// How It All Started

I was exhausted, but still excited. It was my birthday, June eighth, to be exact, and it felt good to be twelve. My mother could feel it in my hand, the excitement, and she gave me a funny look. We were waiting in line for the best ice cream in Karkrhum, Fantasy Freeze.

Finally it was our turn to get a serving of rocky road, but it seemed to be taking a while; the man behind the counter had his eyes glued to the television that hung up in the corner of the wall. My mother tapped her fingers on the table impatiently, but then glanced towards the tv.

Breaking news! Citizens of Karkrhum, it is advised that everyone get to their homes as soon as possible. A deadly virus has been brought to our attention, and it is escaping from the private walls of Karkrhum's very own private emergency health facility. It could reach anyone, and is spreading its host into any body it can find.

I had heard about this. I found it interesting; the oldest residents of Karkrhum started to have symptoms, such as their skin falling off or molding around their bodies. There eye sockets falling out, their legs slowly crippling. It was fascinating, but it soon started to reach not only elders, but people of all ages. I remember a girl in my literature class had the same problem and was taken out of school immediately.

I watched the tv intently, but my mother, and many others, started to scream. She grasped my shoulders and pushed me out of the parlor. I almost suffocated, but eventually everyone escaped the door and ran up and down the streets, trying to find their houses in the dark.

"Ethan," My mother said urgently, holding back tears as she gripped my hand and ran. "I want you to run for me as fast as you can. Don't look back."
I nod, a grin growing on my face. It was just like P.E. class, when we got to race each other around the track. But she wasn't smiling like I thought she would.

I started to feel my legs burn as I let go of her grasp, bounding home, letting the crisp breeze blow past me. I didn't look back, like she told me, until I heard her scream.

Her eyes were wide open, paralyzed, as a hunched over figure with white-green skin and huge wounds bit into her shoulder. She continued to whale, her last words ringing in my ear.

"Ethan, you have to keep running. Never stop runni--"

And I watched her fall limp, lying on the sidewalk, as the stalky shadow bounded up from her body. I felt their presence look through my eyes and into my soul, almost pushing me to the ground. It laughed manically and staggered quickly away to its next victim.

Never stop. Never stop running.

TBH I never thought I was going to publish this book. It's just been racing through my mind lately so I thought I would let it be out here in the Wattpad world. PLEASE, leave me a comment and let me know what you think!! Should I continue this? Don't worry, this is only a rough draft.
Xx Katy
