Escape
The moon gleams high up in the sky, signalling midnight. Mitch, Vincent and I are roaming the streets, laughing and enjoying the freedom of the darkness. A couple of dares are thrown around. From the quick and fun, saying 'Hi' to a random person walking by, to the down right dangerous. Which is where we are right now. Together, we clumped our dares together. Creating what would be, to us anyways, the most dangerous dare, we could ever come up with.
Vincent was steal a random object from somewhere. Mitch was turn the lights on the third floor of an apartment. Mine was just do something and don't get caught. Creating the dare, 'Break into the third floor of an apartment, turn on lights that would be visible to those below and finally steal an object from one of the rooms. All without getting caught.
The dare was too wild, why did we decide to clump them together. The guys, being gentlemen, let me off because I was a innocent follower, they 'kidnapped' at sunset. They knew me as the quiet yet sassy one.
What it really was, was me accidentally saying things saying things out loud. Like those moments where you think "She looks so fat in that dress" and you don't realise that you were actually mumbling it. Then the person you were talking about hears you or like one of those people who are really loud hear you. Then they just shout out "OH YOU JUST GOT ROASTED!". Continuing from there mayhem just pursues.
I didn't want to do anything bad. Which is why all my dares were weak. Like 'pet that dog' or 'kiss each other'. They realised their mistake by the second dare I said. They then took it upon themselves to look after me, since we had already walked so far and taking me home would be mean and rude. They did forget every now and again.
This is why I'm here now. We stood opposite the chosen apartment. We weren't in the nicest area of the city, I wanted out, fast. The guys couldn't care less though, they continued arguing. We had walked a pretty far distance. We live in the suburbs, right now we were practically next to the city. Standing opposite of a apartment, next to a empty plot of dust, with a pair of stupid arguing idiots.
"You go, man" Mitch began.
"Hell no, you go." Vincent whisper-shouts, "You wanted this, you do it"
Mitch, falling short of a reply, looks at the sky. Annoyed that he thought of clumping the dares and breaking into a place.
Mitch walks across the street and opens the door to the apartment. A light on the third floor lights up a couple of minutes later lighting . up the whole floor. A scream can be heard and we see Mitch running out of the building. We run, as a group, in a panic down, the street and into a long alleyway. Mitch says to us is short sentences, "I didn't even make it up the stairs! I was up the first flight of stairs when I heard screaming and booked it" Mitch quickly whisper-shout to us, "Guys, we need to spilt! Someone might be following."
I maybe the quiet one but I am still smart. I am not getting caught and I sure as hell ain't gonna get Mitch and Vincent caught. Though they don't know me that well and we aren't even really friends, I look after everyone I meet. Even if it's just a tiny change.
Mitch and Vincent split in two directions into sub alleys, while I continue to run forwards. I crash into a stranger. I quickly turn and run along the footpath trying to escape the embarrassment and the unknown danger. A couple of buildings and light patches later, I spot two guys are walking on the foot path ahead. On the left, a fairly tall, European guy. Doesn't seem much older than 20 years old. On the right, a slightly shorter 'African-American'. Probably about the same age, it's hard to tell from looking at their back in the limited light.
I slow down and walk along side to the one on the right. I face the person on my left. It's old friend, Matt. It's a small world, huh? Even after all these years, his face shows he recognises me almost immediately. "Let me just walk along side with you, Matt." I say to him, looking down at the ground. I had no idea what I was saying. At this point, I would have still been running home but instead I'm some where in the city and my family don't even know where I am.
I see him look at me with wide eyes from my peripheral vision. "But..." I quickly cut him off. "Just let me walk along side with you Matt, please." I throw my hood on. He just nods and pulls my hood further over my head, hiding the longer pieces of hair. The guy on the left of Matt just switches to walking on my right. No questions asked. It looks a little strange. Two tall guys walking with a person a considerable amount shorter than them, who also happens to have their hood up.
Sirens and other city sounds are heard. Something stands out though. The sounds of heavy footsteps, becoming louder. It slows to the left-side the three of us. Next to Matt. I freeze for a second. I take a long slow breath in, I've been caught. This was just meant to be a fun trip with the guys. We were only meant to travel a couple of blocks for one or two hours. The sun's rising and I'm somewhere in the city with people I barely know. I don't even know if the others are safe.
The footsteps follow along side Matt, opposite of me. "Hey, you guys ready?" A young yet deep voice says to us. The voice pauses, "Wait, who's this?" The voice says, most likely referring to me Matt quickly answer for me. "This is Lucas." The guy just continues to walk along side us. What seems like seconds, hours pass. We come across a barbed fence. Matt looks to me, "You don't have to do this." I raise my head a little to look at him and back at the fence. I take a few steps back and run at the gate.
What are you doing?
Get off the fence!
You are totally TRESPASSING!
You damn well to stop.
I jump up the gate, clearing about half, and climb over, cutting my face a little on the wire as I lift myself over. Hanging off the top of it, past the barbed wire and holding onto the fence itself, I can see the surprise looming on their faces. Most likely because my hood came off. Showing off my feminine like features .They look to Matt then back at me. They shrug and quickly move to jump the fence. I see a factory and a line of expensive cars outside.
With such little security it's almost like they are asking to be robbed.
These cars are so far in the open too.
For whatever reason, I immediately go to a holo-green Audi R8. The guys follow behind. I test the doors, nothing. I try again, a little more violently. Something is making me change wildly. Last time, I checked I was a quiet loner. I don't pull at doors of random cars.
