Spiraling
Leah waited in the precinct lobby with Kacey sound asleep against her chest. William had taken an Uber back to his place to pick his car up and was heading back.
"Ms. Allen," the same female officer spoke, trying to get Leah's attention. She sat in the chair, slightly slouched with her leg bouncing uncontrollably. She kept her focus on the wall before her, her mind racing. "Leah," she said, causing her to look up at her.
She couldn't help bring herself to imagine the way Jonah got when he was drunk. The way it scared her and how traumatic it could've been for Kacey to experience his wrath at such a small and fragile age.
"Yes," she replied, straightening up in her seat and wiping the tears from her face. She glanced at the look on the officers face and held Kacey tighter, anticipating her next words.
"Don't worry," the officer reassured her, seeing that she was growing uneasy. "The paperwork went through and you'll be able to take her home tonight," she smiled and Leah let out a deep sigh.
"And what about him?" she asked referring to Jonah.
"The only thing we can charge him with is child endangerment. Since he didn't put his hands on her, we can't charge him for anything more," the officer stated, watching Kacey so calm in Leah's arms.
"Okay," Leah replied. She was too tired to argue. She already knew the outcome and having Kacey be able to come home with her was more than she expected. She knew that because of his status in the world, he'd always get off easy.
"He was drunk with something on the stove. I wrote up the report and made sure to include all details," she said flipping the page of the report. "He yelled at her and threw an empty beer bottle at the wall behind her, causing her to hide until he fell asleep. Once he was asleep, she got dressed and left," she recited the words off of the paper and Leah took a deep breath, hearing what happened for the second time.
"I just want to make sure I include everything," the officer said and she nodded. "I'm sorry this had to happen but I hope everything works out for you and your daughter, ma'am," she smiled small and Leah returned a smaller smile and a nod.
"Thank you for everything," she replied getting up from her seat and wrapping Kacey in the blanket.
Throughout the whole situation over the past couple of months, no one seemed to be on her side in terms of people who held authoritative positions. They treated her like just another case and made her feel small. The disgust and annoyance in their eyes made her feel that they blamed her. She was grateful that this officer was different.
"Le, you ready," William approached them and asked and she smiled small and nodded. "You want me to take her?" he asked seeing that Leah still had her heels on and Kacey wasn't as light as she looked.
"I got her," she said softly. She nodded at the officer before Will placed his hand on her back and led her to the car. Leah sat in the back with Kacey, while Will drove them home.
She was still a bit irritated but also relieved that Kacey was able to finally be with her. It wasn't under the circumstances she wanted because Kacey was scared but at least she was with her.
She needed to get her home and in bed. In the morning, she planned to take her to see her grandmother.
"Is she sleeping?" Will asked as Leah walked out of the hallway and into the kitchen where William sat around the island.
"Yeah, she didn't want me to leave her," she said softly. Will watched as Leah looked everywhere but at him. He could tell that her mind still wasn't at peace and her eyes always told her truth. She avoided making eye contact because William had a tendency of always seeing right through her.
"You okay?" Will asked and she shook her head, biting the inside of her cheek and focusing on the ground.
"Come here," Will said turning his chair around facing Leah with his arms held out. She moved over to him slowly, standing in between his legs before he held her waist and pulled her closer. She rested her head on his shoulder as he held her.
"I was so scared," she admitted as he made circles in her back. "What if something happened to her? I should've tried harder to get her before. It shouldn't have come to this," she sniffled. Will drew back and held her face in his hands, looking into her eyes.
"What I won't let you do is sit here and blame yourself. Do you know how much you've done for her? How much you mean to that little girl? You've always been there for her and she loves you," he stated and she looked away. He turned her face back towards his. "Leah, seriously. This is not your fault," he repeated and she nodded.
William found himself worrying about Leah more than anything. Of course not more than his son but when he saw her in a bad place, his feelings couldn't help but mimic hers. He loves her, a lot. It's hard for him not to cater to her when she needs someone.
"You need to get to bed too," he said, softly lifting her away from him and standing before her.
"Okay, I am," she smiled small. "Are you going now?" She asked him and he scrunched his face up.
"Going where? Absolutely not. I'm not leaving y'all," he said and she sniffled once more and nodded.
She knew the answer to the question before she even asked and it was an answer she wanted to hear. The police had Jonah in custody but she was still shaken up. Not only from her baby being missing, but from being in his presence.
Whenever she was around him, memories flowed disorderly. She would imagine signs she should've noticed before and beat herself up about it, making the pain and heartache cultivate.
