II. her mind is not only her's anymore
AFTER ANNABETH HAD left with reyna, and jason and piper had gone their own way into the city, karina, percy, frank, and hazel were the only ones left.
karina sighed and moved so that she was laying against percy's chest, pulling her legs up to her body, and curled herself against him, leaning her head back tiredly, glancing up at percy with hazy eyes.
percy wrapped his arms around her waist loosely, his fingers drumming on the sides of her stomach as he looked down at her with an eyebrow raised.
"tired?" he asked amusedly.
karina hummed in response, slowly nodding her head. "it's not even the end of the day and i already want to take a nap."
"you and me both, nina." frank said, who had moved to sit next to hazel.
percy let out a deep breath, and laid his head on top of karina's— something that she had learned he enjoyed doing— and looked over at frank and hazel.
"what do you guys think of them?" he asked the group, with a slightly nervous tone, as if he was scared he'd get a negative response.
karina moved so that she could be eye level with percy, and she smiled at him. "i think annabeth is a strong-ass woman for being able to keep up with you for five years before this."
percy glared at her. "i was not that bad of a child. i actually saved annabeth quite a few times, thank you."
karina rolled her eyes. "okay, and how many times did she save you?"
percy pursed his lips, knowing she was right. annabeth had saved his ass more times than he could count. he flicked her forehead. "you're so annoying," he said to her, but she just gave him an amused smile.
"you just know i'm right."
"whatever."
percy turned back to their other two friends, and hazel nodded at him. "i think they're trustworthy. they don't seem like they'd want to blow our camp up."
percy chuckled and nodded in agreement. "well, i don't know about piper and leo, but i know annabeth wouldn't."
frank nodded in agreement, but hazel shook her head, as if she was trying to rack her brain to figure out something. "i just can't— he looks just like sammy." she said, taking a deep breath.
karina looked at her with a sympathetic smile. "i don't know, hazel," she said. "maybe it's just a— "
"coincidence?" she asked, cutting her off.
karina stopped, and swallowed. "again, i don't know, it's just— maybe leo is a distant relative to him or something? i know that's really far fetched, but, you never know."
hazel considered this, and looked at her sadly. "yeah . . . maybe." she left it at that, and they settled back into a comfortable silence, basking in the distant chatter from the rest of the forum.
as they continued to sit there, percy had begun to braid small pieces of karina's hair, weaving the strands all the way down, and then taking it out, and then doing it all over again. karina relaxed at the gesture, and let her eyes rest as he continued to weave his fingers through her hair.
but, the moment was short lived, because as soon as percy had finished his third braid, an explosion blasted a new crater into the forum just beside them. a burning couch tumbled through the air. demigods scattered in panic.
karina stumbled to her feet, hazel, frank, and percy following soon after her, quickly backing up to try and see what just happened.
"what the hell just happened?" percy asked to nobody in particular, staring that the crater with a look of shock.
"no idea," karina breathed out. but then, she looked up just in time to see the argo II launch a second volley. its port ballista fired a massive spear wreathed in some sort of green fire, which sailed straight through the broken dome of the senate house and exploded inside, lighting up the building like a jack-o'-lantern. if anyone had been in there . . .
frank turned to percy with a clenched jaw. "i thought you said we could trust these guys?" he said angrily to percy.
percy looked at him in bewilderment, and frantically shook his head. "no— no! this isn't their doing, it can't be!"
"then who's is it?" hazel asked, looking at percy with pleading eyes, as if she was begging him to give her a good answer.
percy shook his head, his jaw set. "no. this wasn't my friends. i know it wasn't. you guys just have to trust me."
karina, frank, and hazel, all looked at each other for a moment, before nodding at him.
"we trust you, percy," frank said, and karina grabbed onto his hand, squeezing it softly.
percy gave a single nod. "okay, now we have to deal with them."
karina turned to where percy was staring, and what she saw was pure chaos. crowds were pushing and shoving. fistfights were breaking out.
karina knew that if weapons had been allowed in the city, percy and his friends would have already been dead. the roman demigods in the forum had coalesced into an angry mob. some threw plates, food, and rocks at the argo II, which was pointless, as most of the stuff fell back on to the ground.
