Chapter 34
(34) Time....what exactly is time? Most people take it for granted, waste it. But when it is suddenly taken away from you, and I mean the entire concept of it. It is like you have lost a piece of your soul.
Prisoners scratch tallies of days onto wall, children close their eyes and count to one hundred, agonizingly fretting if their prey will have time to successfully hide if they count too slowly. How Maurice now envies those children.
With no day, no night, time was immeasurable, trapped inside his crystalline prison. In the beginning of his confinement he threw his thoughts into the conundrums of being inside. How does the crystal sustain him? No water, no food, no oxygen, maybe he was already dead, trapped forever like a dragonfly in amber. He asked Zeesha.
"Beats me monkey man", she responded with a distant vacant expression. Maurice found it odd that she only started speaking with him again recently. "Mo, you need a shave, you look horrible!"
He glanced at is reflection, it was like gazing back in time, to another life. He worked so hard to become human, committed many unforgivable acts. Now here we was back where he started, a hairy wild beast.
Dragonflies, made him think of Anisopher. He began to cry suddenly, he shouted out loud. "Why did you follow me North? Why did you both sacrifice so much? Jean wasn't worth it!!"
"You're not worth it silly monkey, if I help you with this I will get into trouble." The response came from a girl, how beautiful the twins were when they first appeared in the Laboratory. Encountering them sparked his determination to become human. Sent him northwards in search of the serum, based solely on rumours and old fairy tales. Oh how clever I was to trick that big dummy.
"Not very clever Monkey Man, you stole the wrong serum, remember?", chided the disembodied head. "If you are so clever, how did you get trapped in there genius?"
"SHUT UP! SHUT UP ZEESHA I AM TRYING TO THINK!!!"
Frustrated he slapped the glass-like surface with his hairy palm and screeched. That is when the first vision came to him.