The car makes a beep sound. I panic and look around to see if anyone heard. I see a silhouette of a person leave the warehouse. They seem to pose little threat. No stance to show they are holding a blade or a gun. A cloud moves away from the rising sun revealing the person in more clear detail.
I don't know who he is but the tag on his clothes says 'Bach'. He smiles at the guys, then walking to me and the car. He doesn't loom above me as much as the others. His height compared to mine, still shakes the fear in me. He reaches towards me. He lightly moves me out of the way and unlocks the car.
Unlocking the car. One of the guys open the door and I quickly jump into the back. I get in and see one of the guys outside in front of the car. It was the guy that was walking with Matt. When I walking with him earlier. "Sorry guys, but this is where we split." He says. "What why, Curtis?" I hear one of the guys say. "Because, the roads will be filled with traffic. People are coming and leaving for work. I'm taking the boat." Curtis says.
"Dude, get in the car. It's fine we're in a fast car." I hear one of the guys say. I quickly cut them off. "He is kinda right. I still think we should take the car though. Instead of all of us in one car how about we take multiple? So if one car goes down we just call the others to quickly pick us up?" The guys all look at each other. They all nod in sync. They exit the car and walk to the factory to collect the keys and find other cars.
What is with me?
They are stealing a car!
I don't even know what's going on.
I should be home.
Who are these people any way?
I follow the guys in. Common sense hits me in the face. Problems rush through my mind. I don't know if Vincent or Mitch are safe. I'm walking into a warehouse which was surrounded by a barbed fence, which mean it was probably private property. I don't know why we are here. Why are they trying to take cars? I only know one of the guys here. The others might be keeping Matt here by force.
What's going on here?
This is crazy.
As I followed the guys through the factory I notice it's a car show area. Then I see it. The car I grew up with when I was younger. A Toyota Landcruiser. The 2000 edition. All the problems flow out of my mind. Something was blocking my anxiety. The only thought in my mind is I want it. It has been years since I saw it. I stop Curtis, who was the closest to me, by clinging to his shirt. He stops talking and looks at where I was pointing. A slight frown appears. "You want that one?" I can hear the hesitation in his voice.
"It's good for when we get out of the city and it's good for all terrain." I quietly say. He looks me straight in the eye and releases a sigh. "Hey guys, I'm going with her in the Toyota. The guys just nod and continue. I stand and smile at Curtis. "Don't give me that. I only wanted to go with this car because it has many uses." He looks away with a look of slight annoyance. I run to the car and start the car. Who thought it's a good idea to leave the keys here? Bit cliché isn't it?
I feel a hand lift me up, picking me off the seat. "Hell no, sunshine. You can't even drive." I hear Curtis say. He picks me up and puts me in the back seat. "Here just fold the back seats and chuck them on the roof or something, alright? Then you can sit at the front with me." He said in a slightly demanding tone. I give a annoyed mumble and set to work. "While you do that I'm going to get supplies and talk to the guys about the communications. If anyone comes, lie down flat and hide or something, alright?" Curtis says to me. I mumble a annoyed yes and continue working on the seats.
Wait, what am I doing?
Why am I helping to steal these?
Who are these people?
Who cares you have a chance to escape, LET'S GO!
I hear Curtis' footsteps slowly echo away. A short while after fiddling with the straps I got it loose. I carefully fold the seats up. It lands with a quiet bang. I thought it was okay, till I heard it echo back. It was loud. I hear a animated chatter. It's doesn't sound like the guys it's close but muffled. I quickly and quietly shut the door and climb onto the roof and hid. I watch a light shine past the car. I release my breath as I see it's just the guys with bandanas on. I slide down onto the hood of the car hanging my legs over the front.
"Good to see you were listening to me." Curtis says as he lightly ruffles my hair. "Hey, Matt what's her real name?" I hear the the young voice say. "Adeline, my name is Adeline." I answer his question. "I shouldn't need to be a messenger, Curtis." I say. "The question I should be asking is what is everyone's names? I've been put in the dark. I barely know anyone's name and WHAT'S GOING ON?"
"Well, I'm Matt. Clearly you still remember me, so I don't need to say much else."
"I'm Curtis. You seemed to remember that."
The 'young yet deep' voice simply says "I'm Jack. I'm a bit heart broken you don't remember me. We were best friends in high school. You'd never leave me alone." I laugh and chuck the keys from the car at him. Just like high school he was ready for it
The 'warehouse silhouette' then finally finishes everything. "I'm Bach, as you can see from the tag and what's going on is a gang war is about to start. According to unknown sources."
I stare at the four of them. I take a breath in and begin slowly, "Do you have any idea how bad than sounds? 'Oh, we heard from a unknown source a gang war is about to start so we are stealing stuff even though it's not confirmed." As I was lecturing them. Jack had slipped away and was fiddling with the radio.
The sound of the radio turning on causes me to turn and look at Jack. "We interrupt all broadcasts for this announcement, this is not a drill. In a orderly fashion please evacuate the city. A gang has begun an is slowly demolishing and killing thousands though the city. Please evacuate towards the east side of city. Gangs are approaching from the west side of the " The radio blares out, only to be cut off by a smug looking Jack. "Okay then, I take back my words, what's the plan?"
The guys then pull out a map and show me what they had planned. We were going to go guns-a-blazing, near end of the evacuation. To avoid getting bad quality items and avoid too much trouble, we were still going to raid the stores at the start. Just a little more peacefully, no rush after all. They pointed out all the places they were planning. Once we were up to date on the plans, we worked out who was going with who.
