Yunho awoke some time later and took a moment to look around the room. When he sensed that San was asleep, he slipped out bed and returned to the others. He exchanged a quick glance with Mingi and looked away to hide any embarrassment he was feeling at the moment.
He would deny it right now, but he could understand why he might have been with San in this other life. San was incredibly attractive with his sharp features but soft expressions.
None of that would matter though if things didn't work out the way Mingi wanted them to. If San was on the Pack's side, then that made them enemies.
And Yunho would do whatever he could to destroy the Pack after all the pain and suffering the had forced on him and his sister.
"How is he?" Mingi asked.
"Sleeping." Yunho chewed on his bottom lip and when to stand next to the computer. "What is that?"
"Hongjoong's shop."
Yunho looked at Mingi with wide eyes. He could hear the strain in the thief's voice every time he mention Hongjoong and this time was no different. It made him pray that Hongjoong would believe their crazy tale because he wasn't sure he could handle seeing what happened to Mingi if he was rejected.
"I think the signal is some kind of code." Yeosang muttered while his fingers flew across his keyboard. He had a couple of screens that looked like they were running some kind of analysis while he was searching the local internet for any information he could find on Hongjoong.
How he was managing to do all this at once, Yunho had no idea, but he found it impressive.
"I'm getting some kind of interference though..."
"What?" Jongho leaned forward to look at the screens.
"It's almost like there is something trying to block my scans or..." Yeosang cursed and immediately closed out of everything. "Check everything outside, now." He pushed himself away from his desk and ran to the front door of their loft.
Yunho and Mingi watched as Jongho followed him and heard them running down he stairs. They stepped out onto the landing and leaned over to see Yeosang looking at a large, fenced off area that looked to be their main power source.
"What's wrong?" Mingi called down to him.
Yeosang didn't answer.
"It's just one thing after another." Mingi leaned against the railing and sighed. "I swear, when this is over I'm finding a home somewhere in the middle of the wilderness where I don't have to deal with people."
Yunho snorted and shook his head. "I may just join you there." The pair exchanged a grateful look.
"Those bastards!" Yeosang said from where he was still in fenced area.
Jongho ran over from where he had been examining the setup he had for his fighting right while Mingi and Yunho leaned over the side of the rail again.
"What is it?" The fighter stepped aside when Yeosang walked out holding something in his hands. Yunho could pick out a pair of tweezers, and something being held in them, but he was more concerned with the enraged look on Yeosang's face
"This is how he knew where we were!" Yeosang looked up at the other two as he hurried over to the stairs. "Somehow someone planted a bug and I'd be willing to bet it was that night we lost power."
"Fuck. I knew that wasn't just a freak accident." Jongho clenched his fists. "Can you trace it back?"
"Oh definitely. They don't know who they are messing with. But I won't have long. I'm sure they know I found it so they will either try to erase it or wait and see what I do with it. Maybe we can use this to our advantage and find out where they have Seonghwa." Yeosang looked at Mingi and nodded. "But I'm sure they have eyes on us. Yunho, maybe you should take a drive and see if you see anything suspicious."
"I can do that." He stretched his arms over his head and grinned, then rubbed his hands together. "Anything in particular you want me to keep an eye out for?"
"If anyone is tailing you for one." Mingi grabbed the back of his neck with both hands and leaned against the railing again. "Don't get cocky. But just see if anyone stays in the same place for too long, both civilian and in a vehicle. If they are on to us then we may need to move."
"I will not le-" Jongho started to say, but Yeosang cut him off with a pointed look. "But Sangie!" He said, following after the hacker with a slight whine. "I worked so hard for this."
"And you can always set up another one in a different location.
"But I like here." Jongho started to tug on the sleeve of Yeosang's shirt while the older blatantly ignored him.
Mingi snorted and covered his mouth with his hand when Yunho glanced at him. "Maybe we can figure out a way to fortify this place or something?" He suggested after collecting himself.
