Chapter Six
"I heard the news," Fury started, walking inside with Cap next to him.
"And?" Clint continued.
Fury stopped in the middle of the lobby, looking at each of the Avengers that was present before him.
"All of you are under house arrest."
"For how long?" Nat questioned.
"Ninety days," Cap answered for her, which she slightly smiled to with a nod and Cap returned it.
"What are the conditions?" Sam made his presence known in the room this time, knowing he'd agree with this now if that's what it takes for him to stop being a fugitive.
"For ninety days, no one is allowed to come in and out of the compound. No missions. No casualties," Fury started, "We must gain their trust back, only then we'll talk about the accords. But for now, let S.H.I.E.L.D. handle the operations."
"That's it?" Clint retorted.
"This can only be done if all of you are here, but seeing as it's only the four of you then it might take longer than that." Fury started walking again, probably wanting to take a seat in the conference room, which he did not even two minutes later.
"Stark?" Steve questioned.
"I got him handled," Fury answered, "Bruce already agreed and he's on his way. Vision and Wanda are packing their bags as we speak. And lastly, Rhodes's taking a risk with Ross at the moment, let's hope he'll talk him out of it."
"What about Thor?" Natasha questioned.
"It's unknown whether the God of Thunder will appear himself," Fury informed.
"And Barnes?" The redhead continued, turning to look at Steve now.
"He's on his way," He answered.
"What about the kid?" Sam remembered, referring to Spider-Man.
"Stark will take care of that," Fury quipped.
YOUR POV
When I got past the doorman, I knew damn well that I'd have a good time. Not because of how a small apartment building look so luxurious, or maybe I wasn't just used to this kind of environment.
A week had passed since the events with Natalia, and to be honest, living in the States is much more expensive than in Ukraine, I also have no idea why I'm still alive and walking around — I mean it's a free country, I can do anything I want, and I get that, — But standing in a hallway, head hangs low as I waited for a certain guy that I've been following tracks of, seeing that he's an easy target and his pockets full, is way easier than to clean a toilet inside the prison, not to mention it's only a penny per bowl.
Instant money, I could still back out but no, that's not even on my plate. The surveillance camera was up the ceiling, where they ought to be. Good. Let them take a picture of me; I didn't care. I looked back to mark possible existence, and not even a second later, the doorknob moved, doors slightly creaking as the 'guy' proceeded to open it wide enough for him to pass through, with this, I had an opportunity to take a glance at his place. Plain, simple, empty. Maybe I was wrong about him, then why am I standing creepily behind him and slowly pulling a stack of money out of his pocket? He can't even get notice of my presence. Why would someone put a stack of money, carelessly, in their back pocket? Maybe they're dumb or should I just stop talking and just get this done already? Yeah, I would've done that by now, but the thing is, the kind of technique I used with this 'guy' was sloppy, which was a mistake.
"Take one step back and you're dead," The 'guy' suddenly threatened.
I stepped back, of course, I did. "Sorry, not dead." I sarcastically smiled as he turned around to face me. Wow, such a good-looking man. His jaw clenched, eyes traveling down to my hands that were playing with the money. "Where'd you get this stack of money?" I questioned, keeping the conversation light. He didn't answer. Fine. "Okay, thanks!" and that's when I started running, again.
When I passed the doorman this time, I was smiling widely. It went smooth, even though he was running after me and he was a lot faster than a normal 'guy' in their forty's would run — wait, is he even forty?
As I looked back to take another look, only to confirm if he looked forty—, "shit," he had a metal arm. I knew I recognized him from somewhere. Shut it!
You must not trip over. You must not trip. You must not trip.
But then, my head suddenly hit something hard that came out of nowhere, so of course, I blackout.
An hour or so, I woke up, more lightheaded than usual, and my head sore, I must've smashed my head hard.
"Good you're awake," The metal arm guy talked, almost making me jump as I adjusted my sight to him who was sitting next to me — wait where were we?
