Chapter Twenty Three
Author's POV
The sun shone directly on the lake at the far end of a vast grassy field. A house stood majestically in the middle of the vast land. It wasn't too big or too small. It had a large barn at its left and on its right, another small shelter containing white comfy chairs and a table with short canopies above it forming a roof.
Two people battled each other near the lake with thin, long but firm logs. The female wore a blue oversized strapped vest. with spaces under her arms revealing a black tube top inside with black dungarees and trainers. A black material was twisted around each arm down to her wrists with her blonde hair held up in a messy ponytail.
The male wore a black sleeved shirt and blue jeans with trainers. His blonde hair was also held up with a black rubber band.
Each one tried to counter the others attack with their logs as they parried and thrust.
"You're getting weak, Old Man! " Elles said with a mocking laugh as she balanced her left leg on the grassy area.
"Haha, I'm just giving you a chance, that's all." Thor replied swinging his log.
He struck his log towards her as she blocked the hit then landed a fierce kick on his abdomen making him jerk backwards.
"Told you you're getting slow. You're lucky this is a no-powers training." She said throwing the log on the ground trying to catch her breath. Even if she didn't admit it out loud, Thor was a hundred times stronger and faster than she was. He was probably letting her hold her own.
"You're giving up just yet? " Thor asked placing a hand on his hip.
"No, i'm just uh, resolving to using fists instead." Elles replied then immediately realized the nonsense she just said. Fists? He's gonna break yours with less effort. A voice said in her head making her regret what she had suggested but it was too late because Thor had already thrown his log away with both fists in front of him.
"Can I just get another second? I gotta enjoy my last day on earth." She said making Thor break into a laugh.
She took her chance. Charging forward, she punched him in the chest but he barely staggered. He took one of her arm and one of her leg then lifted her above his head as she screamed. He twirled around making her scream and laugh at the same time. Soon, they both lost balance and fell head on into the lake.
"Well, the training took a surprising turn." Steve commented from behind them. They splattered in the water, laughing at each other.
Steve and Nat stood a few inches away from the lake smiling at them as Elles chased Thor around throwing tiny bits of stone at him as he struggled to run faster in the abdomen length lake.
It had been seven months since Elles was fully recovered from the "compromise". Sometimes, it made her lose her memory totally. But ever since she had been staying at the country side in London, things had turned out for the better.
The Avengers often came in threes or fours to visit her. A month ago, it had been Peter, Bruce, Thor and Tony, the first two months were Vision, Clint and Wanda(who was probably talked into coming). Even Fury had paid her a visit once accompanied by Maria Hill. Jane had found the place for her. It was quiet and very comforting. A place worthy for a rehab.
The game had changed for the aliens. They had gone totally into hiding or so they thought. But everyone knew they wouldn't just disappear into thin air. A new army was rising slowly. S.H.I.E.L.D had lost a lot of soldiers in a space of three months.
Fury said they were "converting" men into their so-called army. They worked tirelessly creating their own army.
Meanwhile, the Avengers took their time to get along and trust each other except Wanda who still thought Ellesmere was an enemy. Over the past months, they'd come to trust Elles and accept her fully as one of them.
"I think you both have had enough playing for one day." Nat said bending down to pick up a leaf.
"She's getting quite accustomed to wielding a log." Thor said gently pulling Elles up on her feet. They were soaking wet but still looked happy and had become closer with time.
"The last time we had training... " Steve started with a hint of pride in his tone but was interrupted by Ellesmere's ringing and contagious laughter.
"I won that fight, Steve." She said and Steve threw his hands up in surrender as they all made their way back into the house with Thor's hand interlocked in hers.
For Thor, everything was a blur. At first, he had seen Ellesmere as an enemy, then a harmless girl and now, he felt like she was a part of him he never knew existed. The bond between them had grown stronger than ever.
He usually stayed behind longer than any other person during each visit. Usually, everyone left after three days but he'd stay a whole week. The last time, Tony had to pull him by the ear, literally.
He did everything with her much to his surprise. They trained together, had bike rides, swam, watched movies , played games, visited the town, talked about random stuff. Sometimes, it was odd seeing them together. But the Avengers never read between the lines.
"Any news from Jane concerning the Orb?" Steve asked pinching his hot pancake as they gathered around the dining table. Thor and Elles had gone upstairs to change their wet clothes leaving only Nat and Steve.
"The last time she called, she told me it was safe in Queens. No one knows exactly where it is except herself and Fury. I suggest it stays hidden." She said ruffling the back of her red hair.