"we have to go!" frank yelled to percy. as he saw the angry mob begin the swarm in the group, their focus set on percy.
percy nodded, and they began to run.
they ran all the way down the forum, and percy stopped them in front of a fountain, and he began to repel the angry romans with blasts of water.
karina also began to fight back, but with no intention to harm anyone.
she manipulated the grass under the legionaries to grow around their ankles, causing them to fall over, bringing other romans down with them as they went. soon, they began falling like dominoes, all of them piling on top of one another. it was almost funny, if they hadn't been in the situation they were in right then, she would've laughed.
karina noticed that several dozen romans had surrounded piper and jason, who were trying to calm them without much luck. piper's charm speak was useless against so many screaming, angry demigods. jason's forehead was bleeding, making karina's stomach drop. his purple cloak had been ripped to shreds. he kept pleading, "i'm on your side!" but the orange camp half-blood t-shirt didn't help matters— nor did the warship overhead, firing flaming spears into new rome. one landed nearby and blasted a toga shop to rubble.
karina glanced back at her boyfriend, and saw that his toga was in tatters as well, but he looked unhurt, making her mind ease slightly.
karina heard annabeth calling them as another explosion rocked the forum. this time the flash of light was directed overhead. one of the roman catapults had fired, and the argo II groaned and tilted sideways, flames bubbling over its bronze-plated hull.
karina noticed a figure clinging desperately to the rope ladder, trying to climb down. it was octavian, his robes steaming and his face black with soot.
as percy blasted the roman mob with more water, annabeth ran toward them, ducking a roman fist and a flying plate of sandwiches.
"annabeth!" percy called. "what—?"
"i don't know!" she yelled.
"i'll tell you what!" cried a voice from above. octavian had reached the bottom of the ladder. "the greeks have fired on us! your boy leo has trained his weapons on rome!"
"you're lying," annabeth said. "leo would never— "
"i was just there!" octavian shrieked. "i saw it with my own eyes!"
the argo II returned fire. legionnaires in the field scattered as one of their catapults was blasted to splinters.
"you see?" octavian screamed. "romans, kill the invaders!"
karina heard annabeth growl in frustration, and she felt the same. there was no time for anyone to figure out the truth. the crew from camp half-blood was outnumbered a hundred to one, and even if octavian had managed to stage some sort of trick (which she thought likely), they'd never be able to convince the other romans before they were overrun and killed.
"we have to leave," annabeth told percy. "now."
he nodded grimly. "karina, hazel, frank, you've got to make a choice. are you coming?"
karina scoffed. "well, duh."
hazel looked terrified, but she donned her calvary helmet. "of course we are. but you'll never make it to the ship unless we buy you some time."
"how?" annabeth asked.
hazel whistled. instantly a blur of beige shot across the forum. arion materialized next to the fountain. he reared, whinnying and scattering the mob. hazel climbed on his back like she'd been born to ride. strapped to the horse's saddle was a roman calvary sword.
hazel unsheathed her golden blade. "send me an iris-message when you're safely away, and we'll rendezvous," she said. "arion, ride!"
the horse zipped through the crowd with incredible speed, pushing back romans and causing mass panic.
karina felt a glimmer of hope. maybe they could make it out of here alive. then, from halfway across the forum, she heard jason shouting.
"romans!" he cried. "please!"
he and piper were being pelted with plates and stones. jason tried to shield piper, but a brick caught him above the eye. he crumpled, and the crowd surged forward.
"why is it always a brick?" karina muttered angrily, unsheathing her gladius from around her neck.
"get back!" piper screamed. her charmspeak rolled over the mob, making them hesitate, but karina knew the effect wouldn't last. karina, annabeth, and percy couldn't possibly reach them in time to help.
"frank," percy said. "it's up to you. can you help them?"
he swallowed nervously. "oh, gods," he murmured. "okay, sure. just get up the ropes now."
they lunged for the ladder. octavian was still clinging to the bottom, but percy yanked him off and threw him into the mob.
they began to climb as armed legionnaires flooded into the forum. arrows whistled karina's head. as explosion almost knocked her off the ladder. halfway up, she heard a roar below and glanced down.
romans screamed and scattered as a full-sized dragon charged through the forum— a beast even scarier than the bronze dragon figurehead on the argo II. it had rough gray skin like a komodo lizard's and leathery bay wings. arrows and rocks bounced harmlessly off its hide as it lumbered toward piper and jason, grabbed them with its front claws, and vaulted into the air.