Cab. Where was he taking me?
"Where are we going?" I asked, staring at him suspiciously.
"I'm taking you to the cops," He answered, enough to make my eyes go wide.
"What? No, you're not," I protested. "You can't take me there."
"And why not?" He looked back at me and I paused for a moment. I know I knew this man, I just have to think enough to remember...right!
"James!" I nearly squealed, when I remembered.
"What?" He blurts out. Jackpot.
I smirked. "I know you. Right! You're James Barnes. Winter Soldier. Yeah, yeah, right, I'm right. You killed Stark's parents, and T'Challa's. Yep. Started the Civil War."
James suddenly looked away with an eye-roll, I've hit a nerve. "Shut up. I'm taking you to the cops."
I frowned. "Wait wait no, I'm sorry, I didn't do anything, it was just one dollar," a lie, "please don't take me to the cops." I hate begging, but it's the only way — wait, there is another way.
I scooted a little closer to him, close enough that our knees touched together. "Hey, James," I started slowly, taking his attention back to me. "You do understand that if you take me to the cops, you'd also have to come with me and surrender yourself over to the authorities," his eyebrows knitted together, it's working, "and if I were you, I wouldn't let Captain America's hard works go to waste," and then fake pout.
James sighed heavily, thinking it through. I know he knows that if he had taken me to the cops he eventually needs to reveal himself too, plus he couldn't just drop me out front of the police station, I could've run away which would give him another problem. Also, I still have his money.
He glared at me this time. "Not a word!"
It was a deadly silent ride, though I had no idea where he was taking me for some reason I just trusted him that he wouldn't take me to the cops. And for a moment I felt deja vu.
Flashback.
"But J-"
"It's alright," He cut me off immediately as he turned to face me. "Trust me on this one, alright, you're gonna be just fine."
I bore my eyes into him. "But I'm innocent, I had done nothing wrong, why must you believe her over me?!" I was getting angrier and I had never once yelled at my brother before. "Why James?! Is it because of love?!"
"You don't know what you're saying Y/N!" He whispered and yelled, jaw clenching, as he tried to lower his voice, so the frontman would not be bothered.
"Oh, but I do, and I'm sick of you lying to me about your feelings for her!" I pushed and he stayed silent. "I'm not blind James, I know when my brother's in love with that woman and I'm so sick of it!" He looked away from me this time because he knew no matter what he'll say, I'll know it was only a lie. "You're choosing her side instead of mine — your little sister."
End of flashback.
James pulled me out into the street, his hands tightly holding mine together behind me as he bid farewell to the taxi man. Letting me walk in front of him as he told me to only walk straight ahead. It was a long walk when he could've just let the cab take us directly to the drop point, but no, he had us walking for over 15 minutes.
"I said no casualties," A man approached us, just outside the building. Straight posture, a thick voice, and an eye patch on his other eye.
"She tried to rob me," James reasoned with a sigh.
"I did not, and can you let go of me," I yanked my hands from him, shooting him a glare after.
Looking around me, I saw a big logo on a wall 'A', It didn't take long for me to realize where I was. Avengers Compound.
Both men continued to stare at me, I suck at lying sometimes. "I did not do any shit!" I spat. "Alright fine, I did, but I swear it was one dollar! That's not so big."
I felt a burning stare on my skin and I exactly knew who it was but I paid them no attention.
"It's still considered stealing, and can you quit lying," James retorted, it was weird that he didn't correct the 'one dollar' excuse of mine, which I was about to pull off but then I didn't.
"Well, I beg your pardon. I gave it back to you, remember, you even gave it as a tip to that nosy taxi driver!" I quipped it was true, though I didn't give him back everything, only like twenty-five percent of it.
"He was doing his job," He defended the taxi driver.
Rolling my eyes. "Oh shut up," I snickered one more time, getting impatient before kicking his balls, and running off to where we came in. "Flip off, Winter Soldier!"
