Virgil would have lied if he said he wasn't fully expecting Patton to slowly distance himself from him; he wasn't blind, he saw the dirty looks Roman shoot him every time he spotted the two together, he saw the twins fight and he felt the tension that was growing between the two. One time Patton even caught him freaking out because he yelled at Roman and he never yelled at anyone.
So it just made sense to the darkly dressed guy that the cheery boy would choose his brother over someone he'd known for just a few weeks, but once again Patton surprised him; he didn't care what his brother thought of him, he didn't care that everyone in the school told him that associating with Virgil would have been a bad move popularity-wise, he said he would have been his friend and he never went back on his words.
That day Patton had asked him to hang out and despite starting to get used to it, he could feel Roman glaring holes into his head as the two of them walked out of school and towards Patton's house.
They were talking and watching Steven Universe when the buzz of a notification on Virgil's phone caught his attention. He frowned in confusion, quickly taking the phone out. All the contacts he had could be counted on the fingers of one hand, two were his two jobs, which would usually call if they needed to, and the other two were Patton and his brother; Logan never called him especially right before a tutor session when he was reviewing the material he had to teach, and Pat was right by his side.
He unlocked the phone, opening the message app just to find a simple "hey" from an unknown number. He shrugged it off, thinking it was probably someone who got the wrong number, but he didn't want to leave it unanswered, knowing that the person on the other side didn't know he wasn't the person they wanted him to be.
-Who's this?
He was about to re-pocket his phone and go back to watching the cartoon they had been watching for a while when the phone buzzed again.
Just someone who wants to get to know you better.-
Virgil stared at his phone for a few seconds. He could feel his anxiety starting to bubble up inside him, his leg starting to bounce up and down as he started to slightly chew on his thumb nail.
-Ever heard of 'stranger danger'? I don't even know your name.
He jumped a bit when the answer was instantaneous.
I'm not a stranger, you've seen me around before.-
In school.-
Virgil definitely didn't like this. He didn't like talking to people, let alone someone he didn't know and who started texting him randomly.
-How did you even get my number?
-You could be a creep.
On the other side, Roman was starting to get frustrated and he was already halfway to his tutor's house, he knew he didn't have much time, but he had to convince Virgil to talk to him.
Suddenly an idea popped into his head. Who didn't love a little bit of adventure? He smirked as he started typing away on the screen, the message leaving the emo guy completely baffled.
I have my ways and im not a creep.-
Listen let's play a game-
You have two months to find out who i am, and if you haven't figured it out by then i'll tell you.-
each of us will have a question a day, as long as it is not in regards to our name, birthday or description of ourselves.-
Virgil just stared wide eyed at his phone, his hands slightly shaking. He didn't like this, not even one bit but he had to admit he was a little intrigued. After all he had always liked mysteries and riddles and he knew that if it ever got too much, he would have been able to find who it was in a matter of days with Logan's help.
He bit his lip softly, deep in thought. Then his phone buzzed once again making him jump slightly and throwing him out of his head.
So, what do you say? You in?-
"Kiddo? Who are you texting?" Patton asked, gaining Virgil's attention as he finally noticed his friend was no longer paying attention to the show.
It was only then that he finally noticed the condition the other was in. His breaths were a bit labored and his hands were shaking slightly, making the cheery guy's eyes fill with concern.
"You okay?" He asked softly as he gently put a hand on Virgil's shoulder, trying to ground him.
The darkly dressed guy stood still for a second before hesitantly shaking his head.
"I... someone texted me but I have no idea who they are and they are refusing to tell me." He mumbled slightly, not really knowing what Patton's reaction would have been. In the few weeks they've known each other he had always managed to keep his anxiety down, not showing how bad it actually was, so he had no idea what his friend's reaction would have been. What if he laughed in his face? What if he reevaluated him as a friend?
But none of this happened. Instead Patton immediately got this more serious look on his face, almost protective before asking Virgil if he could see his phone.
The darkly dressed guy was confused, but hesitantly did as he was asked, handing the unlocked device to his friend.
It took him a few moments to read the entire conversation, but by the time he got to the end, he was smiling slightly, which only served to confuse the anxious guy even more.
"Well, kiddo, they don't sound that bad, and it could be fun to try and guess who they are! Maybe you'll end up making a new friend!" Patton said cheerily, offering him an encouraging smile.
"But what if they're lying? What if they are not who they say they are? I am the one who doesn't know who they are not the other way around! What if this is all a prank to embarrass me?" He started to ramble, his anxiety making him spiral.
Before he could go into a full blown panic attack, though, his friends gently squeezed his shoulder, grounding him and making him look up.
"You don't have to tell them anything you're not comfortable with, the rules only said that you each have a question, not that you had to answer it. Plus, if you don't try you'll never know! Trust me kiddo, I'm sure you'll have fun!"
Virgil took a deep breath, nodding and trying to calm down.
"Thank you Pat. I'll think about it." He said turning back towards the TV as the other turned the show back on, knowing the conversation was over.
They spent the rest of the afternoon together until it was time to go home.
Virgil sighed, taking out his phone as the cold air nibbled at his fingers. He was almost home after walking for around thirty minutes, his hood pulled up to warm him against the cold night breeze. He still hadn't answered the message and if he had to be completely honest, he didn't really know what to answer.
He had never been someone who liked taking risks. He liked being in control of a situation and knowing how it would play out, or at least a number of scenarios that could come out of it. In this situation though, not only was he not in control, but he was also at a slight disadvantage with the whole thing of the other knowing who he is, but he having no idea who they were.
Then again, though, Patton's words echoed into his head: "It could be fun, you'll never know if you don't try!"
He shook his head smiling at the thought of his friend, before making a decision.
-I'm in.
