William leaned up against his car, his phone buzzing as it sat against his ear. It rang out, making him suck his teeth as an irritated look clung to his face. He dialed the number once more, growing annoyed that it wasn't picking up.
"Trina," he blew into the phone when he finally heard a voice connect. He heard shuffling before she responded.
"What?" She blew back as she continued to adjust her surroundings and causing Will to squint his eyes, trying to hear what it was she was doing.
"Are you sleeping?" he asked shocked, widening his eyes. "I've been outside knocking and ringing the doorbell for like 20 minutes, man. Let's go. I don't have all day," he said and she finally laid still before sucking her teeth.
"What are you doing outside my house?" she spoke into the phone and he only grew more irritated.
"What you mean? I'm here to get my son. Open the door," he said lifting himself from the car and walking back to the front door.
"You gonna have to wait,"
"Clearly because you still in bed. Just open the door and I'll help you get him ready," he said as he continued to twist the knob, knowing good and well it was still locked.
"I'll bring him to you,"she said as she rolled out of the bed.
"Why would you do that? I'm already here. Just stop playing and open the door," he said and she hummed into the phone and repeated her words.
"Imma get him ready and have him there in like an hour. What you rushing for?" She asked and he huffed, rubbing his hand over his face and giving his back to the door. He squinted his eyes, realizing that her car wasn't anywhere near the house.
"Trina, where you at?" he asked and she went silent. "I know you hear me asking you a question," he said and she sucked her teeth once more.
"I don't gotta answer shit. You're not my man," she said into the phone as she picked up her smiling baby and packed him into her arms. Junior was such a morning baby. He had the most energy and the biggest smile when he woke up.
"This isn't a game. I don't have to be your man to know where you have my son. I'm not saying you can't take him anywhere but we talked about this. Any person he would be spending the night with would have to be agreed on by both of us," he said, trying to remain calm so she didn't think he was being a bitter baby daddy.
In all actuality, he didn't care who Trina dated, as long as she didn't continue to bother him. He just wanted to be there for his son and co-parent in the best way possible. He also didn't like the idea of his small son being in the home of someone who was a complete stranger to him. That's where he drew the line.
"Mane, with that preaching. My baby is good and you know Imma always make sure of that," she blew into the phone and she gave her baby his morning bottle. Trina was a good mother. She sometimes did things to spite William, which would probably only hurt Junior in the long run but her baby was everything to her. She didn't see the problem, especially when he was with her.
"I'm not trying to come at you as a mother. But as a co-parent, when we agree on something, none of us should overstep what was discussed," he said calmly. Will never let people get him out of his character. Every once in a while, Trina got him to break but he kept his composure, most of the time.
"Alright...alright, Imma have him to you in an hour. Let me get him ready," she said before she hung up the phone. He shook his head and headed to his car. He tried his hardest not to call back and curse her out because she knew exactly what she was doing.
He kept his cool...for his son. He didn't want the way he reacted from his mother's attitude to keep him away from him.
He headed home and waited for Trina to drop baby Junior off to him. He freshened his place up and got all his sons toys and favorite snacks ready for him. He had cleaned his room the day before even though he knew he would just mess it all up again.
The bell chimed, making Will look at his watch to see that more than an hour had passed. He jumped from the sofa, rubbing his hands together as he proceeded to the door.
He opened the door as was met by a faint smile. "What's up, Le. Hey, baby girl. What y'all doing here?" he smiled as he allowed the girls to step in.
"Since you're always bringing me food, I thought I'd return the favor," Leah smiled as she waited for William to close the door behind them. He peeked out and looked around as Leah stood behind him and squinted her eyes.
"What are you doing?" she chuckled. "Who are you looking for?" she asked and he drew himself back in and closed the door.
"Trina was supposed to be here a minute ago to drop Junior off," he said as he tussled Kacey's hair while she kept her eyes focused in her iPad.
"Oh...today's your day with Junior. I completely forgot," she said looking around. "I'll just drop this off and head out then," she said and he chuckled watching her slightly frantic.
"That doesn't mean you have to leave. I just wasn't expecting it to be you guys at the door. It was a nice surprise though," he stated and Leah blushed a little before Kacey cleared her throat, causing them both to look down at her.
"I'm not a guy," she stated glaring up at them. They looked at each other and then back at her, laughing.
"I know you're not a guy. I just- I," he spoke rubbing his head, not quite knowing how to explain his statement while Leah watched him with her eyebrows arched. "I just wasn't expecting it to be you ladies at the door," he smiled down at her making her giggle. Kacey was too smart for her own good.
"Alright, Ms.Smartmouth," Leah chuckled shaking her head.
"Don't just stand here. You gu-ladies can go ahead and make yourselves comfortable. Kacey you can watch whatever you want," he smiled leading them into the kitchen. "Here's the remote," he said as he handed it to Kacey, replacing it from her iPad.
The bell chimed once more before William turned the TV on for Kacey and headed towards the door. He turned the knob and was met with his smiley, chunky baby boy.
"There's my baby," he cooed as Junior giggled at his fathers smile. Junior was a Carbon copy of his father. No one in the world could deny that he was Williams son. "Daddy missed you, big man," he said holding Junior in the air as slobber escaped his small plump lips.
As William adjusted Junior in his arms and wiped the drool from his shirt, Trina stood by the door with her arms folded across her chest.