"is that . . . ?" annabeth dragged out.
"frank," karina confirmed, a few feet a over her. "he has a few special talents."
"understatement," annabeth muttered. "keep climbing!"
without the dragon and hazel's horse to distract the archers, they never would have made it up the ladder, but finally they climbed past a row of broken aerial oars and onto the deck. the rigging was on fire. the foresail was ripped down the middle, and the shoulder listed badly to starboard.
leo stood amid-ships, calmly reloading the ballista. karina's gut twisted in horror. this was her home that he was firing on.
"leo!" annabeth screamed. "what are you doing?"
"destroy them . . . " he faced karina and annabeth. his eyes were glazed. his movements were like a robot's. "destroy them all."
all of a sudden, karina felt a sharp pain burst through her head, causing her to let out a strangled cry of surprise and pain, raising her hand to her head tightly.
she felt a pounding behind her eyes, and her vision became slightly blurry, but when she looked up, she saw percy tackle leo to the ground. his head hit the deck hard, and his eyes rolled up so that only the whites showed.
destroy it. destroy it all. a voice whispered in karina's head, and another stabbing pain shot through her head. all of a sudden, she felt as if her thoughts were becoming meshed with another's. the intrusive thoughts were dark, and evil, and all karina could think about was destruction, pain, suffering. she could feel her own mind slipping as the thoughts became more prominent, and bold. she stumbled back, gripping the side of the ship with one hand, the other, holding her head in distress as another bolt of searing hot pain pushed through her skull.
you can't fight me, karina ashwood. the voice hummed inside her brain, and she felt the sound echo throughout her whole body, making her ears ring.
"who are you?" she mumbled weakly, her whole body now leaning against the side of the ship as she began to feel dizzy, the pain only increasing as she tried to speak. her eyes were squeezed shut, but even with her sight gone, she could see the faint glow of bright green eyes in the distance of her vision.
oh, you know who i am, dear. the voice sounded like silk, but it also felt as if it were erupting her ear drums everytime she spoke. and soon enough, you shall know just how much control i have over you.
"stop it . . . " karina groaned. "please, it hurts."
the pain is only temporary, said the voice. eventually, it will be the only thing you feel. but, for now. enjoy your peace of mind. because soon, i will be the only thing your mind ever controls.
as soon as the the voice said her final word, the ship groaned, and shot up at a horrifying angle. karina immediately felt the stabbing pain's subside and her own thoughts return as she stumbled onto the deck, grabbing a hold of the side of the ship as the argo II shot into the clouds. it felt as if someone had ripped a dark cloak off of her mind, releasing it from the evil and horrible things that had plagued it just moments ago. she felt lighter, and her vision was clear, but the pain she had just experienced was still fresh in her mind, and she could feel it pulsating all throughout her body.
karina stayed put like that for a minute, sitting on the deck with her body tensed up into a ball, her eyes were sealed shut, and her hands were holding her head as if they were the only things keeping it upright. even thought the heavy pain had gone, her head still pounded, and her whole body felt as if it had been dunked in ice cold water, leaving her even more stoic than before.
she hadn't realized how long she'd been sitting there until she heard the sound of fast approaching footsteps coming toward her, kneeling down to the ground as to get level with her.
"karina," percy said nervously. "hey, rina, what happened?"
he gently removed her hands from her head, taking them into his own, and she lifted her head from in between her legs, looking at him with a terrified expression.
she didn't speak. she couldn't find the words to say anything. she was scared that if she even moved, the pain might come back.
percy took one of his hands and placed it delicately on her check, tracing his thumb over it softly. "talk to me, rina," he whispered, concern washing over his features as he saw how frightened karina had become. he'd never seen her like this, so scared, stoic, it scared him.
karina swallowed. "i heard it again," she said, her voice shaky, and barely audible.
"heard what?" he asked softly.
"the voice," she responded, fear trickling through her mouth.
percy's eyes widened slightly, but he kept his composure. "the same one you heard back in alaska?"
she nodded, and percy pulled her up to her feet with a sudden pull of her arms, making her stumble into him in surprise.