"I still don't understand how Tigrahn was able to channel it's power to Elles and create that electromagnetic radiation and the barrier."
"She doesn't have any idea about it. Seems her memory was wiped clean."
"He's up to something otherwise he'd be chasing our tails by now. Any word from Fury?"
"He's still scouring the whole planet but has found nothing so far. Seems they don't want to be found but i'm sure as hell prepared to kick their asses if they show their faces again. "
The sound of laughter made the pair stop their conversation and look at the other pair coming down the stairs. They wore matching black and blue Tees.
"You know, if i didn't know you two and Elles was like a hundred years older, i'd say you two would make quite the charming couple." Steve said standing up to go sit in the blue couch.
Although, Jane found the house, Tony insisted on handling the design. Thankfully, there were less glasses and less technology than the Tower. Just a normal beautiful house in London.
Thor and Elles shared a confused look then smiled at each other.
"I'd give anything to see that smile remain on your faces." Steve said again.
"And I'd give anything to have someone tell Bruce that i don't have diabetes. " Elles said walking to sit next to Steve. He leisurely crossed his arm around her shoulder.
"Why does Bruce think you have diabetes?" Nat asked looking puzzled.
"I think it's because she always had cereal for breakfast and added a lot of sugar in it." Steve said then looked at Elles from the corner of his eye.
"But that doesn't mean you have diabetes, right?" Thor asked quite unsure of himself.
"Yeah. I did have diabetes once when i was ten. It was a very disturbing year but i pushed through." Elles said resting her head on Steve's chest. She seemed like a daughter to everyone.
"So, one would think you'd quit eating so much sugar after such illness." Thor said stuffing a pancake in his mouth.
"One would think you'd have better manners being a Prince and all. Your parents should see you gobble up that poor pancake." Elles said shaking her head disappointingly.
He snickered and stood up with the plate filled with pancakes."If you want one, you just ask"
"Pff, i made them!" Elles said stretching her hand.
"Yeah and i'm eating them so quit complaining about it." Thor replied sticking his tongue out at her.
"Oh no, you taught him that too?" Steve said slapping his forehead.
"Amongst others, yes!" Elles replied nodding.
"Including giving nicknames!" Nat said pointing at Steve.
"Exactly. Everyone picks up a habit in time. Parker knows how to pick pockets now. He's a real sticky finger." She said acknowledging her achievements.
"You're bad influence sister! Widow now sings. Interesting." Steve said earning a glare from Nat.
"I must say, i achieved a lot in six months but k still haven't showed Nick how to hula hoop."
Everyone broke into laughter then Steve's phone vibrated. He took it out of his pocket, stared at the screen for a while then put it back.
"It's Clint. He said he's onto something. They spotted seven compromised S.H.I.E.L.D soldiers in California. We have to leave. " He stood up and Nat did the same.
"Can i come?" Elles asked even though she already knew what their answer would be.
"No, it's too risky. You stay here where you'll be safe. We don't want you getting in trouble with those freaks again." Steve said.
"But i want to help. Let me come with you. I'm fully stable. I could fight on a low." She prodded.
"He's right, Elle!" Thor said taking her hand gently. She hung her head low then stared up at Thor but he shook his head. The puppy dog eyes weren't working.
"Okay fine but you better let me know how it goes." She said and Thor nodded.
In the next forty minutes, they had packed up waiting for Tony to come pick them up.
Soon, a bright red Ferrari pulled up in front of them. The driver's window slid down effortlessly revealing Tony's smirking face. He wore sunglasses. Typical
"What's shaking, Current?" He asked resting one hand on the wheel and the other on the window.
"Another month without kicking butts. Very eventful!" She said dryly with her hands in her jeans as Thor, Nat and Steve got into the car.
"Don't misbehave and take appropriate care of yourself, Kid. " Tony said rolling down the window.
"No promises." She said waving goodbye, her eyes shifted to Thor, he winked at her with a warm smile and then they were gone.
The entire world fell silent as she stood alone in the vast field watching the dust rise behind the Ferrari as it zoomed off. In that moment, she felt truly alone and sad and never noticed that someone watched her from a distance.
-So it's been a while i penned down anything, i was trying to figure out how to make this work more awesome. I can't say i've figured it out but i'm still figuring. -
I do hope that Part Two of Another Asgardian is more captivating than the first part.
Anyways, please keep voting and commenting guys, i really appreciate it when you do that.
