IDEA
I had to walk home from helping out at a STEM Camp today and while I was walking I got a really good(?) idea for a book.
So it basically follows this future world a couple hundred years into the future; technology is the number one focus and has developed so drastically.
The government of this world is fairly strict and has a lot of rules, but is mostly well liked by the people.
As always, there's a rebel group who wants to overtake this government. Their ideals are more drastic than the current government, though, on the opposite side of the spectrum. In order to carry out their work, they use two types of people.
Hunters: These people are the main agents that carry out their work. They go in, do the crimes and whatever work needs to be done, no matter how dirty. Each Hunter varies in how they perform their job, some more noticeable than others. The number one rule of Hunters is to never be caught. If caught, they're taken prisoner, and most prisoners are never heard from again. Hunters are allowed to be seen, and actually encouraged to be seen. This allows the next people to take over, the Switchers.
Switchers: These people are those who failed to become Hunters, but are still useful enough in one way. When a Hunter's name and identity is found, using the advanced technology of the world, a Hunter switches their entire identity with a Switcher. A Switcher then continues the work of that Hunter until they are caught. Once they're caught, they take the punishment of the Hunter, which varies. Some Switchers are lucky, and only have to suffer the rest of their lives in prison. Others take on jobs in the government. Most are executed.
With Switchers, a person can be killed, and the government believes that a threat is gone, when in reality, they aren't. The new identity that a Hunter takes on then goes on to commit more crimes, and take on more identities. The average Hunter lives four lives: One their own and three of another person.
I have three main characters that are thought of for now. No names or genders yet, except for the third.
First is the Switcher. They take the role of a Hunter and are sent to their death. At their heart, they believe that although there could definitely be improvements made to the government, a rebellion is unnecessary, and the group is taking needless lives for a radical goal. Before their death, their executor interrogates them, and discovers the true identity of this person, and saves their life. Their birth identity is the child of a strong technological genius. Their Switcher identity is that of a musical child..
Second is the Executor. This person used to be a Switcher, and was punished for "their" crime and now has to execute anyone who comes in, many of whom are Switchers. This Executor feels extreme guilt for their job, and when meets the Switcher, is able to save them. They, like the Switcher, agree with the government and want to end the rebel group. Their birth identity is a boy from the streets, and their Switcher identity is a well known executor raised from a rebel.
Third is the Hunter. This is the Hunter who took on the identity of the Switcher. She is an ace Hunter, child prodigy, and have taken on at least ten different identities throughout their life, switching to be many different kinds of people. Despite her being told to completely forget each past identity, and having admitted to the leaders that they have taken on the past of another, this Hunter remembers each and every identity she's taken, and lets each identity live with them. Her birth identity and name are dear to her, and currently has the identity of the Switcher.
One of the major things I see holding me back is how to depict the identity switches. As the rebel group does not care for the personal wishes of their Hunters and Switchers, Hunters and Switchers often switch many things, height, age, and gender being some of them. Some Hunters and Switchers are okay with these switches, while others are not. The gender switches are the most apparent, as the Hunter has switched gender many times. This, I know, is a touchy subject and may be hard to present this properly.
Either way, this seems like a fun project! I like the idea of where it is now, barring difficulties. If you can help me figure out any of these problems or have recommendations for me, feel free to let me know!