"No, there's too much open space downstairs." Yeosang sat in front of his computer and pulled forward a stand that was connected to it so he could drop the thin ring onto it. But before it actually fell all the way, it was surrounded by a laser web that kept it suspended in the air. On one of his screens a scan of it appeared and he started typing quickly once more.
Jongho stayed behind him for a long moment before storming past all of them and marching back downstairs.
"Don't mind him." Yeosang was still looking at his screen but his voice was a lot softer when he spoke. "He worked hard to get this place up and running and it's really the only place he's ever called home. Depending on what I find, I'm hoping we can just leave without drawing attention here so nothing happens."
"We'll do what we can to protect it." Yunho promised. He pulled his car keys out of his pocket and started to leave when San poked his head out of the room.
He looked a little dazed and confused, then shrank back when everyone turned to look at him. "Hi..."
"How are you feeling?" Yunho stepped forward.
"Tired. What are you guys doing?" San lifted a hand and rubbed at the headband protecting the chip's influence.
"Trying to figure out our next move." Mingi said. He shoved his hands in his pockets and shifted in place. "Do you remember anything now?"
"No..."
"That's ok. You're mind was always a little fuzzy after any kind of incident." Mingi gave him a sympathetic smile. "How are you feeling after talking with Yunho? I know this is a lot to take in."
"I don't really know... But I guess it makes sense? Mercer is a pretty fucked up person, I mean, after seeing how he treats Wooyoung." San finished his statement as if he were talking to himself, but the atmosphere in the room instantly shifted.
"Wh..." Mingi choked on his words and he pulled his hands from his pockets and extended them in front of him as if he were reaching for something. "What did you just say?"
"About Mercer? He's an awful person honestly. I only tolerate him because he's Seonghwa's father." A dark look flashed across his eyes and Yunho felt a chill run down his spine. He could see why San was so lethal.
"N-No... Th-The name."
Yunho hurried forward and placed a hand on Mingi's shoulder to try and comfort him.
"What, Wooyoung?" San looked even more confused now as he looked around the room. Even Yeosang had stopped what he was doing to look at Mingi. His eyes were glistening with tears as well.
"H-H-He's ok?" Mingi lifted one of his hands to his mouth. "Y-Y-You've seen him?"
"I mean, I wouldn't say he's ok exactly..." San twisted his fingers together and looked down at the ground.
At that, Mingi fell to his knees and started to sob. He buried his face in both hands and started to shake his head back and forth.
"Min..." Yunho crouched next to him and Yeosang hurried over as well.
The thief couldn't even form any words. Yunho cringed and leaned forward to rest his forehead against Mingi's shoulder.
Out of everyone, he had always expressed the most worry for Wooyoung. And now finding out that he was right where Mingi didn't want him to be... Yunho couldn't blame Mingi for breaking down like this.
"Is he... like us?" San asked softly from the corner he was now standing in.
Yunho lifted his head and nodded. "Yes. He was a part of the team. Mingi had hoped he would stay out of the Pack's clutches. He's worried this Mercer will do something to him?"
San paled and pressed his lips together and Yunho already knew what that meant. Mercer had already done something. All of Mingi's fears were coming true.
"Why does he hate him so much?" San tilted his head a little and started scratching his head a little.
Yeosang noticed this and started mumbling under his breath about getting a better fit. He only left Mingi's side when he got a nod from the thief.
Mingi sniffed a few times and used his sleeves to clean off his face before straightening his back. He stayed on his knees and sat back on his ankles, then locked eyes with San. "Because in his eyes, Wooyoung ruined his plans. He had wanted Seonghwa to go back in time with him so that he remembered everything, not me. That way the could rule together and be unstoppable. But Seonghwa met us and everything changed." Mingi closed his eyes and a small smile tugged at his lips as some memory flashed before his eyes. "Everything would have been so perfect if it weren't for that damn machine. And we almost had him too... But he blamed Wooyoung for taking his son away from him. So... he tried to kill Wooyoung... And Seonghwa sacrificed himself."
