Chapter 30
JARED'S POV
It had been three days since Amelia had visited us in the phone store. I had been a nervous wreck, and I could tell that Anna felt the same.
I felt like I was stepping on egg shells around her though, ironic since I couldn't actually step.
I didn't want to say anything that would freak my mate out. Amelia was after us and the pressure had finally caused Anna to crack, but I didn't blame her.
Dylan had been keeping me updated, letting me know that they hadn't picked up Amelia's scent since that day, so it appeared that she hadn't returned. I was still wary though. Amelia enjoyed putting on a show and teasing people. I knew that she would return, and strike just as hard, if not harder.
Anna was currently in her room, where she had been spending a lot of her time. It seemed as if she wanted to put distance between us, afraid that Amelia would strike again if she saw us together. I knew that she had to do what she had to do though. If having time to herself meant that she would feel more comfortable, then I accepted it.
My phone started to buzz, and I picked it up from the coffee table, holding it to my ear. "Dylan, hey."
"Jared, I've got a letter from Amelia here that you need to see. It arrived a few minutes ago." Dylan's voice sounded strained, and I sighed, pinching the bridge of my nose.
"I'll be there soon," I told him. "Shall I bring Anna?"
Dylan didn't answer for a few seconds, but he eventually released a loud exhale. "You might want to read through it first. You'll be the best person to break the news to her."
Break the news to her?
My blood ran cold, and a thousand scenarios ran through my head. "What do you mean?"
"Just get over here as soon as you can."
Dylan quickly ended the call, and I pulled the phone away to stare at it, my brows furrowed. What was so bad that Dylan didn't want Anna to hear?
Wheeling myself down the hall, I knocked on Anna's door, hearing her shuffle behind it. After a couple of seconds, she pulled it open, smiling at me shyly.
"Are you okay?" she asked, knitting her brows together and taking in my perplexed expression. I tried my best to hide it though. I didn't want her to know that something was wrong.
"Yeah," I said, clearing my throat. "I'm just letting you know that I'm heading out to go and see Dylan. He wants to discuss a few things with me."
Anna sighed, running her hand through her hair and fiddling with her nose ring, something I had noticed that she did when she was anxious. "Will I be here by myself?"
I shook my head, pulling my phone out of my pocket. "Nope, I'm texting Gia to come over. You'll have wolves watching you too, remember? So you'll be safe."
"Will you be safe?" Anna questioned me, her mouth parting slightly as she cocked her head at me, looking concerned.
Releasing a small chuckle, I nodded. "Don't worry about me. The pack isn't far."
"Okay," muttered Anna, nodding once. She looked me up and down quickly, biting at the inside of her cheek as she stood before me awkwardly. I knew that she didn't know what to say.
"Gia has just left, so she'll be here in a bit," I told her, taking a look at my screen.
"Be safe please."
Nodding, I smiled at my mate, beginning to wheel myself out of the house, watching as Anna gazed at me for a few seconds. She looked guilty, and I knew it was because of how she had acted a few days ago. I didn't want her to feel bad about being honest though.
Once Amelia was gone, it was going to be a hell of a lot easier for us. Right now, emotions were running high.
I waited out the front until Gia arrived, her face solemn, a frown appearing. I gathered that she had read the letter, and I was hoping that she wasn't going to say anything about it to Anna until I knew what it was about.
"Don't be long," Gia told me, widening her eyes in warning. "I don't know how long I can lie to her for."
Nodding, I began the journey to the pack, wheeling myself down the path and through the trees. I heard paws hitting the ground heavily around me, and I knew that the wolves were watching me carefully, ensuring that I was protected.
I hated how they had to watch me though- all because I couldn't protect myself in human or wolf form. It made me feel weak and I hated it.
Pushing the thought away, I wound my way through the trees, spotting the guards positioned by the gates. I nodded at them, entering, breathing in the fresh forest air as I pushed myself faster along the grass.
Dylan's house quickly came into view, and I pushed the door open once I reached it, spotting Dylan sitting on the couch with Clara right next to him. Sonny was on her lap, and he immediately beamed at me with his usual goofy smile as he looked over, releasing a small bubbly laugh.
"I'm here," I breathed, noticing how Clara's face turned a pale white.
"Read this," Dylan instructed me as he passed me over a crumpled up letter, my eyes narrowing as I scanned over the page.
Jared,
I warned you.
I told you that someone was going to get hurt, and to start, it's going to be your human bitch's mother. She wasn't hard to find. She was working in a small family owned cafe half way across the country.
Do as I say, or I'm going to break her neck and film it for your human. Seeing her own Mother beg for her life is sure to mess her up.
It's up to you. If you want her to live, remove Anna from you life. I won't stop at her Mother. I'm sure she has lots of family members who I could target. It won't be hard to find them.
See you soon,
Amelia.
I growled lowly as I finished reading, my fists clenched as I dropped the letter to the ground. "That bitch."
Clara shook her head, running her hand down her face. "We don't know what to do, Jared. We don't know where she's located."
"Well we have to find her before she does something to Anna's Mother," I told them, grinding my teeth together.
"Is there any chance that Amelia is lying though?" Questioned Dylan, and I shrugged, trying to control my breathing.
"I don't know, but I don't want to risk it." My heart felt as if it was about to explode out of my chest, and nausea wavered through me.
"Jared," Clara spoke softly, plopping Sonny onto Dylan's lap, making her way over to me and cupping my cheeks. "We are going to do whatever we can to stop Amelia from hurting anyone. We won't let her do this to you."
ANNA'S POV
"Did you want to order some food?" asked Gia as she raised her brow at me, cocking her head.
I shrugged in response, hugging my knees to my chest as I remained focused on the TV in front of us. The show was boring, but it was a good distraction. Jared going out was worrying me. I was frightened that Amelia would strike, but I knew that the wolves were out there watching. They would be able to help if anything did happen.
I picked up my phone, checking it for the seventh time in the past ten minutes. I just wanted a confirmation that he was okay, but I understood that I hadn't asked him to let me know.
"Is that a new phone?" Gia asked me, scooting closer to me to have a look. "It's a good one."
"Jared refused to leave me without one," I told her, my voice somewhat monotone.
"Anna," Gia muttered. "Are you sure you're okay?"
I clicked my tongue, shaking my head. "I mean, no, not really. That's expected though when your mate's crazy ex is threatening to kill everyone if you stay together."
"How are you two handling that?"
I shrugged again, noticing how Gia gazed at me sadly. "I told him that I can't do it- not with Amelia out there. It's going to get people killed."
"What? So you're just over?" Gia asked, shock masking her face.
"I don't know be honest. All I know is we need to wait until this is all over before continuing."
Gia didn't respond, and she released a sigh, looking angry. "I swear I'm going to rip Amelia's throat out myself."
I hummed in response, my head turning towards the door once I heard a knock. Pushing myself up off the couch, I sighed, dropping my phone next to me. "Jared probably forgot his keys. I'll get it."
Walking out of the living room, I strolled up to the front door, pulling it open. My mouth was already half- open, ready to question my mate on what his chat with his Alpha involved, but, my eyes went wide as I stared at the man in front of me.
All of the blood left my face as I tensed, my heart suddenly beating a mile and minute and my palms clamming up.
"Hello, Anna," he jeered, cocking his head as he scratched at his beard, a smile making its way onto his face.
I gulped, my eyes welling up with tears as fear wracked my body. "Dad?"
