Prologue

Wendy watched the rain fall from the side of the curb without bothering to grab an umbrella or even a jacket to avoid getting soaked from head to toe. The black dress she was wearing had to be ruined now. She didn't care. She hated the dress.

Her long red hair was hanging loosely down her back, though she normally braided it or wore it in pigtails. Today she let it fall in her eyes so no one could see the hot tears streaming down her face

When the pain finally hit her, she gasped before letting out a muffled sob. Her breath escaped her lips in small white puffs in the freezing air.

"Wendy!" Came her dad's voice ringing through the air as he worriedly rushed down the steps of the funeral home.

"Get inside before you catch something!"

He yanked Wendy to her feet and began to guide her back inside when she began screaming and trying to push him away.

"Leave me alone!" She screamed, trying to pull away from her father's strong grip. It was no use since he was nearly three times her size.

"Everyone's worried, you need to get back inside."

"I hate it in there!" Wendy cried, her dad finally took her by the shoulders and sternly gazed into her emerald green eyes, his hard expression softened as he mumbled,

"...you have her eyes."

Wendy stared back at him, her chest was slowly rising and falling in agitation.

"Is that supposed to change anything?" She whispered.

He let go of her shoulders and this time Wendy didn't try to run.

"Don't you want to see her one last time, before..." his voice trailed off.

"I can't- I...I hate it in there, daddy!" Wendy cried out, wrapping her arms around him and burying her nose in his shirt.

Dan Corduroy didn't know what else to do but let the tears come.

So he held his daughter close to his side as they stood together, alone, in the rain.
