she noticed everything;
she just acted like she didn't.

A WARM LIGHT INVADED HER EYESIGHT. Soft murmurs stirred the green-haired beauty laying upon the bed awake. Her eyes fluttered open, gaze cast upon the faded grey ceiling, the smell of lavender making her sigh in content. Her eyes moved around the room lazily, taking in her surrounding.

She spotted her brother talking with All Might and an old lady, the two sitting on chairs whilst All Might laid in the bed beside her, torso wrapped in white bandages.

"Ivette!" exclaimed Izuku, noticing her consciousness.

Ivette winced, the pounding in her head reverberating his voice. "Too loud, Zuku," she muttered, moving to sit up. Her brother darted to her bed, wrapping his arms around her and helping her up. "Thanks."

"Here. Have some gummies," said the old lady, handing her a few colourful gummy bears.

Ivette rose a brow, glancing at Izuku.

"They'll help re-energise you," he explained. Ivette nodded, popping them all into her mouth, tastebuds purring at the various delightful flavours.

"How are you feeling?" asked All Might, offering her a shaky smile. Ivette glanced at him, nature permeating into the depths of her eyes, a promise of new beginnings and dangerous endings. The bandages wrapped around his torso captured her attention, the obvious displeasure shining as clear as the sun shone in the sky. "You gave us quite the scare."

"Alright." She looked at Izuku, noticing she was in a different outfit. "What happened to my clothes?"

"Oh! Uh, yours got ruined, so Uraraka gave you her spares."

Ivette hummed, gently flapping her arms under the long sleeves. The pants were a bit short for her (she was taller than the brunette), but it was comfortable, nonetheless. Ivette made a mental reminder to thank Uraraka the next time she saw her.

Sucking up his courage, Izuku finally asked the question weighing on his mind. "When'd you get your quirk?"

"Last year."

"L-Last year?!"

Ivette nodded. "The sludge monster attacked me, and my quirk manifested," she explained, pushing up the sleeve of her right hand, activating her quirk and watching as misty green tendrils curled around her fingers, swaying to a song no human could hear.

Izuku was speechless, so were the others.

"You should join the school," Recovery Girl said, sitting on her chair and facing the three on the bed. Her eyes were drawn to the emerald illumination in Ivette's. "You'll be a fine hero with that power."

Ivette couldn't agree more.

A scoffed slipped past her lips, and Ivette deactivated her quirk. She gripped the ends of the blanket, pushing it off her body and moving her legs to the side. "Believe me; a hero is the last thing I want to be right now."

"Huh? Why?"

Ivette didn't answer. Instead, she turned to her brother. "Can we go now?"

Izuku sighed, "yeah." He grabbed his bag, slipping it over his shoulder. The siblings bid goodbye to the two adults, the boy addressing them properly, while Ivette just nodded her thanks.

"How peculiar," mused Recovery Girl, watching the door slide shut. "They're the total opposite." All Might nodded in agreement. "It's a shame, though. She could do so much with a quirk like that."

"I'm just worried it'll be the opposite," All Might muttered, concerning the older woman. The hero had seen how the older Midoirya acted: maliciously and with no mercy. She was like Bakugo in a sense, just quieter and, as a result, deadlier. Except she had no earnest desire to be a hero.

He feared Ivette would go down the wrong path.

And God forbid that ever happens.

"Have a good evening," bid Iida, waving goodbye to the Midoriya twins. Uraraka stood beside him, reflecting his action with a wide grin, a blush plashed against her cheeks.

The two had waited for the twins, brightening up at the sight. They thanked Ivette for practically saving them, complimenting her heroics. Ivette only smiled, lips spread upwards forcefully. She thanked the brunette for her clothes, but Uraraka simply waved it off with a cheery smile.

"It's no problem!"

The four split up afterwards, walking in different directions to their houses.

Obliterated by the rapidly falling twilight, the lingering light of the night's sky, once salmon and purple, moulded into a vast expanse of jet-black, engulfing the city. A canopy of luminous stars materialised amongst the ocean of blackness. Some were dull, merely flickering into existence every now and then, whilst an adequate amount of shimmering stars decorated the dark, moonless night.

"Hey, Ivette."

"Yeah?"

"Why'd you hide your quirk?"

Tilting her head, Ivette gazed at the firmament above; sequin-silver stars, like scattered embers of a dying fire, winked down at her, illuminating the atramentous curtain of the sky. "I don't know," she admitted, a loose shrug tumbling off her shoulders. "I just did."

"Was it because of me?" Ivette glanced at her brother, seeing him walk with his head down, fingers grasped tightly around the straps of his bag. "Because I don't have a quirk?"

"You have one now," she pointed out, mirth dancing in her eyes as Izuku stammered, tripping over his words, face alight.

