Chapter Twenty-Three

Ichimatsu sighed as he parked Akari's wheelchair beside one of the park benches. Sitting down, he buried his face in his hands, not wanting to make eye contact for some reason.

"Ichimatsu," Akari said, breaking the silence that had lasted their entire walk there. And even though it was a short walk, it had seemed like a million years. Silence always seemed to have a strong effect on time. "I need to ask you something important."

"What..." Ichimatsu mumbled, still keeping his face in his hands. "What could a dead girl possibly want to ask me...?"

"I'm serious, Ichimatsu!" Akari laughed a little, trying to lighten the mood, but she failed. Ichimatsu wasn't humored the least bit.

"Like I wasn't serious as well..?" Ichimatsu asked, exhaling loudly through his nose as he looked up at Akari.

"Have you forgiven anyone?" Akari asked calmly.

"Why the heck do you want me to forgive someone so badly? Why me? Why can't you just bother someone else?" Ichimatsu spat bitterly.

Akari sighed quietly, then replied softly, "So I see..."

"Why do you refuse to answer any of my questions?" Ichimatsu snapped.

"That doesn't matter..." Akari replied quietly, clutching the pink blanket on her lap tightly, holding on to something. "But I need to tell you something. I want you to really consider forgiving...whoever they are..."

Ichimatsu narrowed his eyes at Akari, then stared at the soft green grass around the park bench.

"I am not a human," Akari said wispily. "I am a guardian angel that Homura created in her mind as a young child. Out of pure loneliness, she created me, placing all of her burdens into one pure figment in her mind. She thought that if her guardian angel helped carry her burdens, she could keep on going. But as Homura grew older, her belief in me grew so strong that she gave me a name. She named me after the younger baby sister she was supposed to have. Akari. The child who died in her mother's womb. Of course, after she gave me a name, on her way to school each day, she would walk down the street, talking to me. And eventually, after the other kids her age began to make fun of her for this, I had to make my existence become real. Homura's ideas about me had grown so insane, that the entire world could see me. I made myself look just as Homura imagined me."

"But how did..." Ichimatsu muttered. "how did you just come into existence if you were only her imagination?"

"I was already her guardian angel in the first place, Ichimatsu," Akari sighed. "So, when she imagined a guardian angel, I knew I had to take that place. I had to be everything she ever wanted in a sister. Her burdens were too heavy for me to carry in the real word though. Despite having angel wings in the sky, on Earth, I had to remove them. And since I had relied on them ever since Homura imagined me, placing her burdens on me, I forgot how heavy they really were. I was wished into this world as a cripple, weighed down by the burdens of Homura. But as I went on in life with Homura, I realized that my existence was beginning to make her depressed. All she ever wanted was to see her sister, Akari, happy and healthy, living the dream life. But, no, here I was, weighed down with Homura's growing burdens. By the time I was hospitalized, Homura began to lose all faith and hope in life. She questioned if her existence even meant anything. And despite having met Jyushimatsu, she killed herself. And by doing that, fewer people could see me."

Ichimatsu felt his heart beginning to thud harder and harder. Things were finally starting to make a little bit of sense.

Akari lifted up her blanket, revealing her feet and ankles.

"Do you see this?" she asked, pointing at her ankles. They were both discombobulated, twisted up in such ways, it made sense why she couldn't walk.

Ichimatsu nodded his head. "They don't look right...almost like you were hurt very badly and were never given the right medical treatment..."

"I was hit by a car in the future," Akari said with a bitter laugh. "Because the driver couldn't see me. I was invisible to them because of Homura. I was surprised when your brother, Jyushimatsu, could still see me. It seemed as if loved ones were just...slowly losing all hope in me. You know? Like they just gave up once Homura had gone. I had been hospitalized for a very long time...and once Homura left, it's like everyone else did too. I only saw the doctors, my parents, and Jyushimatsu. I used to have other people visit me...Like kids from the school I attended."

"You went to school...?" Ichimatsu asked, slightly shocked now. "But why..? It's not like you were exactly a child, right?"

"But Homura's parents didn't know that. When I was wished into the world, it was like I had always been there. But, of course..once Homura died, they lost all hope. And in case you didn't know, hope is was keeps a guardian angel alive. I began to store up hope once I realized I didn't have much longer to live. This was a few months before I met Jyushimatsu for the first time. I took hope from all of your souls and placed them into birds. Because, for some reason, their souls were filled with so much hope...except for yours. Because you saw no hope for yourself. Your brothers saw hope in themselves and each other. That hope from their five souls was so strong, that it would be enough to create an entirely new soul of hope for a future guardian angel. But those birds had minds of their own, you know. Since they were pretty much your brothers...they loved you to death. They sacrificed their future as being one complete pure angel, to give you your life back."

Akari, reached out and grabbed Ichimatsu by his shoulders, staring into his eyes.

"Do you even know your brothers?" she asked worriedly, her eyes swimming with tears.

"I-I..." Ichimatsu muttered, trying his best to even think of what his brothers could possibly be other than jerks. "No..."

Akari inhaled then reached her hand under her pink blanket, grabbing onto something.

"I hate to do this, but..." Akari began, her voice trembling as well as her entire body. She briskly pulled a gun out from under her blanket. "I'm sorry..."

"THIS ISN'T FUNNY, AKARI!" Ichimatsu screeched loudly as Akari prepared to pull the trigger. He was frozen in complete fear.

Akari pulled the trigger, hitting Ichimatsu directly in the heart.

Gagging loudly, Ichimatsu fell over limply as a world of pain surrounded his entire body...