"Okay, I'm going to get you some towels and stuff so you can shower," she smiled.
"You get yourself situated first. I know where they are," he said and she squinted her eyes at him.
"What? Stalker..."
"I unpacked them when you moved," he chuckled and she chuckled back. "Get outta here," he said lightly shoving her in the direction of her bedroom.
Leah's condo had two bedrooms, a bathroom in each and a half bathroom. It was hard to find places to rent in LA in such little time. Plus, she needed a place where she wouldn't be bombarded with paparazzi.
She showered and did her night routine, feeling her nerves ease a bit from being settled in her home. She exited the bathroom to see William sitting on her ottoman.
"I'm gonna go lay with babygirl and you can shower and stay in here," she smiled at him and he nodded his head, standing before her and towering over her. Leah wore s lot of heels, especially when she was working which gave her a height difference. She always forgot about the drastic height gap between the two.
"Okay, sleep tight, alright?" He smiled and she hummed in response.
"You too," she said softly and he moved over to her, kissing her temple, sending a shiver through her spine. She tried her hardest to ignore the urges she had when she was around William and she noticed him doing the same.
They had agreed to remain friends because she wasn't quite ready for a relationship. Everything was too raw. It wasn't even over yet and her mind wasn't in the right place. She needed to be alone and gather herself before she could give herself to anyone else.
She was just grateful for his presence. Grateful that he knew exactly what to say to her or when she just needed someone to hold her. He respected her wishes and even though she noticed his long stares and warm forehead kisses, he never made any passes at her.
"I'll be right here all night. I'm not going anywhere so if you need me, let me know," he spoke truthfully and she nodded her head looking up at him.
"I know," she smiled before she slowly pulled away and exited the room. William headed for his shower, his nerves also calming after the hectic night. He then took the sweats Leah had laid out for him. They were his. She had borrowed some sweats from him before, being that he always encouraged her to stay over when she was feeling lonely.
Kacey slept soundly, engulfed in Leah's arm. William and Leah didn't sleep so well, both jumping at any sudden noise. Most of the noise William heard was from nature outside and most of the noise Leah heard was from William peeking into the room ever so often.

"Bug, when we go in you have to be gentle with Gramny okay?" Leah said softly, watching Kacey through the rear view mirror. She looked out the window with curiosity in her eyes and nodded her head. "I need you to answer me with your words, baby," she smiled back at her, earning a gaze from the small hazel eyes.
"I will be gentle," she spoke softly and Leah's smiled widened. Leah had just finished her early morning scenes which she was able to bring Kacey to. She was locked in a cellar for the entire episode and only had lines to recite.
They were parked outside of they hospital, ready to see Donna and you could tell Kacey was anxious.
Leah pulled her phone from her back pocket as she heard it chime, subconsciously smiling as she read the caller ID.
I just got to set but I'll see you later. I'll bring dinner if you want. Okay....bye punk.
Dinner would be nice. I'll let you know when I leave the hospital.
Alright, bet.
Will...
Leah...
Thank you❤️
Yeah yeah yeah...I'm the best. What can I say? 😎
She let out a soft chuckle at the message and slipped her into the purse she had just grabbed off of the passenger seat. She got Kacey out of the car and entered the hospital. She headed straight for Donna's room, knowing exactly where it was.
"Grammy!" Kacey squealed as she entered the room. She ran up to the bed but halted her movements, looking up and Leah and remembering her words.
"Hi, my baby," Donna smiled weakly, holding onto Kacey's small hand. Leah smiled at her and allowed Kacey to get all of her rants out to her grandmother.
"Ms. Allen," the doctor whispered through the creaked door, grabbing Leah's attention. She hummed in response and the doctor motioned for Leah to join her outside.
She slipped through door, wiping her sweaty palms in her hands. The doctors face alone caused worry to consume her. "Hi, Dr.Daniels," she said nervously.
"Hello, dear," she said softly. "I called you out here because I have some updates on Donna's health,"
"Okay," Leah responded softly.
"Well, she has stage four cancer. Unfortunately, we found out at a late stage. We're doing everything we can but her health is dwindling," she said making Leah's hand clasp over her mouth.
"I knew it," she mumbled to herself.
"What's important is that you plan your next steps. At this point, anything can happen," she said and Leah felt her eyes begin to well up.
Everything was happening all too fast. She felt that she couldn't catch a break. Not only her, but Kacey. It was happening to them both and she felt like she was spiraling.