San gasped and slapped his hands over his mouth while shaking his head quickly. "No..."
"Because of that, Mercer's plan was ruined. Wooyoung..." Mingi choked on a sob again and lifted his fists to press them against the side of his head. "He begged me to fix things... and Hongjoong... H-H-He said it was-s ok. So I ran for the but-t-ton too. So now we b-both remember what happened, which means Mercer had to relive watching his son die over and over..."
"That explains so much..." San whispered and sank to the floor. "We could hear him shouting 'It's all your fault' all the time, but we never knew what he was talking about."
Mingi slowly lowered his hand and his face hardened into a glare. "You... know?"
"Now, Mingi, don't." Yeosang warned, moving to stand between him and San. "You know things are different now. It sounds like San is, was, fully integrated into the Pack."
"But you know, and you've done nothing to try and help him?" Ming's voice held the hint of a growl to it. Yunho grabbed his shoulder and was prepared to tackle him to the ground if needed.
"I..." San looked terrified from where he was pressed against the wall and looked to Yunho for a second. "I didn't know how. He was always at Mercer's side. There was no way to get to him. If all this is true, and Mercer remembers everything that happened, I think he must have found Wooyoung when he was still a boy because all of my memories of the Pack and Mercer have Wooyoung in them. And there is no going against Mercer if you don't want to be punished or killed."
Mingi hesitated for a moment, then relaxed back into Yunho's touch. "That would explain why I couldn't find him... I should have guessed that Mercer would take every precaution to make sure he got what he wanted. He must be taking out years of torture on him..." His head snapped up to look between Yeosang and Yunho. "We have to get him out of there."
"Ok, we can work on that." Yeosang pressed his lips together. "Let me finish this, we need to get San set up with a better headband, and then we can start planning."
"That is, if you're going to stay with us?" Yunho asked, looking directly at San.
The younger boy looked between all of them and chewed on the inside of his cheek. Then he let out a small nod. "If you can promise me protection, because I don't see him being very happy if I am what you say I am."
Yunho didn't miss the dark thought flash across his eyes and made a mental note to ask him about it later, but he waited for Mingi to say something before saying anything himself.
"Of course we can. We are going to make all of this right, I promise." Mingi let out a long sigh and adjusted so that he was sitting cross-legged on the floor and he could rest his head in his hands. "I'm sorry, I don't mean to be so emotional. We have work to do. Just give me a few minutes and I'll be fine."
"Ok, I'll go take that drive then." Yunho offered. He stood up and started heading to the door when he heard movement behind him. When he turned around, San was run next to him looking up with big eyes. "Are you ok?"
San drifted a little closer and nodded. "Can... Can I go with you?"
Yunho looked at Mingi first, but he must not have heard the question, so he turned to Yeosang. The hacker hesitated for a moment, but the look in his eyes told Yunho to just be careful.
And he knew he needed to be. San hadn't proven that he was trustworthy yet, but with all the information being dumped on them and with how Mingi had just reacted, he couldn't blame San for being nervous.
"Sure. We won't be gone long."
"Be careful. Oh," Yeosang opened one of his desk drawers and tossed a walkie-talkie at him. "They can't be hacked, but I've upgraded them to be long range. Just press the button on the side to talk to me if you need anything. These are probably going to be the best thing for us right now."
"Got it. We will be back soon." Yunho started down the stairs, taking them quickly, and smiled to himself when he sensed San right behind him. It was like he had a second shadow now.
Jongho was laying on his back in the middle of the fighting ring with his eyes closed, so Yunho continued past and led the way to where he had his car hidden.
So far he felt like he hadn't done much to help Mingi out, so he hoped he could gain something from surveying the area.
Any information had to be good news for now... There had to be something that could help them move forward.
Because right now, Mingi's mission seemed impossible.
