in nashville. mother-daughter bonding was something to two of them enjoyed which saddened rowyn at times. she would never say it out loud but she was jealous of their relationship.
rowyn yearned to have a loving dynamic with her mom. she knows her relationship with both her parents is different but she is okay with it. she loves them no matter what.
while the choir was singing their hearts out, pastor wyatt quietly came through the back doors with someone standing by his side. scarlett frowned, "mom, why is he here?!" she hissed
"i'm not sure, i thought wyatt was preaching today?"
they then noticed that a big group of people starting coming into the church, sitting on the left side filling up the first three rows that were seemingly reserved.
the family sat down with holly seeing scarlett and rowyn. both girls were stunned to see her here considering she attends a completely different church on the other side of town. she playfully smirked at them before turning her head back to the front of the church
holly's uncle was sitting next to wyatt clearly getting ready to preach. nova started wondering if it was a better idea to skip church today. she had an intuition that today's sermon wasn't going to be about the Lord...
when wyatt gave him the stage, everyone was silent. every eye in that church was following his move. he walked up to that wooden podium with confidence as he slickly opened up his black leather bible.
he gently tapped the microphone making sure it was working, "how are we all doing today?"
that question followed with a bunch of different replies mainly 'good'. pastor blake spoke again flipping to where they all were going to be getting their scripture reading for today, "if you all may please stand and go with me to Ecclesiastes 7:5."
everyone stood up around the same time with rowyn opening her bible knowing what exact page number to go to. she always studies her word every single day. rowyn scanned her finger across the verse as scarlett looked with her.
blake made sure everyone was there before reading, "and it says this. it is better for a man to hear the rebuke of the wise than to hear the song of fools."
somebody within his family loudly hummed, "you all may be seated." he announced with everyone proceeding to sit
anna leaned over to see nova looking directly at blake, she was thinking about what kind of message is he trying to convey. is it going to be a typical one or is he trying to be condescending in the house of the Lord?
blake is known to be a wishy washy type of preacher. everytime he comes over here, it is always something. "this sermon is for the young servants of God today." he cheekily smiled looking around making sure to look every youth in their eye
"many of you listen to secular music." he pointed starting to slowly walk down the steps. scarlett had her arms crossed, rowyn noticing her tense motioning. nova wrapped her arm around her shoulders, scarlett looking at her mom forcing a toothless grin
"and for those of you who don't know.... secular music is music that is intended for non religious people."
"amen!"
blake had his hands in his pockets walking in circles then looking directly at scarlett. "listening to witches and whores such as taylor swift and sabrina carpenter is the biggest sin of all." he informed pointing at her
many parents were looking at nova, she stood strong not paying attention to them. she rubbed her daughters arm for comfort. scarlett sat there looking like she was ready to storm out, holly was holding back laughter
a lot of churchgoers clapped in agreement including anna and rory. "i just want you kids to know...." blake chuckled yet again looking scarlett in the eye, "listening to those kind of artists and attending their concerts won't get you into the kingdom of heaven."
nova whispered, "okay honey. c'mon let's go." she patted scarlett on the back, the two of them got up storming out of the church.
everyone was paying attention, amelia got up running after them not caring what people would say. rowyn attempted to get out of her seat but her father's deadly glare was enough for her to stay seated.
blake will start coughing in three days for disrespecting our queens like that!! but in all seriousness.... what do you think of rowyn's family and parents? do you like them or no? why not, explain!! i want paragraphs!! what is your favorite things about this story? i'm intrigued thank you everyone for reading i love you all💕