"So how you complaining about me when you got her in here. Oh...and the baby in here too? Well, I'll be damned," she said letting her arms fall to her side.
"These are two completely different things. You had him sleeping over a persons house and I don't know them. You've met Leah and Kacey on multiple occasions. You've spent time with them. Lastly, they're in my home. In the middle of the day. So don't start your shit," he said a little above a whisper so that only she heard. He hates arguing in front of his son and never wanted him to see his parents mad at each other, even though that was most of the time.
"That's why you don't want me around when you have him. You said it was good that we all
spent time together as a family so that he could grow up seeing his parents together from time to time. Now I see that was all talk," she said folding her arms over her chest once more.
"It's always something with you, I swear," he scoffed shaking his head. "Sunday's we take him to church, the park and dinner. The both of us. Every Sunday. Something I planned and you agreed upon," he mentioned with his eyebrows furrowed as Junior laid his sleepy head on her fathers shoulder.
"So your son only has a family one day out of the week?" She asked as she twisted her neck at him.
"Trina, just hand me the diaper bag and leave please. I'm not talking about this right now. Not in front of my company and especially not in front of my baby. So leave," he stated and she rolled her eyes and made her way down the stairs. He closed the door behind her and sighed down at his son who stared up at him.
"I know, son. My fault...I didn't mean to set you up. I should've known better," he teased shaking his head. Leah walked out of the kitchen chuckling.
"Don't be talking to that boy about his Mama," she said smiling a little as she walked over to them.
"She steady tweaking man. I really can't be bothered sometimes," he said rubbing his waves and Leah reached for Junior, shaking her head. "Can't even have my son for 5 minutes and you're already hogging him," he mugged and she rolled her eyes as she packed Junior into her arms.
"Hey, chunky butt," she cooed as Junior giggled watching Leah purse her lips down at him. "You're so freaking cuteeeee. I can't take it," she said lightly squeezing his cheeks.
"Do you realize that your accent thickens when you're excited?" he teased and she mugged him, rolling her eyes.
"Do you realize that no one asked," she said squinting her eyes at him and making him laugh. Leah tried her hardest to speak as Americanized as she could but that British accent always shined through.
The twos eyes softened as Junior let out a soft yawn and chapped his lips, he fingers automatically going into his mouth and he laid his head on Leah's chest.
"Someone is sleepy,"Leah cooed, rubbing on Juniors back as he sucked on his index and middle finger and slowly fluttered his round eyes.
"I've been trying to break him out of that habit. His auntie wore braces for 3 years after doing that mess," he mugged shaking his head and Leah pushed his chest laughing. "What? He's gonna end up buck toothed," he laughed.
"How come you didn't wear braces then," Leah teased as she bounced the baby softly.
"See...don't even play with me. People pay for teeth like these," he smiled and Leah rolled her eyes. She knew it was the truth and was just trying to get a kick out of him.
"Damn, I guess there's anesthesia in the air because both of these kids are knocked," he laughed pointing at Kacey who had fallen asleep on the sofa with her hand gripped tightly on the remote.
They took both kids upstairs and let them take their naps. They hadn't even touched the food that Leah brought over before the kids had passed out. After they got them settled, they headed back to the kitchen and ate.
Leah updated William on Ms.Donna and what the detectives and CPS workers were discussing over the guardianship of Kacey. They also discussed things regarding William.
Leah couldn't help but think they were always talking about her and what she was dealing with. She rarely stopped and asked what he was dealing with. She tried her best not to burden him with her problems but it was always the main topic or most of their conversations.
She wanted it to be different, so she made sure to ask him about his life. Especially when she just heard the conversation between him and Trina.
"That's the only restaurant that comes close to my mother's cooking," Leah smiled and she walked up of the half bathroom and into the living room where William sat searching for a movie.
"I can't wait until I meet her so I can get some," he said smiling at her as she sat beside him. She sat a few inches away, curling one foot beneath her butt while the other hung. She pressed her lips together trying to rub in her chapstick while her deep brown eyes focused on the TV screen. Will was mesmerized. He couldn't understand how beautiful she was.
"What do you want to watch?" She asked, snapping Will out of the trans she had put him in. Of course she had realized, as she did every other time, and playfully rolled her eyes and took the remote from his hands.
She scrolled through Netflix and picked The Old Guard, moving her other leg onto the sofa and laying back on the arm William had over the length over the head of the sofa.
They got comfortable and focused on the movie. A soft yawned escaped Leah as she subconsciously moved closer and closer to William as the time passed. She smiled softly feeling Williams eyes on her now that she was almost completely against his chest.
"What?" She giggled looking up at him.
"You know what you're doing being this close to me," he whispered searching her eyes.
"What?" She asked genuinely confused as she held her bottom lip between her teeth and looked up at him.
The gaze into each others eyes deepened as they slowly moved closer. Their lips parted in unison as-
"Will..." Leah said softly, holding her hand against his chest and lowering her head. He let out a soft sigh.
"I'm sorry," he said holding his head down as well so that his forehead met hers.
"You have don't have to apologize. I just..." she started but fell silent, not knowing how to tell him that she had feelings for him but her mind couldn't let this be any more than a friendship.
"I know," he responded knowing exactly what she was about to say. He understood why she was hesitant and respected her decision but it was like his mind left him when he was around her. "I love you," he said with his forehead still against hers.
"I love you too. You know I do," she said before pulling away and laying against his chest as the room fell silent.