"Oh- yes! Uh, yeah, it-"

Ivette laughed, throwing her head back. The boy froze, gaze snapping towards his sister. Now, that was a sound he hadn't heard in a long time. Like ripples in a pond, shimmering outwards, her laughter embraced the astronomical objects watching over them fondly.

"I know," Ivette said, turning to look at him. "It's All Might's quirk, isn't it?"

Shock propagated through Izuku. "H-How do you know?"

Ivette tapped her head playfully.

"Telepathy."

"T-T-Telepathy?! SUGOI!" Izuku's eyes lit up, his body brimming with delight and excitement; the urge to take out his notebook and jot down everything he could about his sister's quirk was intense. "What else can you do?!"

"I'm not sure yet. I haven't figured everything out."

"Well–" Izuku grasped her hand, clasping it tightly–"we can figure it out together!"

Ivette watched her brother. Her heart felt awfully full, swelling with an exceptional warmth.

A soft smile broke out across her face.

"Yeah."

The entity in her head remained silent.

A pawn had moved forward on his chessboard, cornering his queen.

He didn't like that.

"Oh, and to what do I owe this pleasure?" Dressed in a pair of black sweatpants and a plain pale green top, Ivette folded her arms over her chest, leaning against the door of her family apartment. Shining radiantly under the sun, her eyes peered at the three boys standing before her, dressed in casual clothes, a feature that didn't disturb her as much as she wished it to.

"We wanted to talk," Todoroki said politely, shuffling under her piercing gaze.

To him, Ivette was absolutely divine. While his other mates were handsome, there was something about the girl that, he felt, put her above them all. She was flawless, from her hair all the way to her legs.

But his favourite part were her eyes.

They held a remarkable profundity of wisdom and knowledge, a depth in which intrigued him. Alluringly, she would blink from time to time, allowing her eyelashes to flutter like the wings of a butterfly. Bearing a colour of an ethereal shade of emerald green, Ivette's eyes were simply spellbinding. Both orbs held a coruscate gleam that enhanced their beauty.

"Oh? Izuku isn't here right now, but he'll"

"Not to that stupid nerd. To you, dipshit."

Ivette glared at the blond, lips pursing at the insult. However, she dropped it. This was Bakugo, after all. She was pretty sure he called his other soulmates stupid names.

"About?" she asked, leaning against the door frame.

"Us." Confusion painted her face, turning to face the redhead. Kirishima furrowed his brows. "Do you not know?"

"Know what?"

Bakugo huffed, already tired of the situation. "We're soulmates," he explained, lifting his arm to show where his three soulmate bands laid. "That's yours." He pointed to the faint green one.

"I know. I saw after the whole attack."

"Then why didn't you say something?" Todoroki asked, perplexed.

"Why did I have to?" Bakugo felt annoyance crawl through him, anger building up, and the need to blow something up was spiking. "Look, if that's all you came to say, then can I go back in? I've got work to do."

"Does it mean nothing to you?"

"Does what?"

Bakugo yelled in frustration, storming up to the girl. Kirishima reacted quickly, wrapping his arms around the boy and holding him back. "Calm down, Bakugo!"

Ivette's lips quirked upwards, amusement glistening in her orbs. "Listen," she started, capturing all their attention, "i'm going to be honest with you. I don't think this will work out." She motioned between them and herself.

"H-Huh?"

Ivette could see the faint glimmer of hurt passing through the boys' eyes, and a pang of regret struck her. But just as quick as it came, it left.

"What's that supposed to mean?" scowled Bakugo.

"Exactly as I said. I'm quite content on my own—" LIE. "I don't need soulmates, especially ones who're training to be heroes."

The sun that watched up above faltered, its rays lacking the extra warmth. It watched with a mournful expression, the hidden stars copying its looks. They could do nothing but watch as the group of soulmates, all meant to be together harmoniously, were torn apart by their newest equation who wished to have no part in their bond.

Ivette pretended to not be the kind who falls in love. In reality, she was just afraid to trust her heart to those who could easily tear it apart. Therefore, she began building a wall, a giant towering ice structure that circled around her heart, turning away and closing her heart to the promise of love that is ever so luring. For the world has taught her not to be caught in what she believed was not worth pursuing, to never do the things that led to many people's undoing.

"Oh, Kacchan," came the gentle, surprised voice of the youngest Midoriya. "And Kirishima, Todoroki. What are you all doing here?"

"Nothing," Ivette answered. "They were just leaving."

She turned away from the boys, shoving her emotions into a box and locking it with a key. Her eyes caught sight of the pain glimmering in Bakugo's eyes as she headed inside, and her heart clenched painfully.

It's for the best, she told herself.
