Cooking kielbasa over the fire, my mother turns to me and
Explains that this year isn't the same as those that came before.
Last year, we went to a block party, where
Everyone was eating, laughing, and talking,
But this year isn't the same.
Read the room, she tells me,
And realize that you are standing where we will make history.
This is a new time for all of us, and
I know that I have to do my part.
Open your mouth, little girl, and say what you know to be true.
New horizons are dawning.