"we need to talk to annabeth about this," percy insisted, wrapping an arm securely around her so she doesn't fall. "this can't keep happening."
karina immediately shook her head, but it felt as if her brain rattled against it as she moved, so she abruptly stopped the motion. "no. not right now. i— i'm already starting to feel better."
that wasn't a total lie. the cold feeling that had washed over her had begun to fade, and she had stopped shaking when percy came over to her. but, she still felt mentally unstable, for the most part. the feeling of someone else entering her body was still fresh, and she felt extremely skittish, as if the entity that entered her might still be around, waiting to attack.
percy licked his lips. "but it's happened twice now. we need to see if she knows anything that may be the reason to this."
"yes," karina agreed. "but later. we need to deal with leo first."
percy sighed, as if he didn't want to agree, but knew she was right.
"fine," he said flatly, and grabbed her hand. "let's go see what's happening inside."
they both walked in together, and karina tried her best to ignore the pounding in her head as they approached annabeth and frank, who were both standing over a still-unconscious leo.
"piper's downstairs with jason," annabeth informed them. "he's passed out too. a head injury."
karina began to step away from percy, making her way to the stairs. "i can go and help them— "
"no." annabeth cut her off, making her look at her in confusion.
she cleared her throat. "sorry, it's just, percy told me that you're good at talking to people. getting them to open up. so, i wanted you to stay up here and try and talk to leo."
karina swallowed. she wanted nothing more than to go downstairs and be with jason, but she knew that she was more needed up here.
she swallowed, and nodded. "yeah, you're right."
annabeth nodded. "good." she turned to percy. "can you go downstairs and try and see what you can do? i don't think piper's very skilled in healing."
percy sighed and nodded, shrugging his shoulders sarcastically. "guess i'm not needed here."
annabeth rolled her eyes. "shut up, seaweed brain."
he gave her a teasing smile, and turned to give karina a quick kiss, placing his hand under her chin softly as she reciprocated the gesture, and then he placed a delicate kiss on her forehead.
percy then turned and descended down the stairs, and just as his body went out of view, she heard a groan come from the floor, and saw that leo was slowly awakening, rubbing his hand over his forehead.
"gods, ow," he muttered as he ran his hand over his head, not realizing that there were three other people in the room with him.
frank awkwardly cleared his throat, and leo snapped his head up, looking at the three of them with wide eyes. "oh." he said nervously, looking at the three of them with a frightened expression.
"i need you to explain what happened," annabeth said hardly. "as best as you can."
leo sighed, and began to tell the group what happened. but, it wasn't much. he seemed to be struggling to say anything at all.
once he had finished, annabeth still didn't look pleased. "one more time," she said. "exactly what happened?"
leo slumped against the mast, and choked back a sob. "i don't know. it's fuzzy."
karina hadn't noticed that a goat man— faun, sorry,— had entered the room as well, who was glaring at leo with a baseball bat wrapped around his hands. (did he carry that everywhere?)
annabeth crossed her arms. "you mean you don't remember?"
"i . . . " he swallowed. "i remember, but it's like i was watching myself do things. i couldn't control it."
the faun tapped his bat against the deck. in his gym clothes, with his cap pulled over his horns, he looked just like a regular P.E teacher. the way the faun was glowering, karina wondered if the coach was going to order leo to do push-ups.
"look, kid," the faun said, "you blew up some stuff. you attacked some romans. awesome! excellent! but did you have to knock out the satellite channels? i was right in the middle of watching a bag match."
"um," karina said. "not excellent, but, okay."
"coach," annabeth said. "why don't you make sure all of the fires are out?"
"but i already did that."
"do it again."
the faun— or saytr— trudged off, muttering under his breath. even he wasn't crazy enough to defy annabeth.
annabeth knelt next to leo, and motioned for karina to as well. she knelt down next to leo slowly, giving him a comfortable smile of reassurance, before annabeth began to speak.
"leo," annabeth said calmly. "did octavian trick you somehow? did he frame you, or— "
"no." he interrupted. "the guy was a jerk, but he didn't fire on the camp. i did."
frank scowled. "on purpose?"
"no!" leo squeezed his eyes shut, and karina squeezed his forearm softly, trying to get him to calm down. "well, yes . . . i mean, i didn't want to. but at the same time, i felt like i wanted to. something was making me do it. there was this cold feeling inside me— "
"a cold feeling," karina's tone darkened, and she recoiled slightly. she sounded almost . . . scared.