"Oh no you don't," He mumbled, running after me twice this day.
"Hey, Buck, rule number one, don't chase after girls!" I heard a man yell from behind him, who nearly made me look back so I could see who yelled that.
As my pulse picked up, my chest heaving up and down, I muttered, "Man, I hate cardio." Almost tripped over after that, and I knew James was getting closer yet I didn't stop.
Taking a glance at the sun, it was immediately covered by dark clouds and the sound of thunder boomed in, slowing my phase as I tried to decipher the sudden change of weather and so did James.
"I'd get inside if I were you two," The same man who yelled earlier stated, making me glance at him — It was Flacon, I tend to forget people's names but not their alias.
Enough of getting distracted, I picked up my phase again, constantly watching the clouds as I paid little to no attention to where I was running to.
And then, "Oops, sorry, a bit clumsy there," A man stated, right after I fell onto the ground with a grunt.
"Here, let me help you, miss," the man offered his hand as I take a look at him. Thor.
"Yeah, I know," I mumbled, ignoring his hand as I stand back up myself. Looking back at James, he had a grin on his face. Quickly turning my back, I bumped into Thor again but this time he got a hold of me before I hit the ground.
"Is this yours?" Thor asked, easily holding me by my waist.
"Yeah, — not really —, but yeah," James confirmed, making me roll my eyes.
Thor shrugged. "Well, here you go," he said handing me over to him.
"You're not giving me to him, wait no, stop, hey!" I protested but Thor didn't listen, instead, he gave me a forced smile. Must've hurt his ego cuz I didn't accept his hand.
"Just for once can you stop running?" James complained after he cuffed my hands together.
"And if I don't?" I challenged.
"I might just rethink taking you back to the cops," he answered, enough to shut my mouth.
Right back where we stood, I glared at the ground beneath me. This was not good.
"She should be arrested," The eyepatch guy — or should I just call him Fury? "I'm taking her to the police station after—"
"No!" James and I started in unison, causing Fury to glare at us. "There's no need," I followed up. "I already gave back his money so the case is closed. I'll just go ahead—"
"Nope, that's not happening," James cut me off. "You're a theft and if you managed to steal from me that doesn't stop you from stealing others."
"Wow, didn't know you had that in you," I commented, which made his eyebrows knit together. "I'm not explaining myself to you anymore or any of you," I looked at the rest of the superheroes while fiddling with the cuffs on my hands until they cracked open. "With no further ado, I'll have to excuse myself," I finished, handing the handcuffs back to James, finally, walking away from them this time.
"You're not going anywhere," Natasha interfered, stopping me shortly from my tracks.
"Because...?" I trailed off, amused at her act of bravery.
She swallowed thickly before continuing, "Because you've done something bad and you have to prove to us that you won't do it ever again."
"She does have a point," James followed up, making me roll my eyes. Of course, he has to agree with her.
"Alright, settle down," Stark interjected, getting my attention as I looked at him. "Miss...?"
"Peters," I finished for him. I didn't want anyone to know I'm related to Barnes even if it's only on paper.
"No first name?" He questioned and I shook my head. "Here's the deal, Ms. Peters, we won't take you to the cops, on one condition, you'll have to gain our trust or convince us — whichever you prefer — then we'll see if we will let you go under our noses."
I was amused at his brash self-confidence in the fact that he would have me saying yes.
"And if I don't want to?"
"Which is not an option," He replied with a smirk. "C'mon kid, you gotta say yes, it's a shame if you let yourself go to jail."
I've already been there.
"Stark," Fury warned, not liking an inch of his proposal.
"Fine," I sighed, and he boomed with a smile, "but, on one condition," he stayed silent waiting for me to finish, "I get something in return, not just my freedom."
"Alright, take your pick," He was faster than I had expected, he didn't even think twice.
With a smirk on my lips, I made a deal. "Good, I'll tell you what it is when I leave tomorrow morning."
