PROLOGUE
"No! Don't hurt me . . ." Jennifer cried as a huge force pushed her down. Hitting her back on the dirty school ground, she landed with a thud. Her back and head hurt.
Out of the blue, she felt a forced blow on her stomach. She yelped and curled into a ball, whimpering in pain.
"Please, STOP!" She screamed when she saw the vicious man's deep green eyes glistening, the only visible part of his face that wasn't covered by the mask.
He ignored Jennifer's protest and pulled back his foot for another kick. She felt everything frozen in its place. She closed her eyes tightly, welcoming the pain.
"Please . . ." she pleaded one last time with hope, the hope of living, the hope of one last luck, vanishing into thin air.
Jennifer had tried her best. She prayed, bit, kicked, screamed, punched, and did everything she could to break out from this wild creature's hold. But he was stronger, older, and ferocious.
"This is my end, my death. I had dreamt of death, and now, I'm truly living, no– dying it. Will anyone miss me? What would my siblings, friends, and family do? Will they forget me? Who will steal Joe's snacks again? Who will prank Jas and Nora? Will they replace me? Who will argue with mum and do the chores? Oh no, I haven't traveled around the world yet! What about my dreams and ambitions? Do they serve pizza in the grave? I'm craving for some ice cream and chocolate . . . And my dear sister . . . I . . . I don't wanna die!"
Jenny mumbled to herself as she tried to stand, tears rolling down her pale face. The man's hand was on her neck now, all thoughts running through her mind. He tightened the clasp on her neck, preventing her from breathing. She struggled for air, her face going pale and eyes reddening.
"Jenny! Jenny, dear! Where are you? Jenny!!" Joe. It was from Joe. Jennifer felt a ray of hope forging inside her. The abuser was taken aback. He wasn't expecting a company. Even though Jenny was in pain, she stood and cried out with all her might,
"Joe! I'm . . . here! Behind the . . . s . . . school!" The man held Jennifer's hand. He took something out of his pocket. Something that was least expecting, a pen? Why would he take a pen to kill someone?
"Jenny!!" Joe sped up to Jenny as he saw her being held by a man who looked about thirty, judging by his height and weight. Beads of sweat rolled down his forehead with anger and fear raising inside. He felt dizzy as he saw the man holding a knife–a knife that came along with a pen.
Jenny's eyes widened at the sight of the sharp and shining knife, that somehow appeared from below the pen. She felt as if the world was rotating too fast, and her throat was parched, preventing her from uttering any words. She didn't know what bad deed she had done that led someone to kill her. She wasn't someone who hurt others, she was the one who loved others, expecting nothing back.
Jenny was weird in a unique way, she was smart and sarcastic. Though she hid tears behind her smile, though she was insecure, though she was judged, she wasn't evil.
"Leave her! Now!" Joe screamed as he shoved the man. The anonymous murderer loosened his hold on Jenny's hand. Joe, a masculine boy of eighteen, punched the man in the face with all his might.
"Jenny! Leave! Go fast!!" Joe cried out as he kicked and punched the anonymous killer. The murderer was no stupid either, he blocked most of the punches that came in his way and punched back. Jenny wouldn't move, panicking – from the pain and the fight. She wanted to help Joe, but she was too fragile to even move.
"Jennifer! Run!" He called her Jennifer and not Jenny, indicating how furious and serious he was.
"But . . . I . . . can't. You are alone . . . He might ki– harm . . . you . . ." Jenny mumbled shakily, stuttering each word. She couldn't leave him with a monster. That monster was trying to kill her, she was so near to death, if she left Joe with him, he would kill him.
"I must do something!" Then, she saw Joe's phone on the ground. She never thought twice, even though she was in pain, she crawled over and took the phone. Joe and the monster were too distracted to even notice.
Taking a deep breath and wiping the tears, Jenny dialed the numbers, "Hello, police . . . station? I'm Jennifer George. Oh, yes. There's a . . ." she gave them the address and other details, being unaware of her surroundings for a moment. It took a moment for her to realize that the atmosphere was noiseless. Just as she turned around did she saw the knife in the killer's hand, with the mask still covering his face, moving towards Joe, who was on the ground with bruises and blood covering his body.
"Jen . . . go . . . leave . . . I will be . . . fine . . ." Joe whispered, the knife was only an inch far from his neck, yet he asked Jenny to save herself.
"Don't, don't kill him. Please . . . If you want to kill someone that badly, kill me," Jenny said, walking to them. The anonymous hadn't said a word this whole time. Was he mute?
"Jenny, don't be stupid. Leave me and go!"
Jenny sobbed as she said, "Shut up, Joe. How can I leave you? You are the only one who understands me. No one loves me as much as you do. I can't just leave you! You came to save me and how can I leave you with a monster?!"
The man had his left hand with the knife on Joe's neck, Jenny was held by his right hand. He tightened the grip on her hand, but she couldn't care less!
"One more step and he's dead." The anonymous man whispered, loud enough to give chills. The police jeep sirens were nearing them.
"Any last words? These kids are dumb! Haha haha!" The demon laughed, his eyes glowing intensely with a wicked desire, as he slit Joe's neck swiftly as if it was a piece of cake, only that it wasn't, after Joe's last words,
"I might not be there to protect you next time, so don't let these creeps get you, and make sure there is no next time. I love you and Happy birthday, my weird tomboy,"
That was the day Jennifer lost her beloved brother, Joe, forever . . .