"yeah," leo said. "why?"
from belowdecks, percy called up, "rina, annabeth, we need you guys."
oh, gods, karina thought. please let jason be okay.
karina saw the worried look wash over leo's face, and she knew that he was thinking the same thing as her.
"he'll be fine," karina reassured him, her expression softening. "frank, we'll be back. just . . . watch leo. please."
frank nodded.
annabeth and karina began to make their way belowdeck in silence, and as they reached jason's room, their expressions dropped.
he looked sickly. his face was flushed, and pale, and his head had a welt the size of a golf ball sitting just below his hairline. he was knocked out completely, and piper sat with him with a worried expression, gripping his hand tightly and running her hands through his hair.
annabeth looked at percy. "he's, uh, breathing, right?"
percy rolled his eyes. "yes, wise girl, of course he's breathing. i thought you were the smart one here?"
she glared at him. "i am. but you're also not the doctor here. so i had to make sure."
percy huffed indignantly and went to stand behind karina, pulling her back into his chest and wrapping his arms around her stomach, leaning his head down on her shoulder.
karina looked at him amusedly, craning her head up slightly to kiss his temple, before walking forwards toward jason, pulling percy along with her as she went.
"how long has he been out for?" karina asked piper.
she took a deep breath, and karina noticed that piper had dried tear streaks on her cheeks, leading her to believe that she had been crying before they came in. but, she would never point it out, obviously. "he dropped unconscious right as he got hit."
karina grimaced, and shook her head. "jason's always getting hit by bricks. this is the third time it's happened."
"third?" piper asked incredulously.
karina nodded. "the first time was technically my fault, because i was trying to drop green confetti and glue on him when he was walking out of the barracks, but i slipped and knocked a brick off of the roof and it fell on him."
annabeth, piper, and percy all looked at her with looks of disbelief and confusion, and she just raised her hands in defense.
"what?" she asked defensively. "i didn't do it on purpose."
annabeth shook her head with a small smile on her face, and turned back to jason, analyzing the welt on his forehead.
"i would say just to keep an ice pack on it for now. there's not much else we can do to fix it until he wakes up."
piper nodded in understanding, and percy then turned to karina and annabeth, asking, "so, what happened with leo?"
karina chose to explain it, telling him about what leo said. when she finished, percy expression was hardened.
"so he did fire the ballista?" he asked angrily.
annabeth and karina both nodded, and percy's jaw tightened. "i can't believe it," he muttered to himself.
"i . . . i don't think it was his fault, though," annabeth said. "he was saying something how he could see himself doing it, but couldn't do anything to stop it."
percy's eyebrows furrowed. "what?"
karina nodded. "i don't think it was leo who fired. it was someone using him."
annabeth pursed her lips. "let's go back upstairs and check on them. piper, are you okay with staying down here?"
she nodded. "of course. i'd rather stay with him anyway."
annabeth smiled softly in return, though, karina could tell it was slightly forced, and her, percy, and annabeth all began to walk back upstairs.
once leo saw them, he immediately asked, "is jason— "
"he's resting," annabeth said. "piper's keeping an eye on him, but he should be fine."
percy gave leo a hard look. "karina and annabeth said you did fire the ballista?"
"man, i— i don't understand how it happened. i'm so sorry— "
"sorry?" percy growled.
karina put a hand on her boyfriend's chest. "we'll figure it out later. right now, we have to regroup and make a plan. what's the situation with the ship?"
leo's legs trembled. he told them about the damage and the supplies they needed.
he was bemoaning the shortage of celestial bronze when something began to whir and squeak.
"perfect," leo sighed with relief.
"what's perfect?" annabeth asked. "i could use some perfect about now."
leo managed a smile. "everything we need is one place. frank, why don't you turn into a bird or something. fly down and tell your girlfriend to meet us at the great salt lake in utah."
after that, they began their journey. karina passed the time by going downstairs again and trying to make conversation with piper, who seemed like she needed some cheering up. they both exchanged stories about each other, and jason, and began warming up to each other quite quickly. she told piper about all of the pranks her and jason would pull on octavian, and how they'd sneak out at night to go swimming in the river— though, karina usually had to force him out since jason wasn't much of a 'rule breaker.'
