Chapter Three
Ichimatsu sat up straight in bed, sweat dripping down his forehead. He knew that hadn't just been a nightmare. It was a bad memory.
Trembling in disgust, Ichimatsu arose, walked across the room, then quickly put his clothes on for the day. His brothers were already in the living room, laughing loudly as they ate breakfast together.
"I guess they're glad I'm not 'awake' yet," Ichimatsu thought, "It must get annoying to have me around all the time..."
Ichimatsu walked down the stairs and opened up the living room door. His brothers weren't even eating breakfast. There was food on the table, but it remained untouched as they all wrestled around on the floor.
Jyushimatsu, who was on top of all of his brothers, quickly broke away from them laughing as he let out a loud, "Good morning, Ichimatsu nii-san!"
Everyone stopped wrestling around and quickly sat at the table, watching Ichimatsu's every move like he was a time bomb that could explode at any moment.
"Good morning..." Ichimatsu mumbled, sitting down beside Karamatsu.
"Are you alright?" Choromatsu asked, his voice anxious as always.
"I'm fine..." Ichimatsu mumbled, watching his brothers begin to eat.
"You were tossing and turning all night long. It was really irritating," Osomatsu said, his mouth full of food.
"Nii-san usually looks dead when he's sleeping!" Jyushimatsu exclaimed.
"Are you sure you're okay, my brother?" Karamatsu asked, turning to look at his brother beside him.
"I just had a nightmare, that's all," Ichimatsu replied. "But it was also a memory, you know? That monster brought something to me in my mind last night. I want to move on so badly. I almost wish I could just go back to the past and erase all of those bad memories..." he added to himself.
After several minutes of listening to his brothers speak of nonsense, Ichimatsu walked out of the room with Kibo, climbing the stairs to the roof.
Jyushimatsu quickly followed him. After all, someone always had to watch him.
Burying his head in the cat's soft, fluffy fur, Ichimatsu sighed.
He knew it would be impossible to go back to the past to change things, yet he longed for his days of youth to return to him one final time. After all, if it was possible to come back to life, how hard could it be to go back in time before it even happened? Ten years back in time, that is.
"Nii-san?" Jyushimatsu asked quietly, sitting down beside Ichimatsu on the slanted roof as tiny snow flakes fell from the sky.
At that moment, Ichimatsu sucked in his breath, trying to keep back an exasperated sigh.
"What's bothering you? What exactly was your dream, Ichimatsu?" Jyushimatsu asked innocently.
"It was nothing..." Ichimatsu mumbled. "You wouldn't understand even if I told you in great detail..."
"But I understood the monsters, didn't I?" Jyushimatsu asked, his mouth in an open smile as he swayed back and fourth, his eyes sparkling as he watched the snow.
"Can I ask you a really stupid question then?" Ichimatsu sighed, lifting his head to watch the snow as Kibo began to fall asleep in his arms, his body going completely limp and heavy.
"None of your questions have ever been stupid, nii-san!" Jyushimatsu laughed. "Ask me!"
"Do you ever wish you could go back in time? You know, maybe ten years...just enough time to keep yourself from something that only ended up hurting you and everyone else in the end..." Ichimatsu muttered.
"Of course I do," Jyushimatsu replied, his voice dead serious for once. "I would want to fix so many things that happened. I could stop things from happening too, couldn't I, nii-san? Maybe even stop death?"
"He still misses Homura..." Ichimatsu thought, sadly looking at his brother. "It's comforting to know I'm not the only suffering creature here. Then again, how come Jyushimatsu pretends to be fine? He never got over her death. I know he didn't..."
"Yeah...stop death..." Ichimatsu mumbled as bitter memories of Harvey, Kanola, and the Cat Cafe flashed through his mind. At that moment, Ichimatsu felt as if the devil himself had reached into his heart, squeezing it until he couldn't take the pain anymore.
"We should go see Dekapan! He might know what we could do!" Jyushimatsu exclaimed, his voice no longer serious.
"But...it's impossible to go back in time..." Ichimatsu muttered.
"It's impossible to die and come back to life," Jyushimatsu replied, standing up as he ran down the stairs, going back inside.