once they got there, it wasn't a pretty landing. with the oars damaged and the foresail torn, leo could barely manage a controlled descent. karina had strapped herself below with the others— except for coach hedge, who insisted on clinging to the forward rail, yelling, "YEAH! bring it on, lake!" leo stood astern, alone at the helm, and aimed as best he could.
after they felt the crash landing of the argo II placing itself into the lake, leo rang the all clear bell, and they all got up, piper going back to jason's room, while karina, percy, annabeth, and frank, all made their way into the mess hall, sitting down at the dining table.
karina could tell leo did his best on the lounge. the cupboard was lined with magic cups and plates— most likely from camp half-blood— which would fill up with whatever food or drink you wanted om command. there was also a magical ice chest with canned drinks, perfect for picnics ashore. the chairs were cushy recliners with thousand-finger massage, built-in headphones, and sword and drink holders for all your demigod kicking-back needs. there were no windows, but the walls were enchanted to show a place that karina guessed was camp half-blood. there was a beach, a forest, strawberry fields— it looked beautiful.
karina looked to her left to see percy staring longingly at a sunset view of a hill, where a golden fleece glittered in the branches of a tall pine tree.
"so we've landed," percy said, putting his arm on the back of karina's chair. "what now?"
frank plucked on his bowstring. "figure out the prophecy? i mean . . . that was a prophecy ella spoke, right? from the sibylline books?"
"the what?" leo asked.
frank explained how ella was freakishly good at memorizing books. at some point in the past, she'd inhaled a collection of ancient prophecies that had supposedly been destroyed around the fall of rome.
"that's why you didn't tell the romans," leo guessed. "you didn't want them to get hold of her."
percy kept staring at the image of the hill. "ella'a sensitive. she was a captive when we found her. i just didn't want . . . " he made a fist. "it doesn't matter now. i sent tyson an iris-message, told him to take ella to camp half-blood. they'll be safe there."
annabeth laced her fingers. "let me think about the prophecy— but right now we have more immediate problems. we have to get this ship fixed. leo, what do you need?"
"the easiest thing is tar." it seemed that leo was glad to change the subject. "we can get that in the city, at a roofing-supply store or someplace like that. also, celestial bronze and lime. according to festus, we can find both of those on an island in the lake, just west of here."
"who's festus?" karina muttered to herself.
"we'll have to hurry," hazel warned. "if i know octavian, he's searching for us with his auguries. the romans will send a strike force after us. it's a matter of honor."
everyone's eyes went to leo. "guys . . . i don't know what happened. honestly i— "
annabeth raised her hand. "we've been talking. we agree it couldn't have been you, leo. that cold feeling you mentioned . . . i felt it too. it must have been some sort of magic, either octavian or gaea or one of her minions. but until we understand what happened— "
frank grunted. "how can we be sure it won't happen again?"
"i'm fine now," leo insisted, but he didn't look so sure. "maybe we should use the buddy system. nobody goes anywhere alone. we can leave piper and coach hedge on board with jason. and annabeth, i need you to run some tests on the engines below deck. send one team into town to get tar. another team can go after the bronze and the lime."
"split up?" percy said. "that sounds like a really bad idea."
"it'll be quicker," hazel put in. "besides, there's a reason a quest is usually limited to three demigods, right?"
annabeth raised her eyebrows, as if reappraising hazel's merits. "you're right. the same reason we needed the argo II . . . outside camp, seven demigods in one place will attract way too much monstrous attention. the ship is designed to conceal and protect us. we should be safe enough on board; but if we go on expeditions, we shouldn't travel in groups larger than three. no sense alerting more of gaea's minions than we have to."
percy still didn't look happy about it, but he took karina's hand. "as long as you're my buddy, i'm good."
hazel smiled. "oh, that's easy! frank you were amazing, turning into a dragon! could you fly karina and percy into town for tar?"
frank opened his mouth like he wanted to protest. "i . . . i suppose. but what about you?"
"i'll ride arion with sa— with leo, here." she fidgeted with her sword hilt. "we'll get the bronze and the lime. we can all meet back here by dark."
frank scowled. obviously, he didn't like the idea of leo going off with hazel.
"leo," karina said. "if we get the supplies, how long to fix the ship?"
"with luck, just a few hours."
"fine," annabeth decided. "you guys will meet back here as soon as possible, but stay safe. we could use some good luck. that doesn't mean we'll get it."
